I live in an urban area not too far away from a big urban city with a bigger national airport next to it and an even bigger international seaport next to that; you get the point. A buddy of mine had me over a few weeks ago for a couple of sat night little parties he was havin on an off. After using up all the big bix store 2x6s and 4x4s for the mini bonfires he had, I noticed a couple of ~18" wide logs of Willow tree I think, I dont know really. I grabbed a carpenters hammer and an electricians chizel from his garage and went ham on that sucker most of the night while everyone was going bottoms up on the drinks. Man, I felt good the next day.

Same here. The exercise makes my shoulder and back pain almost go away too. I would argue that log splitters have their place, but 95% of the time, I much prefer swinging an axe after running my 44+ year old chainsaw.

I split eucalyptus. It's hard and un forgiving. And when I started several years ago, I thought about a log splitter. I'd definitely need one 32 tons plus. A used one cost about $700. A rented one just didn't make sense. Gas, maintenance, lugging and lifting the rounds into the machine. The math didn't add up. I vowed to split by hand ever since. My friends think I'm crazy and they don't come around much anymore. Thank you Buckin Army for being my family.

I find you aim incredible precise . We live in the foothills and a tent peg is driven in the ground with a 4lbs hammer be course of the rocky ground and am amazed that you dont loose the edge after the axe hits the ground and still cut the mushroom Holy Moly😳😳. It takes me a long time to sharpen a axe and shiver at the thought it hitting the ground I used to have a permanent shopping block in my truck. I am now chair bound and thoroughly enjoy your vids Thank you Martin

Log splits are also for disabled bikers that can't swing an axe no more... I swung an axe from the age of ten until the motorcycle wreck that end a big part of my life at 53 years of age... Some friend I don't know who sent me a 21 ton log splitter. It was the best gift I ever received. We couldn't find anyone to come split the wood we need for to winter, so we ended up getting old skids to cut up to burn. When all the while we had at least 5 cords of wood that just needed someone to split it... So I now hook the splitter up to my lawn tractor and pull it out the the side field where there's a big pile of wood that my tree trimmer biker buddy brings me. This year he's been VERY busy this is the biggest mound of wood he ever brought me. And he cuts it all to 16inches just to make my life easier... I split what I can then some friends come lift the logs I can't lift.... Be blessed my friend.... BBE...

Some people pay good money for gym memberships. They spend time traveling back and forth and working out at the gym, and what they get for it is, maybe, some health benefit. BR Spends some time busting firewood, gets his workout at no cost and with a product at the end. Since I retired, I tell people "I don't need a gym membership. I'm a homesteader." I swing axes, shovel dirt, move timber - I do physical work that has a product as well ;) And while I've spent much of my life being a competitive athlete, I'm in the best shape of my life now at 63.

Hi Billy I usually cut up blue gum for fire wood and some is knotty af, I used to use a maul as a wedge knocked in with another 8lb maul but laziness been my guiding principle that was to 🐌 slow. So I worked on a new technique, the straight arm helicopter with a maul. What I do is with a straight arm only using one hand always swing the axe 🪓 back and fourth a few times until it's swinging to about shoulder height then with a straight Arm swing behind and over my head and down in a single movement and with only one arm. The maul is really flying at this point and when it connects to wood knot or whatever It won't bounce because so much momentum, the wood flies apart... literally can send parts 30ft. I have not found any log to present a problem now ;-). I love watching your vids, years back you motivated me to do get some old saws and deal to the 50m tall gums 👍👍 Thanks buddy and please stock up for the depression we are entering. Food and fuel and everything is about to become scarce so get what you might need in the next 7 years now. Seeds, ammo, silver also useful to barter and don't forget food presiving equipment and extra boots 😉.

@@munched55 I too have hand made axe shafts out of Yellow Birch and I find them good on my Billnas Axes. I was born in England and came to Canada when I was 51, most of the axes my dad and grandad had were shafted with Ash, occasionally with Oak and on one or two very old axes Elm (which I find to be an amazing wood). In Russian and parts of Eastern Europe Beech is used and is a good choice. Hickory is tough, but I have had many axe shafts split down the grain. My grandfather's axe was a 4 1/2lb Elwell dated 1944 with a 'crows foot' stamp on the head indicating it was military issue. I also have a very ld Pattern 44 Elwell 2 1/2lb felling axe with a rounded poll. The biggest Elwell Axe I have seen was 8lbs!

Sunday morning, waking up with a coffee and watching this video while rain is pouring outside. This is a perfect moment, thanks for these video's. I'm not an axe man like you. I mean... I have only one, I like it and it get's the job done. A woodstove get's you warm at least 3 times: 1) cutting the tree and bringin' the logs home, 2) splitting the wood and 3) burning it and enjoy the warmth. So I do use an axe to split the wood. It get's me tired physically, but gives so much energy mentally. There's not a woodsplitter in the world that brings me the same feeling.

I love splitting wood with my axe but I split about 15-20 cords a year and it is mostly nasty oak, maple, locust and cherry etc so I use my logsplitter a lot I have not touched my maul but 2 or 3 times in 5 years

@@henryholliday1 I got the old splitting wedges and the 8 pound sledge out the other day. I have some big nasty oak to bust up enough to lift them on the splitter. The splitter stands up. I don't like using it that way. I would toss the wedge into a crack and give it a wack. 3 swings and the wedge would bounce out. Lol. Ugh. I finally scooted them big ones close to the splitter with the tractor and stood the splitter up. I went to the woods last night. Got up this morning, fixed breakfast and cut some old oak up. Loaded 15 logs up and went home. One smack with an axe and they just pop apart. Almost silly to use the splitter. This other oak,, it's silly to not use the splitter.

I’m the same way with the box elders, I’ve tried splitting with an axe... forget it. Most consider “junk trees” but they plentiful around here and good enough for backyard fire wood.

So I chopped wood on my own and bought a maul and just went to town with no clue that there was a technique to it. Didn't look for cracks, didn't avoid knots and didn't go from the outside in. Took me countless swings to split a log and after watching this i see where i went wrong every time. I appreciate how informative this video is and wish I had watched it prior. Love you man

Hey Buckin just my two cents on the log splitter I’m in northwest lower Michigan the fire wood I get is mostly maple tree tops left over from the loggers not much straight grain lots of crotches. Also when I tell people I burn pine they all say ” oo you are going to get creosote your house will burn down” I use both and burn it all hot no smoke. Love the videos keep them coming Vince

Right. Try to burn it slow, that's when the creosote builds up....hardwoods better at night, but pines are good for heating up.

A lot of people are commenting on the spot on accuracy and I agree! Also, I´m very impressed by the deliberate and fast accelleration through the swing. Accuracy and proper accelleration to generate power. Great stuff! Death to logs!
