Love your videos. Keep up the great work. One question is can you create a playlist where the viewer flys with you. I am no pilot (maybe one day) and just fly xplane as a hobby. I would like to see videos where you pick starting point and destination and go through all the steps so as a viewer i can setup my xplane the same and do the same flight. It would be a nice learning tutorial.

The best for you in 2018!!!Good videos, no irritating camera movements , distracting or too loud music and very good and clear information.That's what a good video has to look like....I've started flight simming early in the 80's but subscribed anyhow... Keep it up!Best regards and wishes from Belgium! - Marc

The best for you as well, nostromo405! Thank you for the kind words. Flight sim has come a long way since then, huh? My first was Chuck Yeager’s Advanced Flight Trainer in the early 90s. Sending good thoughts to Belgium!

I'm learning so much from watching all your videos! They are super clear, very detailed and informative. Like having a personal instructor. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to do these.

Did the Chair Flying link get de-coupled?? A few other links in older KZbin videos don't go anywhere either. Like the xChecklist file. Maybe a few others too.

Nice video as always, however there is another aspect that I really want to know when talk about landing that is trim setting. How should we set the trim when doing a landing? Thanks in advance
@clayviation6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Andi! Without getting too specific, you want to try to have any control pressures trimmed off for any phase of flight, including landing. When you establish a new airspeed and flap configuration on approach, trim off any control pressures needed to keep the airplane where you like it.

Clay, First of all, thank you for all your videos. Only discovered my interest in aviation very recently and I have to say your videos have been the most interesting/helpful. I especially like your information about general aviation in real life and the comparisons with the sim. I would very much appreciate your thoughts about the following if you don't mind: In your opinion, is there a big difference between the stock Cessna (+REP) and the Airfoillabs, and if so, is it worth the extra money? I am looking into buying a new plane (GA) but I'm not sure if I want to keep flying the Cessna or maybe try something new, do you have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Hi Kevin! I’m glad the aviation bug has bitten you - it’s a great world to explore. I personally feel that the money spent on the Airfoillabs Cessna 172 was a no brainer. While there is nothing wrong with the default 172, the Airfoillabs adds some features that have made it my new default model. There are a lot of great add-on airplanes to be had at X-Plane.org and the price tag that comes with them for what you get is usually more than fair. I like to fly the C172 because it’s what I fly in real life and it’s a very common trainer for new pilots. If you get into something else, I’d encourage you to stay basic for a while with a trainer type airplane. It doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with a more complicated airplane, but if you are interested in making it the most realistic, you can learn to do it right in a trainer before moving up. Thanks for flying along!

Thank you for another great video! I'm also using the airfoillabs C172 but I find it quite difficult to make small adjustments when flying, which makes landing nicely pretty hard. I'm using the saitek yoke with the recommended sensitivity settings. May I ask you which yoke/controller you use and with which settings?
@clayviation7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, ddv2511! I use the CH Eclipse Yoke and CH Pro rudder pedals and I fly with default sensitivity settings. I used to have the Saitek Yoke, and while I enjoyed it, I seem to remember it springing to center fairly strongly. The CH doesn’t do that as much, although in either case, the use of elevator trim is extremely important. Do you have any buttons set up to adjust your trim? I’m covering that topic in the next episode if you are less than familiar with it. Thanks for flying along!

clayviation, I do have a button setup for the elevator trim, but I normally only use it after take off and when levelling off for cruise. Is it common to use the trim a lot when on approach? I cannot wait for your next video. I am learning new things with every one of them so keep up the great work!

I’m so glad you are enjoying them! Yes, I use trim every time there is a change in configuration (airspeed or attitude). So in this video on the approach, I pulled power to 1700, added a notch of flaps, and then trimmed the control pressures away. Then each time I added flaps, I trimmed the control pressures away. The idea is to be able to fly “hands off” and stay in the same pitch. This way you can just make small corrections to your pitch to keep it like you want it. Without trim on approach, I’d be pushing over on the yoke a lot and if I let go even a little I’d be all over the place. I’ll dig deeper into it in the next video. Thanks again for flying along!

I would suggest using something like the Thrustmaster t-16000m joystick in place of the saitek yoke or any yoke for that matter that is less than $800 or $900. The joystick is very sensitive and even though it is not a yoke, it is much easier to adjust to those micro levels that is needed for flying the airfoillabs 172 or any plane for that matter. This recommended joystick costs less than $80.

Are you using the 1.3 or 1.4 version of the 172? I hear the 1.4 physics are a bit off.
@clayviation6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I’ll have to look and see which one I’m on. Either way, I’m always more interested in the chair flying aspect of using the sim rather than the physics, but that’s a great thing to ponder. Thanks for watching!
@johnhuber45056 жыл бұрын
Well I'm a student pilot and struggling with rudder control on stalls so I'm on the quest for something to help me practice that (in between $200 lessons). So I don't know if my failures in the sim are me or the physics. That's why I was asking.
@clayviation6 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see. I wouldn’t put too much value on practicing things like stalls in the sim other than the ability to learn the motions. For example, if you spend some time going through “carb heat on, power to idle, hold the nose level, flaps 10 at this speed, flaps 20 at this speed, full flaps, hold the nose back, etc etc” you will be very equipped mentally to practice the physical component when you are in the real airplane. In my opinion, that kind of chair flying is the best use of your time in the sim. Most of all, have some fun with it!
