Me and my husband at the time took a 23ft O'Day from North Carolina to D R . That is just the smallest, I have stories 25ft Irwin, 30ft Irwin, from Fla to Panama , Yucatan etc. All glorious trips!!!! You are so right about not needing certain boats.

Exactly, while the ones you mentioned are quote a bit smaller than this one still, look at all the sailing you were able to do 😁 Facebook sailors sail their living room, rest of us actually sail the oceans

I’m a big fan of Westerly. They’re older, which helps on upfront purchase cost. They’re hard to find here in the US but seem plentiful in the UK. They’re reputation isn’t the best, except in one demographic: Westerly owners. The nay Sayers appear to be on the outside looking in. They have good bilge keel options on several models. That’s my preference.

In Europe us boats are not this cheaper. Right now there are very few good and inexpensive boats at the market. Only in UK u can find some.

Most any boat you buy for under 50k, outside a real stroke of luck will need 10k if not 20k in upgrades. To respect Chris’s point he is attempting to get a new sailor out on the water as quick as possible for the most cost effective options as possible, all his videos meet that criteria and are very good. Every new sailor has different goals and most of those goals will change and evolve with experience. I was very surprised that my upgrades and accessories over the last few years is quickly catching up with the 28k I paid for my 34foot boat. It is said when buying a used boat expect refit cost during the first few years to run on average 25% to 50% of the cost you paid for your boat, I find this to be true. Here we are not speaking about day sailing, that most likely you can do right away. We are speaking of long distant coastal cruising and island hoping. And if your like myself who wants Radar, AIS, autopilot and a good house bank of batteries capable of operating for 3 days without a charge if need be. You can always go with less and many do, yet it’s nice to go in a motor-home and not a tent. And it’s also nice to have if you can swing it Radar or AIS better yet both. Again that is once going beyond day sailing. Someone mentioned something very important for want to be live aboard. Check with your prospective marina for minimum requirements. 30 foot to me seems for most the cutoff as far as being practical for one and a big if for two. Just one man’s opinion with a 34 foot dock condo Lol.
@ChasingLatitudes2 жыл бұрын
Some people seem to get confused, you make a video like this and then boom OMG you cant take that off shore, no kidding, not everyone needs or wants to go off shore. People act as if budget has no meaning, if your budget is 30k and youd lik eto get on the water, this is the best one possible, if your budget is 30k and you would like to spend 5 years doing a refit and throwing another 50 or 100k into it then so be it, but thats not this boat.
@svsandpebble2 жыл бұрын
@@ChasingLatitudes Yes, in my post I mentioned that day sailing or like in my area of Southern California going for a weekend trip to Catalina island 25 miles out does not require much if any refit, although I really like radar for the surprise fog that comes in. At my marina of about a thousand boats 90% never go further then Catalina. Most have never made it to the Channel Islands known for rough seas 60+ miles away. Yet I find most of these sailors who are active at my marina having the time of their lives. This is my first real boat, I purchased her 3 years ago with no regret. I would not trade the adventure, the countless new friendships and being spooked once in awhile as I’m taken out of my comfort zone for anything in the world, accept maybe a bigger boat Lol
@ccwoutdoors3602 жыл бұрын
I agree with the 25% rule for the most part if you are going to outfit for cruising. I paid 20k for a 30’ boat and will have put around 6k into her by the time it is fully outfitted for cruising doing all the work myself.
@svsandpebble2 жыл бұрын
Wow Stella I’m impressed about tackling the upgrades yourself. Not to be a chauvinist it is I find boat work both fun at times but also the need to have good skill, I’m sure you do. I have been an industrial machine control contractor all my life and now being in the process of doing a total Victron electronic upgrade I find it trying at times let alone expensive. Good for you, what to they say? You go girl. 😎😊

If I was looking for something to bomb around on weekends or maybe for a week or two this would be an option. Though I don't like the B&R rig because it forces you to broad reach and jib when going down wind if you want to fly the main. Of course you can drop the main and fly a spinnaker but for solo sailing I'm not sure I would want to do that for safety reasons. I'm not worried that it doesn't have a backstay. It is just too much like sailing a cat downwind for my liking.

We own a 33.5 Hunter. Perfect for us to have something to sail. Maybe 10-15 years down the road we may upgrade. Bigger = bigger wallet… parts, repairs, maintenance, $/linear foot. Check local marinas if you plan to stay seasonal. So many have a long waiting list. If it’s seaworthy, fits your budget, get out there and just do it. It will change your life! ⛵️

Fuel tank is plenty big for the 2GM20 Yanmar. You can cover some serious distance on 20 gallons, and easy to carry a couple 5 gals if you want to extend. For tanks, the thing I wish were larger is the 20 gallon holding tank.

I am so frustrated with shopping for a sailboat. I feel like in "Pretty woman"-- I have money but No one will let me buy anything. I'm in South Louisiana, I work full time and there is nothing here for me! And boats are incredibly overpriced! I'm looking out beyond my area, of coarse, but also NOTHING that meets my search! My search is similar to your suggestions. My goal is to become a coastal cruiser and Island hop by the time I retire in just a few years. In the mean time OPB's are great, but it's day sailing only at this point.

Not really. Hunter 28s and arguably Catalina 28s are simple and cost effective boats. Running a 28 footer for two years might cost $10k over 2 years after taxes, marina fees... after you sell it. The extra $10k isn't going to get you into that much better of a boat.
