Budget Overland Build Ep2: Its A Nightmare!

After a rough start, our budget Overlander is back up and running after replacing the cylinders associated with the clutch. Its now time to get the Isuzu Kb300/Dmax up on the lift inspect the entire underneath of the vehicle. Its quite shocking to see how much work we are going to need to do on this vehicle, covering everything from a leaking engine to shock absorbers, "Custom" lift kits, and a myriad of disconnected hoses and cables. It's almost a miracle that this 4x4 is even running! But we have an optimistic perspective on it all and with some elbow grease and digging into our budget, we are going to get the bakkie running like a beauty in no time, and Andy will be enjoying it out on the open gravel roads soon!

Question is: How on earth did this vehicle pass the roadworthy test? Looking at the underside of this vehicle, oil leaks, loose wire and pipes, missing brake sensors, speedo not working , there is NO WAY that this vehicle was properly inspected by a certified roadworthy test institution and that is a question Andy needs to ask the dealer. R 150k is a lot of money for a retired person now facing additional unnecessary costs on mechanical issues, which should not have been there, if this was properly road tested. Remember that VOETSTOOTS clauses are no longer legal, as prescribed in the Consumer Acts. You have, I am sure, some claim against the dealer, for latent defects. I suggest that you do not let sleeping dogs lie, but wake them up, so they can start barking, especially pertaining to the roadworthy issues. I hope you will be able to recoup your unnecessary expenses.

We are definitely going to get in touch with them with a list of the things we have had to do to get the vehicle roadworthy. They didn’t do the roadworthy, they left everything for us to do. There are some things we definitely are going to make a stink about don’t you worry! For the mean time; I guess it will at least be entertaining to watch and the transformation will be awesome 🤓

Definitely wont buy a vehicle from that specific dealership. How did it pass a roadworthy test?

@@robertstadler1502 Roadworthy test means nothing in South Africa. I personally know of a couple of testing stations that gives you the certificate for a few bucks under the table. Bet you the car dealers and those testing stations have a very cosy relationship. Besides, roadworthy doesn't tell you it's a good vehicle. It can come with roadworthy, but it's been butchered. Seems like this is the case here. Wish they could cancel the whole deal, and start over. Also, never ever buy a car from a used car lot. They're probably the biggest skelms you can get, next to the new car dealers waiting to rip you off. I worked in the trade for years, you have to be super cautious and suspicious about a used vehicle.

SA living in UK and Germany - I am stunned by the cost of used vehicles in SA and the absolute rubbish that is sold at prices that are simply crazy in comparison with what is available in the UK and Germany. I bought a Jimny here (thanks to you) - 2008 model in stunning condition for £3200 tax inclusive. Just gone through its MoT and not a single issue. It is honestly approaching the point where it is cheaper to live here than moving back to SA.

I drive a new KB300 lx 4x4, Isuzus are reliable as all hell as long as you don't let Isuzu near the car

@@RoamOverlanding nope and the workmanship is shocking.... The most damage done to ISUZUS is by ISUZU during your service plan and warranty period...NO JOKES, I have never wished for my jimny back so badly after dealing with ISUZU.

It’s good for people to see what’s out there, and to be super cautious when buying. Initially looking at it, you couldn’t see much of these things. Once you lift it up it’s all obvious

I also bought a used Isuzu recently. On the gearbox is a small push in fitting for the speedometer. I cleaned mine with electric cleaner and it is still working. And yes I had to redone the engine which cost me R18k. Should you get stranded in Upington area I would recommend the person that fixed my Isuzu 💯 persent. Can't wait to see the progress on the "LOW BUDGET" build...🤠

At that mileage I would definitely get the injectors refurbished or replaced. Cam belts or timing chain etc. Really looking forward to how this series unfolds.

Import the Wheel Speed Sensors if you can. Picked up original Astra Wheel Speed Sensors (Febi Bilstein) stamped GM from EBay UK and they set me back £11 pound each as opposed to GM SA who wanted R1900.00

Wow. It looks like it has a lot more things wrong with it that first thought. What was this vehicle used for prior to Andy purchasing it? Why so many of the items in the vehicle have been disconnected?

No flipping idea; the dealer were so dodgey about everything. Look it’s nothing that can’t be fixed, we will submit some stuff to the dealers because there are certain things that should have been sorted out

That's why you never buy from a no name brand dealership. The dealer/seller is responsible for road worthy and if they were not doing it then its a red flag. So many red flags not sure how it was even decided that it would be a good buy?

We did buy as is, we wanted it for abit cheaper because we knew it needed work, we just didn’t realise how much work. But this is going to be an entertaining show for you guys at the very least.

Take that vehicle back to the dealer and demand your money back. Save yourself the effort of trying to fix that pile of @#$&. I think you will find more problems the deeper you get into it.

Doesn't happen in Australia we got somthing called fair trading where I buy something from a business I have a problem I can't resolve with the seller I can make a complaint, get my money back and that business should be heavily fined or shut down if found guilty... off topic, standard rear diff lock sounds pretty sweet

Name and shame the dealer! I would suggest checking the body panels for alignment as well. May have been in an accident. So have a good look at the chassis as well. If you get the nigglies sorted and a proper roadworthy pass, at least then the actual build can begin. I hope some of the Hilux sponsors step in to help Andy get his dream over landing build sorted. A few carefully placed logos from them would benefit Andy and the sponsors👍
