I Bucked and trimmed Cedar salvage for years earning a good a living. I use the Oregon filing gauge which keeps the file up in the proper position.. The tooth face needs a chisel edge not a knife edge or it will become dull quick. When you work piece meal you aren't making money when filing your saw. All the specs for the proper tooth angles are right on the box the chain comes in. Depending on what you are cutting you can get more aggressive on your angle like when cutting soft wood like red cedar.

Hi Ocean Bird ...what were you bucking ? 24” Shake blocks for fly outs ? I did quite a bit of that myself ..I still work with cedar when I can find it...I like doing 18” inch blocks for hand splits which I do myself ...Also make cedar fence rails ...all salvage ..love working with red cedar .. ..I look for ways to do things easier ..and Buckin is great for learning things from ..Never too old for learning..cheers

Maple usually splits very easily- unless you get an ugly knotty piece, or a tough stump. (or one of those yard trees that grew in a spiral...) I like that, Ash, and Beech the best for hand splitting. Apple, pear and hawthorne? Not so much. And then there's the odd piece of honey locust that laughs at you, and flips you off. "not today, suckah!!!"

I like the talk about saving your handle out. I really value lumber. Without the stick the axe head can't do a thing. That tree might have grown for 100-300 years for your axe, you better take care of it. Otherwise you're not respecting your tools. If it's nothing special sure beat it up. I process and dry my lumber by hand now. It's hard not to appreciate it and take care of it when you have to wait months to years for it to dry! Back in the day when the axe was king you didn't just lend your axe to a friend. If you carved that handle yourself it's precious and you didn't want anybody to ruin it.

Billy, You have spent an occupational lifetime honing your sharpening skills AND you have the Simington 451C .. you are a God at this. So someone watching your videos ..then complains their chains won't stay sharp ? wt $% .. They have to spend their time at the vice ... hours and hours ..they can't blame you for that. Do your homework guys. Billys given you the demo, go practice. And get access to a Simington or Oregon sharpener. There's the story to become an expert you have to do 10,000 hours ... To become an expert helicopter pilot, Piano player, intensive care nurse, builder. ... you also have to have some talent. It doesn't mean you're an idiot at 100 hours .. but by 500 hours better .. 1000 hours you're in the groove. Don't rush it spend some time with the saw in the vice ..make some extra spare chains .. so if you blunt 1 you just change out.
