Its also helpful to understand the differences between gain and volume controls themselves. Gain controls are always placed on the input of a component and volume controls are always placed output of a component. Only a gain control can distort or overdrive the signal, while volume controls can't alter the signal. Thats why gain and preamp tubes are focused on so much. A volume control just attenuates the signal. When the power tubes distort, its not due to the volume control. More volume can't add more distortion like gain can, it just lets more signal through and that's what makes the power tubes distort. Knowing the relationship between gain and volume can allow you to get better tones at lower volumes. if you get the exact sound you want on your amp, but its too loud, add a preamp pedal. A preamp pedal will have gain and volume controls that are isolated from the guitar amp. If you add a small amount of gain on the pedal, then just use the volume control to adjust loudness. You'll be able to play at much lower volumes without touching any of the controls on the guitar amp.

Hi Dan, I was wondering about analog drive pedals. Do you use/recommend them in front of the GT or through one of the Fx Loops?
@DanLeggatt
@DanLeggatt 10 күн бұрын
Either! Works great both ways. In fx loops it gives you the ability to move them around in the signal path and turn them on and off if you change presets. If that’s not important to you, I’d just keep it simple and put them in front. Hope this helps.

I realize I am super late to the party but regarding the little blocks that hold the strings in, you're correct that the floyd rose versions don't fit (they are square instead of rounded), but I found that the entire saddles on the floyd rose non-fine tuning bridge can be swapped with the ones on the charvel GG bridge. So that's at least one option if you ever lose/need to replace part of a saddle.

I am an absolute beginner and got this guitar about 7 months ago as my first guitar. It is hard for me at my stage to differentiate guitars. But I pulled the trigger because I knew that Gretsches are quality, and the guitar was at a steep discount from an already good price. For maximum playability, I got it professionally set up and switched the factory strings (10s) to 9s. I love it. It is beautiful looking as it sits in the room and easy to play. I always want to pick it up. A great bonus is that it also sounds good unplugged, making it easy to practice when the wife snd daughter are in the house. Perhaps my only criticism as I get a little experienced and more discriminating about sound is that I might want my next guitar to have slightly more high-end jangle.

I understand that you also have the Kemper. How does it compare tone and feel wise? There's something a bit spiky in the kemper high end that I don't like. Does this get a more organic sound and feel. A little warmer and realistic? By the way very nice review and great playing!

Can I use GTX in front of my preamp to use AIRD booster, WAH and compressor effectively? Will it give me a real signal boost for OD channel?

GTK today seems to be the best solution to play with tube amp in one rig. As it is: 1. The most compact FX board on a market with AMP CONTROL feature. All other like Line6 HX Effects are much heavier. 2. Has great FX sections and modern 32 bit core - you shoudn't want to use GT8 or GT10 in front of Your valve preamp today 3. Can be effectively used both for recording and live jams 4. Has IR support making it perfect for recording together.
