That is an amazing amp! I tried one in a store and really fell in love with it. I ended up getting a Peavey Classic 20MH, because it's way more versatile (two channels, attenuator, pedal platform), but the Vox is still in my list... It's like you said about the edge of breakup sounds, the clean-up, the chime, the tremolo and reverb. The "Vox thing" is also not my main thing, but it's definitely a beautiful thing hahahah this is also an incredibly cost-effective and reliable amp! You see it everywhere!

There were a couple of moments there felt like there was a lower octave coming through somehow, really interesting. I've got one of these and I like it for the most part but even with the master and tone cut all the way up it still really sharp sounding if you're in front of it, its really directional.

Great video. I like the big broad sound of 335, Ibanez or Gretsch the most through my AC15. And fairly transparent overdrives, that can also just do a boost / thickening set at low gain, preferably with an EQ, since the Normal channel lacks it, and when playing quietly, pedal into Normal channel with Master Volume down is preferrable to using the Volume on the Top Boost. Some that work well are MXR Timmy, Boss Blues Driver and Hudson Broadcast. Or dark gainier overdrive with a spectrum tilt like Nobles ODR-1 or OCD/EHX Glove. Would love to get hold of a Crowther Hotcake though. Hope they re-issue or some manufacturer like Wampler or JHS does a modern take on the Hotcake. For gnarlier master volume-like OD at lower volume, an EHX Hot Tubes / Hotwax is cool too. Sort of similutes the amp being cranked at the master volume, but at the front end, good for practice or quiet recording. It's such a clear sounding amp that it loves a BBD / modulated delay and CE type chorus comes out lovely and clear, not muddy - a bit like a nicer sounding Roland JC-40. I'm going to try my AC15 stereo chorus, delay reverb, with Pathfinder 15 on the other side to see how they sound as a cheap / light pair - because the clean on the Pathfinder sounds pretty similar - just with slightly pointier, less full / less bass - but the mids are close. If it's no good, thinking of picking up a EHX Mig 50 Sovtek re-issue to do Fender Bassman / Plexi tones. Because it sort of completes the trinity somewhat, and would be a plenty loud pair.

Great video. Prompted me to read up on the history. Apparently the AC15 was the precursor to the more famous AC30. The designer Dick Denny had realised that for a rock & roll environment the 15 couldn’t cut it. His boss didn’t support the idea, so behind his back was making louder amps for the shadows from spare parts. His boss found out - they had a blazing row, but was given the permission to make 10 30W amps. The rest is history

Marshall 1974X is a fantastic amp but not so easy to use, specially at home. It is not a "allround" amp as VOX AC15. I'm looking to buy my frist tube amp (a huge upgrade from my Marshall MG15GR) and this Vox seems very great. The thing is I use OD and Distortion Pedals and I need a good pedal platform for these. Would you say this will take such rock/hard rock tone pedals well? And yeah this is probably the best review of the amp I've watched so far ;)

I think it could work. It’s very rock n roll, Marshall sounding. But it’s not bassy Think of Brian May’s tone. In love small amp and the reverb and tremolo are super great. Here’s an affiliate link for the amp. If you buy it from here Amazon will give me a small commission. amzn.to/3mcOgKh Thanks

Now I am starting to know how this amp should be used, it is a very useful review! Thank U for it very much! Lemme ask a few questions please! Does the master control an attenuator? If I have access to it, I am gonna buy the Vox AC15 C1X. But if I can not purchase that, I am gonna go for the Vox AC15H head. For the Vox AC15H head, what type of cabinet do U suggest? What Watt? Which speaker? Please help me a bit! Thanx! (Or should I just buy the Vox AC15 C1 combo with the Greenback speaker?)
@BuddaGuedes
@BuddaGuedes 2 жыл бұрын
They are very different speakers . I think the greenback is more normal sounding so if you only have one amp I would go with that. The blue is very bright and aggressive in a great way. The master works as a master. If you get it loud it will overdrive the power tubes too. If you turn it down all the overdrive is coming from the preamp tubes.
@gordospeti
@gordospeti 2 жыл бұрын
@@BuddaGuedes Yes, I would not say that either of the two speakers is better or worse, they are just different! So the master works as a master. Thanx! I am afraid a bit that my wife would find this 15W combo too loud if it's overdriven. Do U have any experience with the AC15H head? It has a power switch, so it should be quieter than the combo. Of course, buying the head would raise the problem of what cabinet to go for. (At present I have a JC-40, and I love it! But the best overdriven sound happens when the tubes in a tube amp naturally break up! Anything else is just NOT BAD!) The AC15 C1 is a very interesting combo, and it was your review helping me fully understand how it works, thanx for that!

Bill Carson, because the ac15c1 has a fixed bright cap into the normal channel volume control. That's why it will sound darker in your "special" Vox Ac15 version. If you turn the bright switch off you will remove that bright cap from the volume control, hence the darker tone. If you want it a just little less bright only when it is turned off you have to add a bright cap to your volume control and "deduct" that bright cap value from the bright cap in the switch, because they will add to each other when the switch is on. Simple!

Every one of those amps is midrangy specially compared to the mid scooped of blackface fenders. I prefere the fender topology for what I do, but I love the fox midrange, that’s why I own a 1966 AC30 and a Lead 125, as well as a bassman combo, a Marshall Master Lead and a Super Bass, and I also have my Mesa Boogie Royal Atlantic 100 with EL34 tubes , voiced a lot like a Marshall. @@BuddaGuedes Maybe it is a problem with the terminology. To me Tweed amps and old Marshalls have a lot (!) more mid "bump" than any VOX. So if a VOX is "too midrangy" they would have to be off the scale. But i get what you are saying. All the best! Cheers!
