If you enjoyed this, stay tuned in a few days when we go to the historic Norman Petty Studios where I did an interview with the back up singer of Buddy Holly, and he gives a whole different perspective and opinion of Norman Petty, and Buddy and Norman's relationship..

I was thinking about Buddy Holly after the vlog on Roy Orbison. I was a little kid when I saw The Buddy Holly Story and loved it! There is something about that era that I’m in to. Any time there is a death by a plane crash, it always feels extra unsettling to me. So much talent taken away far too soon! This vlog was such a nice tribute to Buddy and I really appreciate that vlogs like this keep memories alive.

Don't! The movie is a travesty. It's full of inaccuracies. Buddy's pal Sonny Curtis was so incensed by it that he wrote a song in an attempt to correct them. Gary Busey did a good job of acting in a work of fiction. It's high time a new movie is made. If no one ever takes up the gauntlet on that, read the biographies instead.

This flight was supposed to be for Buddy and his two band mates. Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup. Waylon gave up his seat to The Big Bopper because he had been sick with a persistent cough. Waylon wanted him to see a Dr. Tommy was asked to trade seats with Richie Vallens just because he didn't want to ride the bus. Tommy decided to do a coin flip with Richie and lost. Both Waylon and Tommy carried a lot of guilt for a long time because of what happened. Tommy's parents had sent a package to him in the next city they were going to so Tommy had given them his Drivers license and fishing permit so that they could pick it up for him. So when you read the early papers on the crash they reported Tommy Allsup as one of the casualties because they found those ID's. Waylon and Tommy went on to inspire many people in the music industry.

I have heard those stories too . I watched a Waylon Jennings autobiography. When Waylon told Buddy he wasn't getting on the plane , Buddy told him well fine then...I hope your old bus breaks down . Then Waylon said , I hope your plane crashes . Waylon said , he wouldn't tell no one about that for a long time , because it really bothered him that he said that . He was afraid someone would think he had messed with the plane Buddy was on too . I could understand that . You know how people can blow things out of proportion ? It is a sad story at the end of his life .

@@bonniebrown6960 Yes you're right about what they said. It's just sort of friendly chatter between friends but he never thought it would actually happen. It was rough tour though. They had a drummer who suffered frost bite on the bus so he was already out of the tour. Very cold and miserable.

Jordan: Your Lubbock video was excellent, and kudos on the camera work; you do very well with the camera. So many people pan the camera too fast and one cannot see anything. I am glad to learn about Jerry Allison's house being saved. That museum was not there in 1996 when I went around the Buddy Holly sights. I am going to tell you some history, as I have studied Buddy Holly for years and live in Clovis NM - we are in Lubbock frequently because our medical care is there and it was a day in 1996 that I dropped my wife at the Southwest Plains Shopping Mall and went around the Buddy Holly sites - I want to point out a few things that you missed, and if you ever return, I will point out the places you missed and might want to add to your video. I would be happy to show you around, should you desire. Here is the information. 1. The house: Yes the house in your video is the final house Buddy lived in Lubbock and got married to Maria Elena there. It is not the house where Buddy spent his childhood or was born at. The site for that house was on 4th Street, which is now an empty lot with a sign by the City of Lubbock verifying that the house Buddy lived in was on the site. Due to an accidental overlooking at records, the City Of Lubbock sold the house to someone, not being aware of the historical significance of the house (or they would not have sold it) and the house was moved somewhere outside the Lubbock City Limits. To this day, no one knows where the house is located. They Jerry Allison house, now at the museum, was on 6th street when I saw it. I read it was demolished - that is why I was so glad that I saw the house in your video and can affirm that is the same house I saw in its original location. Thank God, it was saved. 2. Tabernacle Baptist Church (on 34th Street)...this is the church Buddy and his family were members of and attended. His funeral was held there with over 1500 people inside. I looked at the outside, looking in and thought "NO WAY that place could hold that many people - not even half. I went inside and the receptionist showed me around. She said the front looks exactly as it did when the funeral was held. The church was much larger in 1959 and was remodeled to take 3/4 of the pews out and build Sunday School classes. And yes, Paul McCartney visited the church as well. It is worth it to stop there and talk to the people who will tell you what they told me. 3. The Lindsey Theater: It was in the older downtown Lubbock area - when I saw it, it was in very poor condition, having been looted by vandals. Buddy Holly attended this theater often. In the 2000's, the theater because a nuisance and the city had it demolished. 4. The Funeral Home: It still has the look, armored shield and name as it did when Buddy Holly was brought here. It is near the Lindsey Theater. 5. The Roller Rink: The building that housed the Roller Rink, which is a red brick building is still there. It was going to be torn down, but the City of Lubbock saved it. Buddy and the (future) Crickets played there, and introduced their songs to the young crowds skating around. It is in the old downtown section. A few yards to the left was the local diner, called Hi-Dee-Ho, where Buddy and his group climbed on the roof and played to the crowd. it is no longer there. 6. The High School (19th Street). Yes, this is the high school Buddy attended. In the summertime when school is not in session (May through August), one can go inside the high school - see one of the actual classrooms Buddy attended and the desk he sat in. Also on display are some other Buddy memorophelia - his jackets, a wallet and other things. It is worth a stop to go inside. 7. Radio Station KDAV: Although there is a radio station with those call letters in Lubbock, the ORIGINAL KDAV station (which goes by other call letters) was the place where Buddy and Hi-Pockets Duncan formed their group "Buddy Holley and Hi-Pockets Duncan - Country and Bop. The production room looks exactly the same as it did when Buddy was there. The staff for the current station in that building has friendly people who would be happy to show you around and answer any questions about Buddy. I always wondered what part of Lubbock was the original KDAV in? To my surprise, I learned years later that it is only two blocks from the motel that I stayed in. The highway in front of the station will take you to the Lubbock Cemetery - which you have already seen. I have to see the Buddy Holly Museum, but I will see it when it re-opens after the COVID-19. I hope some of this information has helped you - as you know Kenneth Broad owns the Norman Petty Studios - the mixing console in there (called a "board" in radio terms, is NOT the original - a few years ago the City Of Clovis built the Norman Petty Studio, which I understand has some Buddy Holly things inside and I believe it contains the very small board that was in the Petty Studios on 7th Street when Buddy was there. Keep up the good work. If you are on Facebook, let me know and I will contact you. I think you live in Los Angeles area - I lived in California for over 50 years! abner

I couldnt pass it up so we took a quick cruise by the Buddy Holly Center without going inside. I did however go out and paid my respects at his gravesite in the city cemetery. Seeing those two places was a huge bucket list item for me! Very enjoyable look at Buddy's life of in Lubbock, Texas! You're doing exactly what I wish I could do! I retired last year from Disneyland and, and for 30 years prior, I got to know the history of Hollywood Forever, Westwood Memorial Park, etc. I appreciate what you're doing, young Jordan...!

Coming from a family of musicians, we always appreciated to impact Buddy Holly’s music had. Every Feb 3rd, “the day the music died”, we always put on Buddy Holly music and watch the Gary Busey movie of Buddy Holly. Here in NY you can head down to the Village (Greenwich Village) not far from the entrance to Washington Square and stand outside the building with the apartment he had lived in for a short time with Maria Elena (like the one represented in the movie). Keith Richards also has an apartment a few buildings down. Great video.

My Dad said he cried his eyes out that day... and let's just say I've never seen the guy cry over anything. Also, the day Elvis died there were some tears. My Pops had Elvis sideburns throughout the 1980's. Like alot of our Dads I'm sure. Thanks, fellas!

Dang I love looking over your shoulder on these trips with you. Looking forward to more to come! I think you should be carrying the “Road to...” moniker like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby did!

The day that Rock and Roll began and not the day the music died. Without Holly we wouldnt have so many great groups today like the beatles and the stones etc. Music lives because of Buddy Holly.

Bittersweet story of a life cut way too short 😢💔 But dang what a life lived in those 23 years!! 😁 Great to see where he initially nurtured his genius talent and like Roy Orbitsun, there is no mistaking their distinctive singing voices and style of playing guitar! Think daughters dating musicians still raises parents eyebrows!! 😂 Sweet story how he proposed marriage to his sweetheart!! Young love i tell you!! ☺ Glad u were able to have your Buddy Holly dream realized Jordan and thank u for inviting us all!! 😁
