***MISPLAYS OCCUR. We had a long night and played in the BUTT crack of dawn. Let's remember people we are just having a good time and if things aren't perfect, it doesn't mean its cheating. I do agree if a mistake occurs, its not right, but nothing is intentional if there is a misplay.***
Fun times with my buddy Steven.
He loves to put together fun decks, trying to conquer the "Gold Standard"

I don't think Daniel is intentionally cheating, just misplaying. When you only care about card value, and not card text it happens.
@joel.lallier
@joel.lallier Жыл бұрын
I think it is intentional; it's not just one mistake. He is violating fundamental rules throughout the entire match. It's not as if the misplays are related to niche edge cases and bizarre card interactions. This just sets a bad example. There is no need to justify or make excuses for this.

There's a guy who I bought a stronghold set off of who runs a MTG business, and has been playing since alpha, and as someone who only started playing in the last few years, I asked what the alpha/beta days were. He tried to explain to me the mindset of the TRUE old school. The era of staying up all night at the cottage with your cousins. Or building a deck with the dual land you found to beat your friends at the lunch table days. He told me that among most casual people he ever played with at the time, you would literally hear "why would I spend 50 bucks on a black lotus when I can get mana from other cards and still have money leftover to buy card packs and snacks with!!". Also that packs were extremely scarce and hard to find before unlimited, and the general interest was in finding them/starter decks as opposed to singles for most people. I asked him if he thinks a lot about all the profit he missed out on and he basically said "though I would absolutely love to be able to go back and have the better financial security, the naiviety about that sort of thing was what made that era of the game so special and impossible to ever recreate/re-experience. It was the most fun I've had in all the decades of being involved with MTG."

Awesome story. I started playing when Fallen Empires came out and feel the same way, though I had the advantage of reading Duelist magazine for tips on deck construction, which most of my friends didn’t bother reading.

I STILL play that way, I never go to tournaments or events because the "Magic" of the game is lost with the whole pay-to-play mindset these days. The most fun you'll have is straight up tabletop games with friends. I started around Mirage or Visions (can't remember which) so I've been around a while, my advice to anyone just coming into this world is to find some friends that play or convince some to start and just have a game night. You'll have 100% more fun

Great video. I am a big fan of budget decks and I think budget decks are under appreciated especially in the legacy and vintage formats. The valuable cards get the hype, but there are card interactions and card combos in budget decks that can completely shut down prominent vintage and legacy decks.

It’s not *really* a huge problem, in general, these days, because mana abilities are no longer interrupt speed, and you’re effectively paying the mana as part of announcing the spell, and just because you can’t physically do both simultaneously, you have to do them in sequence - and it doesn’t really matter in which sequence. But it’s still a bad habit and one I’ve pretty much trained myself out of.

4:05 Spell Blast can counter 0 mana artifacts and 1 mana spells at low cost (and doesn't require double blue mana), can be better than Power Sink late game since your not dependant on how much mana your opponent has behind, but you can't force them to tap all their mana. It's not better / worse than Power Sink, it simply has different uses.

I think Collectors Edition is the future. I also agree CE/IE should be tournament legal. Card backs and corners don't matter anymore when you consider double-sided cards now, and it's not a reprinted group of cards. Daniel, for your opponent...it's "AnCEStral," not "AncesTREALL." Fun video! My favorite format. I wish more people would play it, even with homemade proxy cards (we allow that in San Diego).

I'm going to beat a dead horse by saying Daniel did misplay a good portion of the match and with that,you can't legitimately compare a 15k deck against a $250 deck when the more expensive deck doesn't only have massive card power advantage, but has misplays to benefit him as well. That being said, it happens. Hey, at least he doesn't have cards in lap or Mana weave like the "pros" do these days. But it is a fact that the more money you put in your deck in it's respective format, you ARE statistically more likely to win. That's why specific cards are more expensive than others; because they are effective and they win games more.

not always true. not by a long shot. Old school white weenie? Standard mono red decks? USUALLY true, sure... but only up to a certain point/amount. Like, in modern once you have about $5-600, if all you care about is winning and not what deck you play, it wouldn't matter if your budget was $1500. There are decks at 5-600 that are pretty much top tier. Standard right now has mono blue that's like 1/3-1/4 as expensive as most other tier 1 decks.

Beyond the first or second turn Black Lotus starts to lose it's power I think. The more mana you have on the table, the less important that 3 boost is. At the same time playing Ancestral Recall too early can cause you to discard cards because you don't yet have the mana to play them. As far as which card is "more powerful" It depends on what stage of he game you're in. Since the switch happens fairly early I would go with Ancestral.

@3:20 why not spell blast the ancestral? When are you getting a better payoff? He wouldn't have had the lotus w/o the ancestral resolving.

@8:39 you had drawn for the book @8:23 and took the 1pt of damage. You didn't have mana to draw both books.

I like these videos. It shows that to be competitive, you need expensive cards. The old school game is out of reach for 99.99 + % of the population.

Not true! Budget decks DO win even against The Deck. I posted a blue budget deck on my channel that's completely capable of taking down the deck. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHfYlYOoZ9V6iJI

Weird watching those side turn full taps with vintage cards. In the old days, that was noob move stuff. There's a reason the T tap symbol looked how it did.
