Very good presentation! Sadhu sadhu sadhu! The Philippine archipelago was Buddhist historically. Long before Islam and Christianity came here. Concepts from Buddhism here today are woven into our languages and beliefs: gaba/karma, budhi, mithi, dukha, katha, and sampalataya. All these words came in from the time Buddhism was a major religion of Ancient Filipinos. Filipinos mixed Buddhism with Anitism (even the word diwata is from the concept of devata in Buddhism, or the race of gods and goddesses, who share this universe with us and can choose to help us and came to mean the same thing as our native Anito (nature spirits)), and Hinduism specifically in the Visayas. This is also why the Balete tree (Bodhi tree) is venerated even today, as well as the existence of sacred mountains. The Lord Buddha achieved his budhi awakening from meditation under the Balete tree (at Bodh Gaya). Buddhism doesn't force others to be any other religion. That's the beauty of this way of life. Whoever we are, whatever we belief, we can achieve enlightenment and gain a way to ending suffering by letting go of the ego and self, by acting with selfless loving kindness and praying for the well-being of all beings, human or otherwise. Buddhists pray for the well-being of everyone. Even if there are aliens, or creatures we don't know about, Buddhists pray for them to be well and happy and for them to also find Enlightenment. Buddhists also practice quiet meditation and alms giving. They don't want to cause suffering to others, and are against all forms of violence, killing, and war. Life and all things are impermanent and the universe has so many beings who are in suffering. Let us realise it and love each other because we are all one. We are responsible for putting goodness into the universe that we are a part of. That's all it is, even though the sutras (documents) are deep and intellectually stimulating for the studious. I wish Buddhism returns to the Philippines and is known by more people. it's a beautiful way our ancestors once knew and followed dearly before being subjected to the horrors of pirate raiding and colonization 🙏 Namo Buddhaya 💎🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

A foreigner who interested in studying history/culture passed by. Don't believe everything just because others tell you so. That's sign of uneducation and stupidity no matter which and how many degrees you earn. Fantasy or just a very few coincidence would not count as concrete proof to back up any tells. Modern history like all science based on facts and evidences eg. physical evidenes, trace of cuture (esp. before being colonized), records, etc. Search the records not from them (which, you can easily figure out, can say anything according to what they want or fantasy to be) but others eg. the Spanish who discover their land, and you will see that almost no Filipino interested in Buddhism. Only few physicla evidences eg. statues of Buddha in their land which lead to the conclusion by historians that if they are interested in this religion only those who did were rulers. Other than that, like all tribes (tribes, not kingdom with social structure/system eg tax, dynasty, etc.), they are animalism like all -- believe in superstitious. Search or I would say dig deep, not just scratch the surface, and you'll see of what I say. Not to talk that some historians argue of those few statues were bring to PH by others eg. Chinese, Indian, or Indonesian (which were expert sea merchants at that time and, in case of Indonesia, has concrete proof they were introduced to Buddhism. See Borobudur which based on Mahayana believe. That's a very good sample)

Add that it's like many Filipino who claim that they were fought along side Siam and Burma during their wars. Some even claim after the wars they settled there and mingled with the locals. If theye were hired to be mecenary at that time? Yes. There were many records. However 1. if they were so brave as they said the kings hire them more than once? No. Historian believe them to be just "private". The kings didn't want to waste their own people (whom, after the war, were their labors -- the most important parts in budiling ancient kingdoms) Also there are question that if they are that brave, why won't they were hired with long term contract? -- just from job to job, which was unlike others who were hired at that time -- Japanese, French, Mon (an ethnic of Myanmar), even Moor people. And all of these groups has their specific duty in the army from snipers (French and Portugese) to spy (Mon) to royal guards (Japanese), etc., yet no record of the Filipino at all. 2. impossible for them to mingle with the locals. At that time Siam and Burma were very stricted with foreigners. Even in Ayuthaya TH today still exist historical villages of Japanese, English, etc. merchants/mercenaries. You are Thai so you can easily visit or search for what I say. yet again no Filipino village at all.

I would say it is wrong to say vajrayana is the prevalent form of Buddhism in the Philippines. Mostly follows Mahayana instead specifically Chinese lineages and as well as Zen Buddhism from Japan. As one can detect directly from the Buddhanet Directory most temples here are connected to Mahayana. With at least one or two temples only for Vajrayana. Namo Amitabha Buddha 🙏

Vajrayana is not predominant now, but it used to be the original buddhism of Philippines according to archeological evidence. Filipinos interested in Vajrayana can learn about Tibetan Buddhism, or Shingon Esoteric Buddhism of Japan.

Varayana is still present in ethic filipino tradition, although forgotten. Upon researches and archeological digs done a lot of vajrayana artifacts were found in burial sites. In the same way a lot of ethic practices can be trace similar to vajrayana Buddhists tradition and customs. I myself is still vajrayani in the Philippines 🇵🇭 same with my other relatives. A lot still practice Varayana philosophy, customs and tradition without knowing it. " yan ang nakagawian na" or the norms in their tribes or families. Examples of artifacts are mindoro cave burial malas, dorje and bell were found, another famous find is the golden tara in agusan. Om mani padme hum.

Swasti! You are correct. Today, Mahayāna is the main branch of the minority Buddhists here. But historically, Vajrayāna was the predominant form here historically (before Islam and Christianity came here). In Sulu, Mindanao, Mindoro, Palawan and parts of Luzon. With the coming of Japanese and Fujianese Chinese historic migrants and traders (from 1000AD), Mahayana entered the Philippines too. Sadly, Islam and Christianity nearly stomped it out. Namo Avalokiteshvara. 🙏👌
