I never tire of watching this video. I had the pleasure of seeing them (one group anyway) at TX State Fair at the barn....great names for them Bob, Dan, Joe, Tom, Jim, Don, Ben and Ace. Gentle giants surrounded by first class handlers with plenty of TLC.

The Friesian horse was developed in Holland (what became the Netherlands) The Friesian horse is the national horse of the Netherlands. All of the large (heavy) draft (pulling/work) horse breeds are descended from the horses that the Medieval knights rode into battle. Over the centuries each European country developed its own large horse breeds that became draft horses after the era of the mounted knights had passed. These animals were also mixed with other breeds to produce carriage, coach and cavalry horses.

I lost my Dad 7 weeks ago, at age 92. He retired from Budweiser in 1987. I recently played this for him and I was fighting the tears as he sat here watching with me then. I can't fight them anymore.

You should plan a visit to Grants farm in St. Louis where they keep the Clydesdales- you can see them up close-you would love it.

That wagon weighs close to 4 tons. The biggest horses are closest to the wagon because they do the most pulling. The smallest ones are at the front of the hitch. Each one of their collars costs $80,000 to make - the finest leather and brass -sewn together with silk thread. Then their tac costs about another $80,000. They each drink 30 gallons of water a day. My friend used to drive one of their big rigs that transport them. They truly ARE 'gentle giants'. They have 3 teams that travel parts of the country - East, West and Mid. They travel with 10 horses but only use 8 on the wagon. You wouldn't believe the amount of food they eat in one day. They have to maintain a certain weight or they can't be on the team. They are extremely pampered and very well taken care of. You can own one of them for $5,000.
