Building a budget blown small block from the original 63,000 mile 350 SBC. We gave it a bottle brush hone, a fresh set of rings and bearings, Comp Cams cam, lifters, and springs, and a brand-used Weiand 177 Blower we picked up off of Facebook Marketplace.
The engine received no machine shop work. I cleaned it honed the cylinders, lapped the valves, and put everything back together. I had about $2500 in the entire engine. That includes a SBC and Carb which are essentially free, a $100 Re-ring Kit from Summit, and I paid $2000 for the blower (never installed, still in the box). A boost retard ignition and wide band O2 will cast you another $1000 if yoy want to push the limits of the engine. It only makes about 400HP, but it looks and sounds great. Spending another $1000 on some good aluminum heads would easily take the engine into the 500HP range. No fuel injection, computers, or fancy wiring needed. Just a simple small block, an old school Roots Blower, and a hand me down DIY Draw-Through Blower carburetor.

Well done, sir. When I was a teenager just cutting my teeth on motor assembly I didn't know what rotating assembly balance EVEN WAS. I literally didn't know that was a thing. Swap rods, swap pistons without a care in the world! Somehow they always ran just fine and I couldn't tell any difference from the driver's seat. It was glorious. Also, good job on that main cap. You are god amongst men. I wouldn't have tried that.

Thanks for all the complements. People believe everything in an engine has to be perfect. And in extreme case, it needs to be pretty close. But stock to moderate builds have a lot of margin in the components. It’s hard to know what will matter and what wont. But you won’t know unless you try. So many people are scared to play cars because so many machinist and “professional engineers builders” make them believe they need to achieve perfection or nothing at all. I used to believe that growing up. I think the internet has done a lot to show people they can have fun without perfection or a lot of money. But the “pros” will always give people like me shit, and call me a hack mechanic, because it takes money out of their pocket. I’m not even a mechanic 😂. I’m an engineer that just happens to have a passion for anything mechanical, continuous learning, and entertaining people. So thanks for watching.

@@freedomworx I agree. Nowadays people on the internet think these motors are made of peanut brittle or something. Like they could shatter in a million pieces when you hit a certain RPM if things aren't perfect. They are made of much, MUCH sterner stuff than that and you can make FAR bigger mistakes building them than most people believe without any real ill effects. FYI- I run that same blower on a stroker 383 SBC made of junkyard parts that goes high 11s with a milder cam than you are running (Summit K-1103). It makes valvetrain noises like the valves are out of adjustment. But in reality the lifter bores are so worn out I can move the bottoms of the lifters back and forth about .050". Six years of weekend fun with cheap Walmart house brand oil in the sump it still hasn't blown up. I don't do any KZbin content but here's my ride laying it down a few years ago on a buddy's channel (I'm in the far lane in the white Malibu): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqvWdIdjrcd5o8U

I wanted to point out there was an eagle calling out at the end of the video when you were firing up your truck it basically said bring the freedom. Right on buddy super cool build and I'm glad to see another SBC being saved instead of an aluminum LS and boy would I love a screw blower. Maybe a 12 bolt posi and some 60 series tires on the back maybe some upgrades to the front suspension and breaks that would be my end goal if she was mine. The reason you do a cross hatch when honing the cylinder, it helps prevent the rings from rotating. If they rotate any they will eventually line up. That’s why they recommend putting the end gaps in a certain position to help prevent that rotation.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 4 ай бұрын
That’s simply not true. Crosshatching is to hold oil. Plain and simple. The oil is what actually seals against the rings. Every piston ring rotates in operation unless it’s pinned, like in a 2-Stroke diesel engine. It’s supposed to rotate, that’s what keeps them from getting gummed up and sticking. I’ve actually done a video on how ring rotation is measured by embedding a radionuclide is embedded in the ring to track rotation while the engine is running. It’s actually a standardized SAE test 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just so you know in a flat tappet camshaft cam break in is supposed to be immediately after first fire to prevent a lobe from going flat. Like get the timing kinda by eyeballing it, the fire it and immediately stick it to 2,000-3,000 rpm varrying up and down for 20 minutes. Gives your camshaft the best chance of survival. Good job with everything buddy!
@freedomworx

Easiest way to drop in a bumpstick--stand your bare block on its bellhousing end. Let gravity help you "drop" it in, and with no reciprocating assembly in your way, you can reach right into the crankcase to guide 'er with both hands past new cam bearings. You can even do this dry (so your hands can work the camera) and then grease 'er up before she reaches the final destination, getting the lobes and bearing surfaces.

@freedomworx
@freedomworx 9 ай бұрын
It’s not enough for a draw through blower application making 7 pounds of boost. Because a blown 350 turning 8k with an appropriate sized blower would be making like 800HP. Not going to do that with a 600cfm carb. It would never be able to make 7psi due to the carb restriction. It’s simple math. It would work in a blow through application, but not a draw through.

@@freedomworx Oh for sure. I'd be doing the same if I had 18v tools. I was referring to you saying that you wondered if the different battery would change the drill rpm. My point was that both batteries are actually 18 volt, so the rpm shouldn't change. I'm enjoying your videos by the way. I have a K10 in my driveway and an 8v71 blower on a shelf. when you pour "engine blood" out of a square, plastic bottle, turn the bottle 90 degrees so its wider flat surfaces face the floor. doing this lets the air get in faster behind the liquid, so the fluid doesn't "glub glub" pulsate out.
