@@dme1016 Of course they incorporated aspects of the Kennedy assassination especially with the assassination of the original assassin himself, but this skit was prompted by Reagan's assassination attempt which had just recently occurred, especially the footage they played of the rapid gunfire as agents pushed Reagan back into the car. Furthermore it was a commentary on how all the recent assassinations & attempts (including the recent John Lennon assassination) focused on the assassin to the point of almost glorifying them, part of the problem as they explained in the "news" section of this comedy piece -- and then they proceeded to just that in the skit.

@LazyIRanch5 жыл бұрын
They could never do something like this now, unfortunately. Too many overly-sensitive folks with no sense of humor now who bitch about EVERYTHING. I was a high school student in the 70's, and racism wasn't nearly as rampant as it is now (at least where I lived). I really think it has much to do with the fact that we were discussing racism more openly, and Norman Lear had a positive influence on that. The most popular sitcoms in that era were created by him, and they were very edgy. He wrote scripts that shone a spotlight on bigots, and the language they used. "Sanford and Son" was a great show, and wildly popular with people of all ethnicities. Redd Fox became a beloved star; strange considering he was formerly only known as a "filthy" underground comedian. The dialogue included most of the ugliest racial epithets (not bleeped out); not for a cheap laugh, but to expose those terms for what they are: stupid and hateful. Exposure has a way of taking power away from mere words, censorship gives those words undeserved attention by making them taboo.
@realazduffman3 жыл бұрын
So great because it parodied so many things. It was a spoof of the shooting of Reagan, which happened weeks before this. But then the expert says the news media wants to make these shooters famous, seconds after the expert they go wall to wall on the killer. Then they spoof Son of Sam and his dog. Then they spoof Oswald getting shot. You had to have lived thru Reagan getting shot and all the "lets look at the video tape" to really get the spoof. This segment was most of the show that week and IIRC might have been over 2 shows. The full sketch might have ran an hour. They even had the Pope gibing a eulogy in another language with subtitles. In the middle of it the subtitles said, "This was a tragedy. Maybe some of you have not seen the video tape, lets take a look......." Kind of so clever that it could not be topped.

Except it's exactly how they covered things like Reagan's attempted assassination and attempted assassin, and the assassins of people like John Lennon and the Kennedy Brothers. And gave so much coverage to Manson. And so much more. People think shit's new when it's old.
@ns2110theonly4 жыл бұрын
It didn’t predict it. You must be super young. It was making fun of the coverage that had already begun with Reagan’s being shot & the hostages crisis in 79, both covered 24/7 by Ted Koppel that was how ABC Nightline started; this was just spoofing that. It didn’t predict anything it was spoofing something that was already going on then. Just like SNL does today- it didn’t predict anything.

When Mr Murphy found out about the real Buckwheat actor had passed away, Murphy decided to "kill off" his version of Buckwheat out of respect. A class act. Yes, he brought him back when Mr Murphy came back to SNL, but hadn't done the character after his 'death ' before then.

I was the ONLY kid in my small little school on the East End of Long Island who was allowed to watch SNL every week with my dad starting in 77, and I was in 3rd grade, from 3rd grade to 9th i would learn al the voices used and do the skits myself every Monday or until I did them all, which gave me even more confidence to just making my own skits and jokes and I could tear somebody into pieces with words by making a large group of people laugh at them. and make fun of teachers in the hallway..and they were terrified of me. all the best skits,kids would follow me in the hallways 40-50 to see what I would do next, all thanks to this show and my dad..hears where it gets crazy,my friend Dan Cast that now works on Impracticable Jokers, would wear a suit to school with a briefcase in 6th grade and move everyone away from me, I'm dressed like buckwheat. and say he has no comments, and it was almost every day for a year..we recorded songs in our music lab with my buckwheat voice, the Monday after this episode I stayed home, and Dan told kids buckwheat was dead(which was great because we took it to far lol)so Tuesday i came in dressed as normal lol
