That orange fibre is legacy OM1. It's not correct for SFP+ transceivers - the internal diameter is 62.5 micron rather than the correct 50 micron for an SFP+. It'll "work" on a short run (less than 30m) but you're throwing away your optical power budget with a massive insertion loss. About 90% of the optical budget will be wasted. This can result in errors and disconnects. Also transceivers get progressively weaker (TxPower) with age. That OM1 network might work today but as the transceiver ages and with that massive 90% insertion loss, one day will stop working altogether, and it can be very difficult to figure out why. I've seen this exact scenario in my own work (I install and repair fiber optic networks - incorrect use of OM1 is common). You should be using OM3 (aqua sleeve). Not only does OM3 have the correct 50/125 diameter there have been changes to the glass formulation (so-called "laser optimised") which makes it better for 10GbE. We think of optic fiber carrying a "digital" signal but it's actually an incredibly complex analogue signal with all sorts of analogue issues.

@Damian Chiliński For short runs such as patch cables OM3 in the same network cabinet is perfectly fine. I've ordered several OM3 from Monoprice on the cheap and suits perfectly as patch cables. For long runs such as into another building OM4 is way to go.

I have a hand-built Ryzen 9 3900X 12-core 2 4-thread 128GB-ram 4TB-SSD system running Linux Mint 20 and a spruced up Dell XPS-8930 w/64GB-ram & 2TB-NVMe-SSD running Windows 10, as well as my Early 2013 MacBook Pro. If going the fiber route, be sure to purchase the right cable for your length. OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4. Looks like the one in the video is OM1 which will only support 10gbe up to 33m before seeing reduced speeds. Most people aren’t running that type of length in their house but note that OM3 is pretty much standard, it’s laser optimized, and it’s only a couple dollars more.

Interesting bit of information on what the ISP / carrier side looks like: Most telco providers here in Toronto are running 6 SFC/APC single mode fibers to a residence and for larger complexes like 400-unit apartment buildings they run a 96-fiber cable but only pull three fibers off it for use. primary, backup, and one for the separated control network. In the case of a cable company, they feed to Commscope MD6000 fiber to cable interface unit that is paired for redundancy. That gives FTTB - Fiber to the building. This also gives them the ability to segment the network within the building and keep the RG-6 cable to each individual residence. It more a case of it costs the same to get a 96-fiber bundle as it does a 32 or 48 bindle in bulk (tens of thousands of meters if your Bell Canada or Rogers cable) Both Rogers and Bell are working extremely hard to get rid of as much of their copper cable plant as possible since most of it is from te 50's and 60's and is aging, corroding and incurring increased maintenance costs. Also, the network has reached a tipping point where there is now more fiber than copper in many urban areas and is getting close in suburban areas. Rural will still lag for a decade or more.

Thank you very much for the video. It was really interesting to watch. BTW, It is actually possible to SSH to Mikrotik devices in default config and do the configuration in CLI (in addition to the usual web based and Winbox config methods). Winbox also supports connecting to MikroTik devices via both IP and MAC address (via MikroTik's proprietary protocol in latter case). Telnet is also possible but not enabled in default config afaik.

Winbox can find neighbours when you have not configured IP addresses on your computer via the MAC address of the router or switch. Mikrotik are by far the easiest and most powerful routers per price point I have ever owned with unbelievable options available! Just an opinion as I have used many, Overall Mikrotik, Ubiquity and Openwrt (LEDE) are my favs. Great videos by the way! Regards Anthony

I'm using Mikrotik CRS317 for my home network (along with two CRS326). Most of my servers, PCs and NAS storage are using HP NC550SFP cards that you can get on ebay for $15. It's a great price for dual SFP+ card. For the SFP+ modules I'm using Finisar FTLX8571D3BCL than you can get for around $8. Regarding DAC cables, they are great to interconnect switches or servers within the same rack (Mikrotik has their own DAC cables you can get pretty cheap) but to connect your PC or other gear using LC-LC fibre is still much better way to go as you can go longer distance and the the cable is really thin. For short distances like 15-20m you can easily go away with OM2 cable.

You can get Cisco SFP-10G-SR for 8 bucks on eBay. It'll work with CRS305-1G-4S+. You booted RouterOS, if you are using it just as a switch, you can boot it to SwOS instead of RouterOS from System Settings.

Many ways to connect to Mikrotik devices. Webfig (which I typically disable), telnet (again, typically disable), mac-telnet, Winbox (which can use IP addressing or MAC addressing), ssh and in versions with a serial port, serial console.

I went to eBay to get a lot of old server gear cheap. I bought a lot of 3 Brocade 1020 NICs for $30, and a lot of 10 Brocade adapters for $10 total. I also got a similar Microtik switch but with 8 ports and mounting hardware to mount in a rack. For my IP cameras I got an 8 port passive 48V injector and used my old Netgear switch. It is pretty jank though, and might get a proper managed PoE switch at some point.

IIRC, you can just get SFP+ to 10GBASE-T module. That's SFP+ advantage: you can use all kinds of cabels (coper DAC, fiber or ethernet) if you have righ module

There's 40 & 100Gig-E but you have to build the switching device from scratch due to the expense (and rarity) of a commercial solution (good ol' frankenswitch). The NICS were about 800-900 a piece with 3-4 sfp interaces on them.

I found that sfp+ using modules has much better comparability with UBNT than copper especially if you have a different manufacture card than switch.

Its actually not uncommon that fiber ends up being cheaper than DAC cables depending on the length you need. For me it was cheaper to go with single mode and splitting a duplex cable. The duplex single mode fiber cable I got was really really cheap. Works great :)

So I just got this Mikrotik switch today and I found out that it has two operating systems, the default is RouterOS, but if you just plan to run it as a switch only, you can boot into SwOS. You can do so buy going into Routerboard > Settings > BootOS, here you will click the dropdown box and select SwOS, then Apply and you now have it running as a dedicated switch. If you made any previous configuration changes in RouterOS, you will have to reconfigure accordingly on SwOS.

I've never had any luck finding reasonably priced Chelsio cards on eBay. By the time I look they are gone. But I did buy a set of 2 Mellanox Connectx-2 cards off Amazon for about $40. In spite of some rather old posts that said FreeBSD (FreeNAS) didn't support them, that appears to not be the case now. I put one in my FreeNAS box and another in my XCP-NG box and they seem to work great (although I haven't benchmarked them). I'm currently doing just a direct-connect between the two as I couldn't find a switch that didn't cost hundreds of dollars. Good to know about the the MikroTik one when I decide to add a third machine!

@@jobliss3932 As for the bandwidth, I definitely use it. I have about 16 VMs running on the XCP-NG box and all the storage is on the TrueNAS (was FreeNAS) box. The spinning rust drives are slower than the network, so the iSCSI connection across the 10GB link works great.

You can get a direct attached active optical cable which has the fibre and sfp+ together for cheaper but you're stuck with the length you bought. I got one off of ebay new for $60 for 50 feet.

Not exactly. What you have is an emulated switch that can never keep up with a hardware switch in terms of latency, pps, and reliability. Don't get me wrong - it's fine for homelab, proof of concept and other uses. You can also ditch the switch and use point to point connections between servers with dac cables. Works fine for two or three servers, starts getting a little messy after that, and available pcie slots becomes an issue.

I've been thinking about building a NAS that would provide block level storage (FCoE | iSCSI) to a Type 1 Hypervisor (XEN | ESXi | KVM&QEMU). This looks like a good solution to support something like that. Any recommendations for a cheap NAS solution that can do FCoE or iSCSI?

Christoffer, all CRS3xx series switches support VLANs, RSTP/MSTP and 802.3ad bonding in hardware so in layer2 you get wire-speed.

Last drivers for those Chelsio cards: from 2010... yeah, I'm gonna go with a slightly more expensive card that's still actively supported. I've seen the MCX311A-XCAT go for as low as $30 apiece, though it's mostly $50 - but that's still damn reasonable for a 10G card that's got official drivers for Server 2019, W10 1809 and is similarly up-to-date for other OS.

I have some Connectx-2 cards that are even cheaper and will do ipoib at 40 Gb. I think the drivers were last update for 2012, but they work great in server 2016. I run them now in esxi 6.0. There are some ofed driver issues with esxi 6.5, and iirc, they don't work in that mode at all in 6.7. But that's all only a limitation of ip over infiniband if you want the higher speed and lower latency of infiniband. Put the cards into ethernet mode and they are rock solid 10Gb cards.

Hello Chris nice video, but i see some problems with your configuration. CRS Mikrotik's switches comes with two OS one is RouterOS, standart operating system for routerboards, it allows routing and so much L3 features, and dedicated SwitchOS made specific for Switches. SwitchOS has still kinda better performance results than RouterOS. Of course default Mikrotik config contain bridge and not real hardware switch feature (Just HW. offload). Hardware switch you can config in tab "Switch"

Mikrotik does not stop you from some bad configurations dependent on what hardware you have. There any many different chipset options. I was waiting for this video since you posted the picture on Twitter of the device. Great to see it now. But you should do the updates on the Mikrotik devices or setup a script to do it regularly because there is no big warning to do the update now or something like that. Both the software and the firmware need to be updated from time to time separately. If you recorded this yesterday the Router OS Version 6.43.12 wasn't the latest version. This would have been 6.44.2.

I just got this CRS305, two finistar 10g multimode sfp+ to fiber transceivers FTLX8572D3BCL-G1, and a 50 foot LC-LC UPC Multi-Mode OM3 fiber câble.. connected it up. I can’t get speeds mode than a 1G Ethernet connection. This is between my windows 10 and a unraid NAS. Both machines use mellanox x2 cards. I had a DAC câble between my windows and unraid server and worked fine (900MB transfers..) right now I can’t pass 15MB speeds. I’m at a loss. Jumbo frames set to 9000 on both machines.

Orange fibers are OM2 for 1G. Aqua fibers are OM3 for 10G. Technically OM1 or 2 will work for several meters but its not common practice.

Hm, that might explain why my iperf3 results max out around 6000mbps? I have 17 meters of om2 including a keystone coupler. I don't plan on replacing them since my raid array can't read/write faster than the above speed.

Hi Bubba, CRS3xx are layer2 switches that can do wire speed in switching but layer3 functions like routing go via CPU (and not ASIC) and limit you to about 1Gbit. You can take a look at the specs here mikrotik.com/product/crs305_1g_4s_in#fndtn-testresults

The thing is: I want to connect with my PC to the server in the network room over a 10GBE network... I would need a Switch with at least 2 10GBE Ports and a 1GBE port to put it into our network... It’s not possible to switch the CAT 7A cable against a fiber cable since it’s over 40m long and behind the wall... I need a budget solution with RJ45 but haven’t found one yet... Any recommendations?

The switch in the video is 4x10Gbps and 1x1Gbps. Sounds like it would suit your needs fine. Just use Ethernet SFPs instead of fiber.

what would you recommend on the low cost side of things, preferably with some form of management, for RJ-45? I have two machines with the Asus Aquantia based cards. My goal would be to have two machines connected at 10, and then have "dedicated" 1Gbit drops to all of our other machines, but to do it as cheap as possible, and using something that won't have questionable security (nothing from Russia or former Soviet republics), and have some form of management.

The Netgear GS110EMX (Managed) or GS110MX (Unmanaged) switch should be right up your alley. $169 for the MX or $200 for the EMX and it gives you 2x10Gbe RJ45 and 8x1Gb. Both are fanless and they publish a chart of what the EMX is capable of (which is basically all of L2 management. It's not a router and doesn't pretend to be). I've searched for a LONG time for this type of switch and it works perfectly with my Asus/Aquantia AQN-107 10Gbe cards.

so now get into tagging each of 4 different SFP+ ports on different VLANS. have 2 ports tagged for a couple and the other 2 tagged for 2 different ones and show how they can't communicate : ) then setup an IP phone on one of the ports and lets see if that works.......in fact, setup a computer/phone situation and untag the PVID while maintaining comms with the computer.

12:08 Stop using webfig, Winbox is the way. It allows you to have a UI that isn't shit, and it's allows you to manage the switch via it's MAC address as well as IPv4/IPv6. Hella useful, it saves me having to get a console cable all the time. Really wish more people used winbox, but every vid on Mikrotik in the USA seems to have ppl using Webfig.

Better avoid QuickSet, it tends to mangle configuration in many interesting ways.

This works well if you only plan to do switching between 2 10Gbe devices.. anything past 2 is shared on the single 10Gbe backplane.

Interesting choice of products to compare how DAC is barely cheaper option than SFP+Fiber not to mention you can't cable manage DAC as well as you can fiber. The OM1 fiber you are looking at is for some reason 7$ more expensive than a 1m OM3 cable, so it would make sense to get the OM3 cable. And even though they aren't on the supported list on the Mikrotik wiki I'm sure the Ubiquiti pair of SFP+ 10G transceivers for 15$ would work just fine. That ends up ~$21.99. So someone might understand why it confuses me when I hear DAC is way cheaper and the reason people choose that option. But I also prefer fiber so I guess you can say I'm biased.

MIKE ROW TICK not that hard people :D Glad to see some Mikrotik gear reviews over here from Chris. I use them at work and home, they are a very power full solution with a lower price point. The configuration can be harder to learn but once you learn it, the powerful tools offer you a lot of options. A lot of home users looking for a router / wifi should look at the new RB4100 series, a review from Chris would be cool.

For short distances it does not matter. I ran 1g single mode over multi mode fiber. By accident when I was just starting messing fiber

Yes, you should use OM3 fibers. Although you can use OM1 in a pinch for *very* short distances it's not the right fiber for the job - wrong diameter, wrong formulation - and the difference in price is so small as to not be worth worrying about. It's like using Cat5 cable (not even 5E) when you should use Cat6A.

HI, how can i make use of 10gbit speeds on a unch of WD red 3.5 hdd? is these hdd not a bottleneck? DO i need to invest in ssd or dare i say, nvme storages?

Hard drives can go 250 megaBYTEs/second. Which is about 2 gigaBITs. So hard drives are still bottlenecked by 1 gigabit ports.

If your router only has cat5e? I mean most internet connection are not 10gbps, and this would work in a small studio with one main server
