Budget $100 car camping in my Subaru Crosstrek

I’m 6’ 3” and can sleep comfortably in the back of my 2021 Crosstrek Sport with my legs full my extended (barely). I lean the front seat all the way forward, and use an Igloo 28 qt Ice Chest to bridge the gap between the front and rear seat. Because the Crosstrek had that bump in the middle, I use a couple of 1/2” foam pads on top of each other to raise the feet and even it out.

You should make a video, people would love to see it. Most use Outback or Forester, not enough on the Crosstrek!

Try flipping the headrest around so it doesn't slope down. Works well.

Support the passenger end of the 'bed' with a board resting on the rear seat headrest and hanging by cords from the front passenger headrest hooks.

I’ve been camping out of my cross trek for several years now, and I don’t know how you can just throw an air mattress in the back and sleep on top of that. There’s a huge bump in the middle with a considerable dip -I’ve used an assortment of foam padding to level the cargo space out and then have used a closed cell thermarest pad with a good quality foam mattress on top. I also added support between the cargo space and the backseat, so there’s no big gap and it’s one long level area.

I agree. If you sleep with head in back, your feet will be higher than your head. Super uncomfortable to sleep like that. An additional foam piece under that end of sleeping pad will help

In the footwell on passenger side I have 2 small bins with my cooking items and that provides support.😊

I have the exact same Crosstrek, down to the manual transmission (which stupid Subaru has stopped manufacturing as of 2023, such a bummer). I have been wanting to go car camping, thank you for the inspiration!

I take the headrest off then put my ice chest in the foot well so I can sleep with my head on the other end. But you way works too!

I have the same setup in my 2020 CRv, but I do it on the other side so the back passenger side is used to sit and eat in. An iPad is attached to the back of the headrest allowing for comfort entertainment viewing.

Can you take the passenger headrest off and recline the passenger seat flat? Old school CRVs could do that, would be cool but I doubt any modern cars have that party trick.

Yes it definitely could work, but it would be cosy! The mattress pad I linked has snaps to connect two together down the middle to make a double bed. Have fun!

Hey @jadynestewart9683 I am planning on getting my Subaru Crosstrek 2023 Sport Manual Transmission model next month, in Toronto, Canada. I haven't gone to a dealership, but curious if you had to wait an extensive period of time until you got your Crosstrek? Like months? or weeks? Also, did you find that the dealership was willing to entertain any negotiation on price? Just wondering because its a lot of money and also with resale values being so expensive wondering if they are willing to budge to make a sale. Anyway, congrats on the new ride!

Hi we have an 18 manual…. Quite nice bought it for me to pass on to my son when he gets his GDL….. he drives it now like a pro. Great car good price… easy to maintain yourself. I recommend doing your own maintenance it’s cheap and easy….. we changed everything to amsoil after 500km here in Alberta it gets quite cold so having a good full synthetic in the engine and gear box /front diff and rear diff makes a big difference. You will be happy with the manual.

I’ve seen tall people manage it by putting your feet over the center console. Not a lot of wiggle room but doable. I’m only 5’5 and find the Crosstrek a bit small for car camping, but I do it anyway and love it.

Second comment I just heard you talk about battery drainage. I bought an battery (5 watt) trickle charger that I directly wired to my battery. Just an idea/ suggestion. I also have those window screens designed actually for shade on the inside of my rear windows. Just an idea.....🏹🤠👍

if your head or feet have to touch the ends you won't get a good sleep. Both ends need margins.
