Me and my mates made big mistake of asking for American Budweiser in a bar in Prague. The local bar owner was horrified and really offended.We were early 20s then back in 2004.We thought he really needed to loosen up a bit..It has taken till now aka nearly 50 yrs of age and drinking Budvar from the local supermarket to realise that the gentleman from the wonderful Czech Republic was perfectly justified in being angry towards us. All I can say is this is one of the best lagers around and I now wish that we had ordered the real deal budweiser from its rightful home all those years ago..to make up for it Im going to crack open a six pack on bank holiday Sunday. Cheers Paul !!.

Yeah people from Czechia are very proud of their beer culture. It's nigh on impossible to get crap beer in Czechia. To drink the American version in Czechia or request it would be considered very disrespectful to their beer culture and their country's culture. Czechs drink their own great beer but appreciate good beer from other countries too. It's a pity that that's not the case in England. English beer is as good as anything in the world and their beer culture is unique. Yet most beer drunk in England is pretty abysmal.

Just tried this beer today bought from my local grocery store here in central Texas. Marketed as Chechvar here in the US. Fantastic beer and now one of my favorite beers along with Pilsner Urquell, Alaskan Amber, Paulaner Salvator and Pinkus Alt.

As someone who was born and spent a significant part of my life in Budweis, I have to point out a few things. First, Budweis is a german name of my hometown. In Czech it is called České Budějovice. I guess you understand why the brewery uses the german name on the label. Second, the name Budvar is actually a compound made from words BUDějovický (Budweiser) and pivoVAR (brewery). I absolutely understand that pronouncing such a name can be challenging for English speakers but you know, it's a tradition. Third, speaking of the traditions, Budvar Brewery sticks to using only traditional methods and ingredients in the brewing process. That is the reason for the different taste you mention. Everything ranging from a Czech hops usage to a great local water source makes the unique taste that is so much appreciated in the world! Finally, I am really happy that you enjoyed drinking Budvar. I live in Scotland and although it is possible to get cans of Budvar in almost every big British supermarket, it's nearly impossible to get a drought pint of Budvar in Edinburgh. I'd love to see more pubs to choose serving Budvar as I can say that it's quite popular among British, definitely more than Pilsner Urquell, which is my favourite and it is more hoppy and much more Bitter than Budvar.

Thank you Marek for clearly articulating the history and finesse of this great lager which is often confused with its other namesake. A totally pure, smooth yet delicately complex beer. Can’t understand why it isn’t sold more on draught? Perhaps the contractual and commercial perspectives prevent this.

I just tried this, I'd previously confused it with the US Bud, which I find tasteless! Tesco are doing it for £9 2x six pack or you can combine with a pils Urquell six pack! It's quite sweet, honey and caramel with a tiny amount of malt, you have to really hunt for the hops at the end! The Urquell has the same start but is more hoppy at the back end. Both of them are very good pils/lager! I'd also add they are not at all acidic, many mass produced Lagers give me acid reflux, these don't!

This tastes fantastic in Prague in a " tank " pub , these are pubs that brew there own beer on site and literally the beer is served straight from cellar to beer tap , this and pilsner urquell in a local tank pub , can be as good as any beer I have tasted , and often still easy to find around the £1 a pint mark .. great review 👍👍

Hi Paul! Recently came across your channel and I cant get enough of it! I really like the way you describe beers it gives me a better insight to what I want to try! Do to lockdown and the pubs being closed you do begin to miss a pint! Also during lockdown I’ve tried to taste different beers because I’ve been getting fed up of the same taste. My favourite beers are Czech and German. I recently tried one called “Kellerbier” which had a phenomenal taste. Anyway I was delighted you did a review on this as this is one of my favourite beers on the market. Here are my top 5 favourite beers... 5. Paulaner 4. Hop house 3. Miller genuine draft 2. Bud var (I went to the Czech Republic 2 years ago, this on draft was unreal!) 1. Weihenstephaner hefe weissbier Cheers mate! 🍻

I bought a 6 pack of Budvar 330ml cans in asda a few weeks ago for £6. Lovely stuff. A couple of years ago i was working in the Isle of Mann and the pub up the road from my hotel had another Czech beer called Staropromen on tap and it was fantastic stuff. I bought some bottled from Tesco when i got back home but just was not as nice but still decent stuff.

Just a question on the side about a few things that bother me, but have nothing to do with this particular beer. I worked in the Heineken breweries in Zoeterwoude in the Netherlands in the eighties. In those days, Heineken used mais or corn instead of barley. I was told that was because of economics. I don't know if Heineken still uses mais instead of barley, but is mais/corn a worse ingredient than barley for a good quality lager beer? Most pilsner beers state the following ingredients on their labels: malt, water, hops and yeast. However, sometimes they also mention sugar. What does that mean? Are those beers that mention sugar lesser quality beers?

Budvar in largely unknown in the sense people don't know how good it is. , but a amazing quality beer. This is from their own website😁 < Fresh soft water is essential for brewing great lager. And no brewery in the world has a source as pristine and perfect as ours. Drawn from an Ice Age aquifer 300m underneath our brewery in České Budějovice, our water is absolutely pure and dates from a time before pollution or agriculture. Unlike other breweries, our natural water doesn’t need chlorinating or softening before brewing; it rises from our artesian wells clean, clear and ready for brewing.

Adolfus Busch a German immigrant to the United States decided to name his beer after the German town of Budweis in the German empire the first Reich. Now this town sits in the Czech Republic. Budweiser was patented in the United States before Budvar was in Europe. That’s why this ongoing 100 year lawsuit ruled in favor of Budweiser in America. Anheiser Busch owns the rights to the name. Czechvar as it’s called in the United States named their beer Budweiser without doing their research on who owns the name. I hope this clarifies the on going battle of the Budweisers.
@KORZOkokod Жыл бұрын
it's not named after german town of Budweis, it's named after czech town České Budějovice (Budweis is german name for Budějovice) Busch allegedly decided to brew and sell Budweiser in US after visiting Budějovice and tasting local beer. Budweiser can be translated as "from/of Budweis" . Beer in Budějovice is brewed for more than 700 years it's called Budweiser for most of the time, that's why AB lost in most countries of Europe
@northamericanproductions Жыл бұрын
@KORZOkokod It was a German town because it sat in the German empire. Same thing with pilsner urquell. The beer was created during the German empire. There was no Czech Republic during that time and they hired a master German brewer to develop the original recipe for the first pilsner. Thus pilsner urquell is a German beer.
