Budapest, Hungary 2022
On one side of the River Danube is the hilly Buda district and on the other side is the flat Pest district. In the 19th century a bridge (The Chain Bridge) was created to connect these two districts and it became Budapest.
This Masjid is located in the Buda district, approximately 5 miles from the city centre.
I went there for the du'hr prayer this afternoon. Very modern looking building. What struck me is that there is no sign or symbol outside and it doesn't look like a Masjid. So if you are just walking past there is no way to recognise that the building is a Masjid.
According to the local law, they are not allowed to put any sign outside.
The history of Islam in Hungary goes back centuries.
The Ottoman Empire ruled the country for over 100 years in the 16th and 17th century.
During that time, Islam was one of the main religions and there were a number of Masjids and other structures all around the country.
Today all those structures are either destroyed or converted into churches..Only one original Masjid that survived from that time is the "Yakovalı Hasan Paşa Mosque", located in Pecs, about 100 miles away from Budapest. It is one of the oldest Masjids in Hungary today and fully active.
According to the 2011 Hungarian census, there were 5,579 Muslims in Hungary, making up only about 0.057% of the total population.
But according to other different websites, that number is way higher around 30,000 to 50,000.
The majority of Hungary’s Muslim population live in Budapest, and most of them are of Arab or Turkish origin.
This Masjid was officially opened during Ramadan in 2011, after going through a series of bureaucratic processes, mainly the controversial "Law on the Right to Freedom of Conscience and Religion".
It is a three storied building without any dome or Minaret and holds up to 1000 people. The Masjid has facilities for both male and female worshipers.
