Overlanding can be an expensive passion, and not everyone has the ability to fully kit out a million rand vehicle. This series is going to look at buying an affordable used vehicle, fixing it up and kitting it out with a very limited budget. We will need to prioritise things like fuel consumption, and versatility of the equipment we put on. This vehicle will not be mine, but my Uncle Andrew, who has been helping with filming over the past year, and this would be a nice way to give back to him by helping build his own overlander! So what is the vehicle? A 2009 Isuzu KB 300 Extra Cab with 4x4 and low range, This is going to be an excellent platform for him and his offroad and camping adventures ahead! Let the Budget Overlanding build begin! Im excited to see how ROAM 3.0 turns out!

In Australia, this vehicle is called (Isuzu) D-Max. From the outside it looks fairly straight and clean (no dings/dents and paint is in good knick), and depending on what is eventually needed to get in on the road, its a bargain (150k Rand is appox AU$13k). Fingers crossed, nothing major is wrong with it. 🤞 Looking forward to this budget build. 👍

Those club cabs are great. That space behind the seat is a perfect place for a fridge and battery setup. Then u dont need to worry about a fridge slide and can then make use of a full drawer system with tons of space for everything else. It's myideal setup with a ice cs opy and clamshell tent on top. Looking forward to this build.

Pulled out below from the net: The Buyers rights when purchasing a vehicle- The Consumer Protection Act gives you the buyer the right to choose between repair, replacement or a refund if there is a problem with the car, within a 6-month period after buying the car. Even if the car was completely fine at the time of purchase, the buyer has the right to have the seller help fix whatever may be wrong with your car if it's in the 6-month window. Depending on what may be wrong with it, the buyer has the right to choose whichever options gives them the most sense of comfort. For example, if the car's engine dies suddenly a week after purchase, the buyer might not feel comfortable keeping the car out of fear something else may go wrong. The buyer has the right to get a full refund since the purchase was within six months.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 жыл бұрын
Yup; we are aware of that. We still like the heart and soul of the vehicle and feel like it’s worth fixing. Most vehicles in our price range are going to have problems, and need maintenance. So we figured; we going to do it anyways, let’s just commit and move forward with the project. Worst case scenario it will be entertaining for you guys 😂

Hey Adrian! Just want to drop this comment and say thank you for being the main reason I bought a JB74 Jimny. I went on the very same 4x4 course you guys went on a couple years ago at De Wildt today and I must say, even in stock standard condition these little cars are incredibly capable. I know this may not really be relevant since the Jimny has been off the channel for a while... But yeah, I just wanted to say thank you for giving me that final push to get into a new lifestyle. I hope to run into you some time soon! lol

If this happened the day it was bought why not just take is back to the place that sold it to you? To have a clutch pop as you drive it away and have an engine light on I would have taken it back and told them to fix it! If they refuse then is piss poor service from their side. Unless it was agreed you drive it off the showroom floor then it’s your problem and no grace period.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 жыл бұрын
We knew it needed some work. So the lights on the dash we were fine with. However when we drove the vehicle it drove well. In the next episode you will actually see what failed. It wasnt actually the clutch; and as the story develops youll see all the little things. The dealers attitude was piss poor when we got in touch with them to sort some thing out; but we also bought it knowing it needed work and that it would be a fun transformation.
@labourlawact7826

2nd hand bakkie prices are out of control. New ones are even more insane.Not that long ago you could buy a 2.4gd dcab toyota for r400k new. Petrol versions was like r350k. This was early 2017. The 4x4 2.8gd6 fortuner a friend bought in 2018 was r540k. Now they are going for r850k. Insane. Another friend in australia bought himself a new prado for cheaper than our fortuners by r100k ..now thats just crazy. I have a strong feeling that crossover SUVs will dominate within the next 10years and bakkies will decline due to their insane pricing. Look at the new toyota suv they launched for r350k. Manufacturers will be looking to invest more into them and doing hybrids. This will make sedans disappear and bakkies become more a enthusiast/work car like the land cruiser. Way less demand for a bakkie. Interesting times ahead. What is your thoughts on that adrian?
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. Yet the market for bakkies in SA is just insane. Thats why the prices are high because the demand is so high. My uncles isuzu can only be insured for 109K yet we paid 150... It shows you that that impact effects us all the way down to even the cheaper bakkies are 50% overpriced. Its crazy!
@keanur6112
@keanur6112 2 жыл бұрын
Its definitely a sellers market now. Look at these prices below. This is what you can pay right now in australia. 2022 Toyota Fortuner GX: R520k 2022 Toyota Fortuner GXL: R580k 2022 Toyota Fortuner Crusade: R680k (this is top of range model) You can buy a top of the range fortuner for r200k less in aus than ours.(r850k) Now check this.. A top of the range prado is r300k cheaper in aus. It costs r820k vs ours that is r1.150mil. You can buy a lower spec prado for r650k over there..insane. And they import their cars they dont get built there.

@@RoamOverlanding Yeah, I agree with you, and understand better now. These people will still learn as with ASPW it's way better to be on a good footing with your suppliers and also sponsors. On the other hand, has anyone ever experienced an honest used car dealer? Personally I've always bought private and being a tech myself helps tremendously. Dealerships and used car dealers are best avoided at all costs. 😊 Enjoy the build, and sorting out the gremlins. Don't be afraid to ask, I've personally rebuilt a couple of those motors. Have the injectors tested, if they don't spray correctly, and on one spot, it can actually burn a hole in a piston. Cheers😊👍☺

Andy has taken early retirement after SAA the company he worked at for 30 years let go most of their staff. Not sure what doesn’t make sense; we are not here to try and pull wool over your eyes 😂
