Buckethead is Buckethead. He shreds with actual moments of feeling. I think of him as a sarcastic presentation of tech/speed/perfection and a Spinal Tap humor tied together by teasing intermittent beautiful soulful melodies to show he’s human. He’s a tireless song writer and you could listen to a different new song everyday and it would take you years to hear every one, he must have thousands of songs as I think he’s put out hundreds of independent albums. Not sure of the numbers but I’m sure someone can fill in the facts. Does what he wants and creates what he wants, can’t put a square peg in a round commercially oriented hole 🤦‍♂️ or something like that

He is a complete one-off - uniquely brilliant and endlessly creative - good luck trying to pin him down - I just checked on Wikipedia and he has 435 studio albums and 388 live albums to date.

I think he plays anything he wants? What I love is : although is a real pro he doesn't shy from improvs and errors are not a biggy because, I think, he's all about fun. IMO the bucket on his head is to remind everyone not to take everything so seriously. Anyway hearing him is always such a blast.

The pulsing/skipping sound you like is Buckethead tapping the kill switch on the body of guitar. The two red buttons on his guitar are custom installed and they interrupt the signal from the pickups. So he plays notes by hammering the strings against the frets with his left hand and interrupts the signal with his right hand. He also uses a "wah" pedal at the same time to get a little bit of a crying sound.

Buckethead is one of the most prolific guitarists ever, both as a solo artist and with many bands. So there's something from him for everyone and so much to choose from. My personal favourite is For Mom, a track he recorded when his mother was being treated for colon cancer. It's a beautiful statement of his feelings and probably the best present I can imagine anyone could give to one of their parents when they are going through something like that.

I would put Buckethead in the category of Frank Zappa, Primus, Tom Waits etc... In that he's unique. At this point he's solo albums alone stands at the total of 600+ and in there you can find everything from the most experimental weird stuff to the most calm and meditative. He even invented a new guitar technique that sounds like some malfunctioning computer sounds and he's such a kind soul handing out gifts to the fans during the shows.

JP getting down with the bucket! Today is a good day. Aunt Suzie is similar to this one; personally I like it moreso than Soothsayer. If you are looking for something completely different try the track Escape From Inbred Mountain.

What a treat JP! BH is at a different level and his creativity knows no bounds. He essentially stopped touring since covid and his own illnesses. My son (an accomplished guitarist himself) and I have made a pact to go see him perform - where ever... On my Bucket list! I like this version musically, but the video editing and distractions suck. Most of his performances over the 15 years are solo with backing tracks. The red buttons are "kill switches" which simply turn off the output. He has clearly mastered this! I highly recommend Jordan performed at The Culture Room. Amazing showcase of the kill switches and tapping skills! He is a very tall guy and big basketball fan. Jordan is dedicated to Michael Jordan, and also the first BH tune I heard as it was on my sons Guitar Hero (most difficult level) many years ago...

"Nottingham Lace" is one of my favorites. A bit heavier, faster with some killer riffs. "Jordan" is good too and probably his most famous track due to its inclusion in Guitar Hero 2. If you're wanting more live stuff of his, track down any concert footage from Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. Buckethead, Les Claypool, Bernie Worrell and Brain Mantia coming together to make some incredible impromptu jams

I think the effect you were referring to was just him breaking up his very fast runs to play in a couple of places a series of pitches picked twice on each note - on your video starting at 6:49 and 8:28. These passages are slower, so it's easier to hear the effect of the chorus pedal he seems to be using on each of these longer notes. At 9:09, where you mentioned it, he did the same, picking each note 3 times, and you can hear him using the wah wah pedal more on that passage.

The ultimate shred-meister. No one quite does it like the bucket. Unbelievable mastery of his narrow skills niche. And this setup is quite an enjoyable soulful groove. But the bizarre bucket and mask? I guess he was sure to get noticed - but wouldn't you think the playing alone is enough to get him noticed as a cut above in any crowd? And though I'm astonished any time I watch him, it's all pretty much like that, which musically bores me after a while. But then, you've got to admit it's true, he brings shredding to a whole new level, and really deserves a place in guitar god history for that.

There are plenty of far better shred players than Buckethead. Satch, for example, makes him sound like a cardboard cutout.

As far as the dancers go, my guess he was at someone else's festival, and some of the people involved wanted to dance for him. I like it. Two pieces of art within a single time slot. It's kinda like the ballet. (I don't think he has a Marketing Division behind him that fakes this kind of thing up; I think it's more likely to be something pretty organic - and probably a one-off, even.) As far as the bucket and mask goes, I think that's there to be free for interpretation. The impression I got when he wasn't yet more widely accepted was that it was something like a workaround for an introvert who needed to do something extrovert to achieve his aims. (So the music had to be resonating in some resonant audience, but getting up in front of people is hell, so how do you manage that? Just plinging away in your own room is not an option in this scenario.) I think it at least started as something that gave him the anonymity he personally needed, and protected him from people he might feel were staring, and needed to be run away from as urgently as can be. As far as the music goes, a lot of it is not pop that the listener needs to get right away, and know how to react to. Well all of it, I think. Part of the bucket headed persona (and where it's an accurate reflection, an persona is something like a "statement" - to put a word bled white to this) is that he doesn't care what your critical opinion is. He wants to be appreciated (otherwise why stand, and he wants his music to be loved, but what he looks like (etc etc etc) doesn't matter. As you can see from the comments of those who know him better, there's a huge range of songs by him. Some have lots of nice, cool abstraction; some have bleeding hearts. He does it all.

He's doing that choppy sound with something called a 'kill-switch', that simply mutes the signal. I think he has that on all of his guitars in one way or the other.

First time I have heard Buckethead. The piece was alright. His guitar is ok. I have no criticism of his ability. I did spend a lot of time thinking about how awful that bucket, long hair, and facial mask must feel on a warm day.

See all that four note per string shred stuff? I can actually do the same stuff, so I can judge the playing on technical merit alone. The thing is that Buckethead is pretty often just mindless with his shredding, and this is a good example of that: not many melodic ideas, simple and predictable chords, and not much is memorable when it's done.

Any one minute slice out of the track might have been ok, but overall it stopped being interesting long before it got to the end. It had some Hendrixy bits, it had some shreddy bits, but none of it came across to me as being played with any real passion. I will admit that bland instrumental guitar music is really not my thing, so I'm definitely not the target audience for this.

Standard response from someone who never listened to any of his work besides Jordan or Soothsayer. Go listen to "watching the boats with my dad", "I love my parents" or this live version of Ms.Beasly kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5-9pGZ4oKxlbc0. Such a shame most people think that he just is a mindless shredder while he has put out some of the most emotional tracks i`ve ever heard.

Meh... left me a bit cold. To start, I thought the underlying melody was rather weak. Then It was just topped by unrelenting noodling, and after a while I just started to lose interest. He might as well have just been practising scales. But the worst for me was the seemingly total lack of emotion, it was all too mechanical. I heard about as much emotion in his playing as I saw on his face...
