Professor Organic Chemistry Tutor, thank you for an exceptional explanation on how to calculate the pH of a buffer solution using the classical Henderson Hasselbalch equation in AP/General Chemistry. Buffers are widely used in both chemistry and biology to maintain constant PH. Many natural systems are also buffered. A buffer has a limited capacity to absorb H+ or OH- Ions. A buffer also has its greatest capacity when the concentrations of weak acid and conjugate base are equal. Hence, to make a buffer, we can choose a weak acid whose Ka is close to the [H+ ] we want. This is an error free video/lecture on KZbin TV with the Organic Chemistry Tutor.

guys i found a secret if you are given the PKb then just use this equation POH=PKb+log(Acid/Base) then ifAcid is bigger then base it's positive and if base is larger it's negitive
I think whats especially confusing is the Ka value is supposed to describe the disassociation of the ions, which is supposed to dictate the concentration of reactants/products, so its weird to understand how the concentrations of Acid vs Conj base can be equal
@shafiurrahaman33963 ай бұрын
I’m having trouble understanding this. When he says that the pKa is 6 therefore pH is 6 when log[A-/HA] = 0 i can understand the math, but can’t reconcile in my head how the acid and base don’t effectively just cancel to make the solution neutral 7. My counter thought is that perhaps the pH is actually 7 at the moment A- = HA but since the pKa = 6 it will eventually settle at pH = 6, but by that logic the pH will always = 6 if you give the reaction enough time so I think this is a flawed idea where I’m just describing pKa. I would appreciate to hear an explanation of what I’m missing here

why do u add the Na😭😭😭
@chioma37257 ай бұрын
Because Na will dissolve and seperate from the other ion (ex: NAF -> Na + F). Itll be a spectator ion and basically irrelevant for now. (When something with Na is put in water(aq), for example NaF again, you'll be left with Na ion and F ion, but in the video we only care about the F ion (Now by itself) because its the conjugate base we wanted to add. Basically, its an easy way to add our conjugate. I hope this makes sense! 😂
