Very interesting review/demo. I always thought that the JCM 800 or DSL were the best Marshalls for 80s hard rock (as well as those Valvestate Marshalls from back in the day for those on a budget). Since this series of amps is modelled on an old-school Plexi I figured this was strictly for 70's classic rock.

Thanks! I definitely think this is geared for 70s classic rock, but obviously it can easily do 80s too with a good overdrive. Much more versatile then people realize. Lots of 80s guys played Boosted plexis. Malmsteen, evh etc.

I have a Marshall Origin 20 in the Combo version and I can easily get the sound and tone of hark rock, metal or glam metal from the 80s. I use a clean channel without the booster, I set the Fulltone OCD version V.2 stombox with the drive set to minimum, the tone at 1:00, the volume a little over half and the switch to the LP position. And before Fulltone OCD, I run Boss Super Overdrive SD-1 with the drive at 9:00, the tone at 12:00 and the volume at max. It gives a beautiful, singing tone typical of 80's music, I recommend it. You don't have to buy expensive, fancy Marshalls to get the sound of those times. In my opinion, the Marshall Origin 20 Combo works great for this type of music and, importantly, there is no need to modify this amplifier to get the pure distortion of the 1980s :).

Excellent demo. Very clear explanations and useful variations on the approach to adding more eighties-style gain to the amp’s stock tone. One word of advice for those of you who choose to use effects in the loop: it won’t work properly if the master volume is on 10, or thereabouts, especially if you’re using delay and/or reverb. While you’ll hear the effects, the sound won’t include the distortion in the mix. This drove me crazy until I lowered the master and cranked up the gain. Someone on one of the Marshall forums came to the same conclusion (Marshall’s tech support didn’t!). Even with those changes, I still got plenty of gain, to which I’d add a boost or overdrive for some extra zip. I absolutely love this amp. I’m currently playing it through a 1x12 cabinet containing an ancient Rola Celestion 8 ohm speaker. A sweeter sound would be tough to find.

I think this this sounded as good,if not better than Plexi demo you did…I think these Plexi and 800 style amps are great at 80’s tones,..You gotta remember,in the early 80’s there were no high gain amps by our standards today,so everyone was using old Plexi’s and 800’s to get “that sound”….great demo, sounded awesome…Now throw a chorus and delay in there,it’s the 80’s for Gods sake,LoL!!

Cool tones and while I'm not really into 80's metal I love this amp. I've got the combo and I put a Celestion Greenback in it which I like better than the stock speaker but to be honest the stock wasn't bad at all. I wanted plexi-like Angus sound for studio recording and that's what I got. It's not a perfect match, there is no free lunch, but very pleased with the amp, suits my purposes. Hangs with my 1969 Princeton in terms of usability and fills in those gaps that Fender won't do. And now thanks to this vid I know how to cop that 80's feel if I need it, thanks!

I have the 50h and really like it. It's no Peavey VTM but pretty great nonetheless. I recorded a viking/power metal song with it using absolutely no pedals (save for delay for the lead) and did not feel there was any lack of gain on tap with just the amp. I know it is often compared to a Plexi but I find it is a little more like the Bluesbreaker/JTM 45, which is still basically a Plexi but a bit less gain. Almost like Marshall used the JTM gain stage and the Plexi/JMP tone stack. To be fair, with the proper arrangement of pedals and patience, literally any amp can do any type of tone.

Heres the conclusion I've come to. In this wattage and price range(give or take a couple dollars or watts) there's this amp, a Blues Jr, a Blackstar and a Vox. Evidently Blues Jr's are biased to self destruct, Blackstars are part tube and part digital and I just don't like the sound of an AC15. A 20 watt DSL is $150 more. If you could find one in the US. So this is what I'm left with. It IS a Marshall, has plenty of power for my needs, it is a tube amp and, I think it sounds pretty damn good.

I have the 50h and love it. One thing though is that once you get the master past 8 it gets a little whooshy, like there’s air wanting to exit through a tiny hole (did I just write that ?) That same thing was present in your demo So I tend to keep master and gain around 7-8, no pull boost. On top I use a TS9, gain down, level up, which boosts the signal, tightens up the bottom end and adds extra mid colour that I can tame using the amp mid knob. All the rest is just playing with the guitar knobs. I am not into 80s tones, rather 70s and less gainy, but that combination, with guitar tone and volume knobs on 10 can get me in a territory close to early Metallica for instance. Not identical, but similar gain-ish mid-ish tones with lots of definition.

For chord tones,..The "amp only" sounds best by a significant margin to me. The Marshall has plenty enough drive & gain...Most of the 80s tones were not nearly as high gain as some people think...Some of those guys were using a lot of gain but not most of them. Too much gain is not a good tone. Single note leads,..were also slightly the best through "amp only". I love this amp,..It is very close to the JTM 45 plexi-based expensive offering by Marshall..I have both. The Origin is a little more practical than the JTM but gives up a little bit in tone but not much.

Ok. I have a question I am looking for a good practice amp for in my basement. I am on the road a lot and hate lugging everything from the practice room we rent to my house just to be able to practice. Also my wife and I just had our first baby and I need something that don’t shack my neighbor’s house when I practice. I was looking into one of 3 amp. There was the Fender Bassbreaker 15 amp head (but it seems to have a lot of issues), the Marshall DSL20 or the Marshall Origin. I play 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s rock, hair metal and Thrash. I have plenty of pedals to push the sound if needed I just need to be quite now but still want the valve sound. I have about $900 to spend would prefer to stay around $700. I think the Bassbreaker is out unless someone knows for sure that have fixed the issue with the amp. But out of the two Marshall’s or if someone has another suggestion that would be great. Just think I’m to tired to think any more lol. Thanks for any help. Great vide just found your channel today. You have a new sub.

Thanks! Honestly this amp is wayyyy too loud for your needs. Look at the dsl20. It can be run in 10w mode. Demo vid on the channel. These plexi amps have are just insanely ungodly loud. Way too much for 90% of people

@@shredaintdead9323 just watch the DSL 20 vid it seems with it I might not need many of my pedals. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or not lol. Thank you for the suggestion. I did really want the Fender Bassbreaker but cannot see paying for something that has so many issues. I will be getting the DSL 20. Thanks again.

Well, that’s the BEST attempt I’ve ever heard, of getting that utterly shitty box of obviously drunk Marshall engineer’s worst ideas going. But the blanket still keeps dropping on it in regards of pick attack & palm muting. I once saw a guy throw his into the dumpster, (literally, I’m not making this up, except for the end of the story. Throwing it away was the end of it’s story.), & the horrid thing crawled out & followed him home because even the public dump wouldn’t accept it, either. You got some kind of magic, bro.

You make it sound great, but I can tell from the demo it’s not the amp for me. When you have the skills you have every amp you play sounds good. I play the same amp with the same pedals and it sounds like garbage.

Haha thanks buddy. Yeah this amp won't be for everyone, but definitely for vintage amp lovers or more experienced players.

The very first thing anyone who buys any Marshall amp is get rid of the cheap Chinese tubes! Get some good RCA preamp tubes and it quiets down any noise in the amp, and drastically improves tone and gain!!!

In the 80s most marshal guys were using vintage style Marshall circuits sometimes wirh a mod gor more juice and/or a Boss SD1 DS1 Tube screamer MXR Distortioon plus or Ratt pedals so a vintage Marshall circuit on its own is not far off . Never really got the whole uh dude dont you know a marshall Pexi is blues amp or a grandpa rock amp . Its not supposed to play metal along with the your not supposed to play heavy rock on a les paul ? Why are you playing metal riffs on a Jazz guitar bro ? Even though all the first generation les paul players in the mid 60s were rockers because prior to 1965 very few people wanted the damn things . Jazzers didnt even like them for most part. They found them too heavy and thought the tone was muddy and too dark and also thought the pickups were too hot because the distorted the amps at a time where amps were low wattage with llittle headroom and loud cleans you coud hear in a band mix were the order of the day . If you got a 59 LP that happened to get one of those PAFs that was accidently wound to 8.5k plus when the target was 7.5 k and Most single coil fenders were 6k to 6.5k. Your 8.5k + humbucker woudl be like a flame thrower httimg your 15 watt amp . I remember Jimmy Page talking about Trying trying one of his Les Pauls through his litte supro combo and he said he decided not to use that combination because the world wasnt ready for that sound yet and said that the level of Distortion it produced was way ahead of its time and that was in the late 60s

Every Marshall sounds 80'rock and metal when you put an DS1 front of it and lots of reverb with delay on solos😂
