Budget SOPMOD M4 build to make the snobs cry

After several years of watching people catch flack on the internet for their more budget minded builds, I decided to build my own to see what the big deal is.
Spoiler alert, it's not a big deal. There are ways to do budget builds and ways not to, but a well thought out Aero or PSA will get the job done 90 percent of the time, every time. The capabilities of the shooter, the shooter's ability to rapidly close with and engage, these are exponentially more important. You can buy your way to success in some endeavors, but that's how you hurdle into a plateau you may never scale. Be humble and be kind. Remember that there is a human being behind every build. Advise and assist people in bettering themselves but have some humanity while doing it.

@@jordendavid8992 generally speaking, most things, be it computers or guns etc, will either fail new out of box, or after time due to wear and tear. What that means in practice, is that your budget gun is more likely to have a problem out of the box (worse Quality control), but if you take it to the range for a day and make sure it’s squared away, it should be good for the next few thousand rounds. The DD might be good for 2-3x as many rounds as the budget gun, but most people barely shoot 1 or 2 cases through a gun, so wear and tear isn’t a factor.

Dude, what an awesome video. And it’s true. I was lucky enough to do a couple year stint as a narcotics & fugitive apprehension detective. There were five of us, usually operating covertly and unsupported. Terrible hand me down equipment, terrible vehicles, old guns, low tech, low budget, and extremely high op tempo. To this day I cannot believe how effective we were. Truly an amazing experience. A wise man once told me, what you carry in your mind and in your heart is far more important than what you carry on your belt. Couldn’t be more true. Subbed!

The gear we used in Afghanistan back in 09-10 was painfully bad compared to nowadays and we won decisively in almost every engagement we got in mostly because success in a four dimensional battlespace boils down to proper planning, coordination of fires, communication, maneuver, individual and unit level discipline, TTP's, and judicious utilization of immense violence of action.

True story, but train with and go to the static range officer controller environment is not training, it's shooting. I realize not everyone has access to it, but I can tell you right now I have had 2 M&P 15, one broke on me at a training in Tennessee, and the other broke on me in a training in southern Ohio. Most guys will not run through 1000-2000 rds a year, hitting a training event where you're going to burn that up in 2 days will show you just how piss poor your equipment is. I learned a lot about how deficient a weapon is built and name alone means nearly nothing. Seen many bolt failures, had one myself, shitty rings, the other one had two failures, first the ejector failed, and then the gas tube failed. When I got it back to my gunsmith he showed me that the tube was not fully inserted and burnt a pit and was allowing gas to spew out at the gas block, causing cycling issues. If you are truly relying on it to be ready to endure hard use, you have to get it there and punish it, make it work, only then will you truly know that it is going to do what you want it to.

Absolutely Aero & PSA lowers are excellent, We have used them for a bunch of builds. I 💯% agree, an Aero or PSA lower & BCM upper, is the best, sub $1000 DI AR-15, you can get. Same for piston rifles. An Aero Precision lor PSA lower, & Primary Weapon Systems MK116 Pro upper, was the best Sub $1000 piston rifle you could get. Now that PWS has discontinued the Pro series of rifles and uppers, An Aero or PSA lower, with a Wolf T91 upper, is absolutely the best sub $1000 piston rifle, you can get. Hell you can put one together for under $750 when you catch the T91 upper on sale.

In my opinion for a decent budget build: 1. Most civilians will not need a sub-MOA barrel, nor a barrel rated for tens of thousands of rounds of life 2. If you don't use an aiming laser, you don't need a super quality handguard 3. If you MUST have a two-stage trigger, the Schmid 2-Stage NiB trigger is less than half the price of a nice Geissele 2-stage 4. Don't cheap out on the BCG. However, don't put your money on gimmicky coatings like TiN, put it into a quality, spec phosphate or chrome BCG. Also, buy a spare bolt 5. Again for civilian contexts you probably don't need an optic that costs more than $400 6. Rail-mounted weapon light and sling Where else you should spend your money instead of "upgrades" are: 1. More ammo - cheap 55 grain .223 for training, and a stockpile of your choice of duty ammo 2. Training - learn from a reputable instructor 3. Avoid diminishing returns - do you really need a marginally better optic for hundreds of dollars? 4. Enhanced capabilities - instead of building a second/third/tenth rifle, invest in body armor, night vision, and/or a suppressor

You hit the nail on the head. Any button rifled nitride barrel from BA, Faxon, Rosco, Kak etc etc will be more than adequate for most shooters, and have plenty of life. When they go on sale for under 100 bucks, buy an extra or two. Pair that with a Microbest or Toolcraft Phosphate BCG, and your way ahead of something like BCA for pretty much the same price.

Personally I think you should get a quality chest rig then get your radio squared away then when you can afford it get a carrier and well tested plates since with most chest rigs nowadays you can just take the harness off and run it as a placard and I’d value having SOMETHING to carry mags and such over having to stuff them in my pockets because I couldn’t afford a JPC and Gucci plates

I've been a LEO for a long time and I still find individual's perspectives interesting. With today's technology and the variety of rifle options, it is my opinion that rifle brands aren't as important as they were 15 years ago. We have come a long way and it is fun to see people running what they like. I have my own prejudices on gear, but those are my opinions and I go out of my way not to tell people their way isn't as good and often try what they are doing to see how it works for me. Periodically I find their way works better for me than my old ways. Sometimes adaptations are good.

Well, it comes down to quality control. Bigger companies have the collateral to ensure higher quality, though shit happens...ask LMT. For the most part, an AR is an AR whether is 6061 or 7075, forged or billet. The chances of you fucking up an AR no matter what it's made out of is slim to none, so that shit doesn't matter. What matter's is precision and quality control.

Like another said, quality actually matters if your goals are "longevity" and "reliability under adverse conditions." If you have different goals, brand is less important. But as someone above said, "machining tolerances" are what's going to drive that reliability and longevity. Along with metallurgy and some tweaks in geometry. But for me, I now try to buy "enough" quality. Such as Colt, BCM, FN, that neighbourhood. So far I really haven't needed more than that.

I do agree that the statement a psa or aero will run just as long as an URGI or KAC is most likely incorrect. These rifles are overbuilt and precision machined to exacting tolerances for a reason. But I'm talking about a baseline build to get people started in defending their homes and communities, not making comparisons to high end builds. It's like comparing Arcteryx to Columbia.

BRAVO-ZULU on the info in the Video and about how some of the snobs like to be A-Holes to others. I am a USN Veteran that has been shooting competition since before joining and during my time in I volunteered for extra training to work harbor security and boarding parties. Because of a flight line accident I ended up in a wheelchair but I used gunsmithing as part of my rehab from 5 spinal cord surgeries. I have build all sort of AR rifles from budget minded ones from rifle kits to all out custom with top end barrels and BCG from the barrel manufacture to make sure there is no headspace issues. I have used Ballistic Advantage and Daniel Defense for my top end builds but I have also used Uppers from Aero to do some of my builds. One of companies that does not get enough good press is Del-Ton who makes Mil-Spec barrels and their kits are very attractively priced specially during the holidays. I have been using the Midwest Industries Free Float Extended Carbine handguard that has been working great on a couple of my carbine builds. I am currently working on a Retro Build that is based on a Del-Ton M4 1/7 twist Chromed lined barrel with a M16 BCG that is Chromed lined internally and is properly staked and it came on a Flat top but it is going to be transplanted to a A2 Upper w/M4 feed ramp, Midwest Extended Carbine Picatinny and A2 Flash Hider, Spike Tactical Lower, Spike LPK, Aluminum CAR15 stock w/6 position tube and LaRue Two Stage Flat Bow trigger. I have 3 other Del-Ton kit builds that have over 15k rounds because they are over 13 years old and I normally do not trust my life with a rifle until I do a 500 round burnout and get the Aimpoint PRO sight in. One of my favorite Del-Ton is the Mid-Length Chrome lined 1/7 twist Heavy Profile is a great shooter out to 400 yards with 1 MOA with Match ammo.

@@woodsghost9088While I was in the NAVY we had Colt Commandos 11.5 inch for the most part and that was a VERY GASSY Carbine specially when going Full Auto but it was fun so now days I do not even notice the gas anymore. I only use 556NATO ammo usually Federal XM193 for the most part for training and I keep 77gr OTM IWI in my home defense ARs except for on which is loaded with Federal 62gr Bonded FBI HRT ammo that is hybrid Soft Point and OTM projectile I pick up 1000 rounds of that ammo a while back and it worked pretty good in both the DD 16, BA 16, Del-Ton 16 Middy, Remington Defense 11.5 and SIG M400 11.5 all of them are 1/7 and all are Chromed Lined except for the BA. The M400 11.5 has been a Night Stand pistol for almost 10 years and it has never let me down in the 5 or 6 courses that I have taken it to but I just wish that it had a MLok instead of Keymod Giselle Handguard and I have been too lazy to swap it since it has been such an accurate upper. I do not use a Suppressor so gas is normally not an issue but I do use the Krinkov Muzzle device with the single baffle which makes 10.5-11.5 AR MUCH MORE Reliable specially when using CRAP AMMO which I do not but it is nice to know that if I ever had to the gun is going to run no matter what. I try to keep nice stock pile of ammo at all time and I am lucky enough to have a VERY UNDERSTANDING Wife that agrees with me in making sure that when ammo is cheap buy as much as possible so when it is Expensive and not easily available I can still go to my gun club and shoot. Back in 2021 into 2022 when ammo was scares I had other members of my club begging me to sell them ammo and some of the offers where pretty crazy but I do not believe is screwing people over so if I had any ammo left over from my shooting I sold it for a few cents over what I paid not a few dollars like some people were doing. I don't know, my $3,200.00 rifle sees as much if not more than my $1K rifles did. But my perspective is, if you spend the money on a more expensive rifle, then it damn well better preform better than a rack grade cheap rifle. I'm satisfied with my TG36 and it's 7,000 plus rounds down the barrel. Granted ammo is the issue these days, but it can eat steel just as well as it eats brass and is combat accurate. I'm not looking for a sub moa gun. I wanted a G36 clone because I wanted it. It's now my primary rifle. But I would never beat up on a guy with an $800 PSA15. I've seen PSA15 kick the living crap out of Noveski rifles. I've built several budget AR's and I've owned an ACR (never should have sold that or my Colt but live and learn). My budget AR's took the abuse I wanted them to and then some. So has my TG36E. It's taken abuse that even with my budget builds I was scared to subject them to. But all of them survived and continued to function. I'm going to do another budget build and then another premium build if Brandonomics doesn't destroy this country first.

The most important parts to consider for a civilian are optics, the barrel, and bcg. You NEED it to be accurate and you NEED it to extract. I've had budget builds in the past that had extraction issues because it wouldn't firmly clamp onto the case. You can train around a shit mil-spec trigger and most everything else (furniture, magazines, etc) is roughly comparable in terms of reliability and function. If you're looking at a budget build then chances are your budget doesn't allow you to consider night vision right now. Get a good light; the Streamlight ProTac HL-X is great, it's dual fuel, and it's 1/3 the price of other names.

I have a “budget” PSA Sabre with nice odd and ends on it and I’m pretty sure it’ll do just as good of a job as a Noveske etc. You do not need to spend 5k on a rifle and whatever to be affective . If you can afford the “high” end stuff then bravo but most of us can’t and we do the best we can. Having something is way better than not having anything at all. New subscriber after this video btw. What issue does it have with .223?
@hoosier_tactics
@hoosier_tactics 6 ай бұрын
@@sectorseven07 it cycles 5.56 totally fine if not perfect. but ... with .223 you have to manually charge it. I've tried, Tula, pmc brass and Winchester/American eagle.223 and basically it's a bolt action. long term it may come out of it, maybe. but guys I've talked to that use Criterion or Rosco barrel middies have no problems. seems to be the gas port size.
@sectorseven07
@sectorseven07 6 ай бұрын
@@hoosier_tactics That doesn't make much sense. That's a large gas port, it should be able to accommodate weaker loads easily. Generally you'll run into that issue with more boutique gas port sizes meant for suppressed use like .067 or below. How rigid is your actual gas block, does it have any play? Have you tried a different buffer weight or spring combination? Is your gas key on your BCG tight or does it wobble?
@hoosier_tactics
@hoosier_tactics 6 ай бұрын
@@sectorseven07 yep checked it all. no gas leakage from the block, no wobble, actually went to a standard carbine buffer to help which helped some, I have a fiber optic cable, and checked barrel, gas port and gas block all lined up perfect. only thing I noticed was my gas block wasn't pinned but my ar pistol isn't either and it works fine. from what I gather it's just the design of the Hanson barrel gas port system. would make a good video to try the different loads. have you tried any .223 yet?

As someone who has 3800 into a rifle, and also built a few PSA rifles with many different branded components, I can honestly say I’m just as happy with my 1000 dollar rifles , I would absolutely trust my life to them and hand them off confidently to a team mate should the need god forbid ever arise. Combat accuracy is easily achievable with “ lower end” military spec stuff, and they just run if you put them together competently. Don’t even hesitate to throw a few together on a budget just do your home work and put the time in. They’ll run and you’ll get hits 👍🏻

I’ve seen some PSA rifles go through some pretty rough torture tests, on the internet. After watching one, i bought a kit from them. It runs pretty decent. Coming from someone who’s main rifles are a super duty and DDM4V7. I also did the same and changed the buffer spring with a sprinco and an H2 buffer and it runs much smoother. I would definitely trust that PSA with my life. Great video bro

@@sectorseven07 by the way, first time catching one of your videos and i subscribed right after. I appreciate the no bullshit, honest content. I think now a days, the market has come so far that even the more budget minded companies are able to turn out decent quality components. I know my PSA kit came with a toolcraft BCG. Which are fairly decent BCGs. So they’re sourcing good parts. If they step up their QC, they’ll really take a hold of the market. I’ve actually been thinking about getting their Jakl and M110 clone. In just wasting for them to work the kinks out of the M110
@sectorseven07
@sectorseven07 6 ай бұрын
Yeah after Cody Curry's video about the 110 I'm definitely in the same spot with waiting for the kinks to be ironed out. At the same time, I had a good performing Aero M5 build with a criterion barrel for awhile that really scratched that full power gas gun itch for me at an affordable price. But I sold it when I came to find that a long range platform has limited utility in the southeast and I wanted to do other things like buy a really expensive ruck. @@Usmc0341

@@austinjones8701 anyone who has a negative opinion on the super duty, has never run one. It’s a very high quality rifle. The bolt is hammer forged 158 carpenter steel. It’s also a great rifle as well, but i think the super duty is a better rifle. Honestly, i think a super duty is every bit as good as a knights.
