the best part about on older car like the Jaguar is the bright and airy cabin. The pillars don't look like doric columns, allowing a good view all around, and the roofline is high enough to make getting in and out a breeze. Compare that to the view from the bunker on the Maserati.

Two years ago I was looking at Series 3 XJ6's, I found a 1986 that was really nice at $25,000 USD. Then I started looking at XJ8s. Massive leap forward in technology, a lighter all aluminum car, much more power from its 4.2L V8, very nice 6-speed automatic. I found a black 2006 VDP with 80,000 miles that had been converted to coil-overs and bought it. It was about half the price of that XJ6, I think it was the right choice.

It’s already on the record that Rawdon Glover, Jaguar’s managing director, has one of the toughest automotive jobs on the planet. His immediate task is to kill off (“sunset”) the current, mostly combustion-engine range of traditional Jaguar models and replace it from 2026 with a radical, three-tier EV line-up that lifts pricing into the realms of Bentley. Speaking to Autocar, Glover - 11 years at Jaguar, with previous Volkswagen Group experience - is undaunted by the size of the challenge. The range will begin with a Porsche Taycan-busting GT - previewed by a concept arriving in December - followed by a Bentley Bentayga-sized SUV and finally a big four-door limo in 2029. RIP William Lyons. RIP Jaguar Cars.

You drove the wrong Quattroporté. Should've went with the 2007 4.2 with ZF automatic gearbox. (Hint: look for blue valve covers, and an actual shifter)
@ashash8940Ай бұрын
Well, in my opinion, the ZF is the “Wrong” one, the QP was originally designed based on a Dry Sump Ferrari based engine with a transaxle sequential gearbox in the back, that was how the QP was designed in the first place. When customers who came from a luxury automatic gearbox car like MB and BMW, etc. they were unfamiliar with the transaxle sequential gearbox, they thought it is just an automatic gear, then they start complaining about how “harsh” the gearbox is! I believe there was a disconnect from both sides, Maserati did not explain enough what the DuoSelect gearbox is, and the fact that is it a mid-engine high rev dry sump transaxle car, and the customer who assumed it is a simple and easy to drive just like any other automatic gearbox cars! For a better sales numbers, Maserati was “forced” to switch to automatic gearbox, they changed the entire configurations, changed the engine to Wet Sump, they put a ZF automatic gearbox in the front instead of the sequential transaxle in the back, the car became a different one, and lost its uniqueness. The performance changed as well DuoSelect 0-100km/h =5.2 sec, ZF= 5.6 sec, DuoSelect top speed =275 km/h, ZF =270, DuoSelect 47%/53% from/rear weight distribution, ZF 49%/51% I have owned many S calss, W140, W220, BMW, etc, and I drove both ZF and DuoSelect QP, I ended up with the DuoSelect, growing up driving a manual transmission since I learned how to drive, the DuoSelect was the “right” one. I remember when I tested drive a ZF QP, the owner told me that his car has the “good” transmission, not the “bad” one! I looked at him and asked, can you explain what do you mean by good and bad transmission? He couldn’t answer… I hope the people who read this understand the whole story. Yes, the DuoSelect is a very complex system and need a costly maintenance and clutch replacement from time to time just like any other Ferrari sequential gearbox, this doesn’t make it a “bad” transmission or less reliable!
@JamesCopeland-i1jАй бұрын
@ashash8940 - 1st gen DuoSelect is trash. End of story. I don't care how it compares in terms of performance numbers, weight distribution, or anything else. The experience is 💩. Had they offered the car with a PROPER sequential gearbox (dog/shuttle shift) it would be a different story. They didn't. It isn't. All that being said, there are upgrades to bring a 1st gen into the modern era of operation... but you're still dealing with the headache of an automated manual transmission, and reduced service life of several costly components. In short, I don't care what you or your numbers say... just like most other people didn't, when Maserati made the wise decision to switch.
@ashash8940Ай бұрын
@@JamesCopeland-i1j We agree to disagree! I don’t care about the performance numbers as well, I just put it there as part of explaining the whole story, dose 5.2 vs 5.6 0-100 make a big difference, absolutely not! We cannot compare apple to orange, DuoSelect and ZF are 2 different cars, it drives different and feels different, there are many available upgrades to make it a smoother shifting, DBW or ECU mapping for examples. It is simple, if you don’t know how to drive the DuoSelect, if you cannot afford the running cost/clutch replacement, or if “you cannot deal with the headache of an automated manual transmission”, then again, it is simple, don’t buy one and go for the ZF! I wonder if you drive the Ferrari 360 or the 430 F1 -It is a similar sequential gearbox-, would you say it is a trash gearbox as well?
@JamesCopeland-i1jАй бұрын
@ashash8940 - you're comparing a 2-place sports car, with a saloon (4dr sedan). Just stop. If the 4dr sedan market wanted the DuoSelect, they wouldn't have bothered to replace it, or even offer an alternative. I don't mind learning to drive again, just to get a few tenths of performance from a sports car... but it's an exercise in abhorrence for a sedan.

The Maserati QP V was built from 2003 until 2012. The model shown here is a pre-2007 model; it still had the very troublesome Cambio corsa-gearbox. In 2007 they switched to a 6 speed ZF-automatic, which is rather reliable.

I'd pick the XJ6 all day, everyday over the Maserati. The XJ6 is arguably THE most beautiful saloon ever built. They are sublime machines, such beautiful lines- from an era when Jaguar actually built beautiful, graceful cars- something they no longer do. I own 3 classic cars- a very interesting Capri which pushes out 290 Bhp and 300 lbs ft of torque- owned for 30 years. A 1972 Rover P6B 3500, and an XK8 with interesting history- 1997 Earls Court Motor Show display car. The P6 is a beautiful machine to drive, with a sybaritic ride quality- only the XJ6 had a slight edge over the P6 in that department. The XJ6 and P6 were the two finest saloons of the 1970's- no doubt about it. Just sitting in the XK8 is deeply satisfying, lashings of walnut- the elliptical Spitfire wing dash, leather seats- it's a special place to be. Contemporary Jags have lost all of that opulence now- which goes some way to explaining why Jaguar is teetering on the brink of collapse. Biggest mistake they ever made? Making the XF- a car that looks like an Audi. VBH and her quip about the backseat............A plethora of 'Carry On' like ribald comments flooded my mind! However, as a Rover P6 and Jaguar driving gentleman, far be from me to be smutty! There again, the Capri does bring out my inner Lewis Collins and he would have been delighted to have VBH on the back seat of his 3.0S Capri.............ROFL :)

I'd be happy with an even smaller XJ. A six cylinder 2.8 litre engine is perfectly adequate. Road-going Jags are not MEANT to be hot hatchbacks. Zero to sixty times are irrelevant. Only the ghastly non-Jag classes care about who's loudest or fastest or quickest round the Nürburgring. An XJ is made for effortless cruising in blissful comfort. My dad had one for years - a 4-speed manual with overdrive - and it was everything you'd want a 'proper' family car to be. Not a track-monster. Not a traffic-light GP w*nk machine. Not a hairy-chested B-road brawler. It was just a Jaaag. Beautiful lines, too. And all that a bellowing 5.3 litre V-12 does is get you to the next petrol station more quickly. Stopping for fuel every hour is sooooo middle-class, daahling... yah?🤭

Odd to pin a geniune classic with a modern classic like that. The reason the XJ was dubbed experimental was due to the way it was constructed. Skulk around the internet long enough, you’ll find the XJ was effectively a four door E-Type. There are actually photos you’ll see of the stretched E-Types, that eventually became the shape we recognize. So this contrasts with the original Mk1 Quattroporte, S-Class, 7-Series and other comparable large cars, because they were built from the ground up as comfy cruisers. The XJ started life as a legitimate sportscar, and became a cruiser. Hence why, when you compare like for like (and model year for model year) the XJ was always the best driving of the big saloons/sedans. It was always the lightest in its class, and drove more like a 3-Series then a big car. And of course, this is nuanced, because naturally in the comparison we see here, the more modern Quattroporte is more dynamic to drive. But compare a similar vintage XJR, and while both are exciting, the Jag is slightly better to drive. The Jag will always be the cooler car. But the Maserati strikes back by being a much more passionate and fiery personality. The Jaguar is more civilized, whereas the Maserati is more enthusiastic. Both of these cars are just the best cars you can enjoy in any circumstance.
