Good linguistics from Angel (aka Joss Whedon) there. Buffy says she wants her life to be with him. He says he doesn't. Accurate translation; Angel does not say he doesn't want his life to be with Buffy. He says he doesn't want Buffy's life to be with him. Now suffer another heartbreak at the hands of this show.

Ihis episode is one of my favorite. It has everything you need: Heartbreak, Prom, Buffy and Angel slow dancing, and a great song at the end. Which in the end leaves you in tears.😢

Well to be honest Joyce and even Angel are not wrong. This whole fantasy land crush stuff is cute and all but Buffy has to grow up. If she is to actually chase after the normal life she says she wants, she has to have more to life than just killing demons as this episode shows via contrast of prom and her, well, killing demons. And Angel does not fit into that. Even if we ignore things like the centuries big age gap between them, Angel has a lot of baggage and has caused a lot of bad things to a lot of people - including Buffy's friends who will most likely never accept him. They had a nice childhood romance going but it is absolutely not healthy and neither of them can truly grow with the other present. Its a romance out of fairytales, which is why exactly it has to stay in fairytales. Sometimes the fabled first love is just not enough. There's too much toxic history, too much sacrifice and pain and truly all that Angel and Buffy did by being together was hurt each other unintentionally. Angel and Buffy were tied to each other by prophecies and all that stuff and until they actually can break that tie, neither of them can truly grow into their own.

Of course Buffy might not even want a normal life, she might be just chasing the opposite of faith in order to deny that she actually feels at home with her job and just like Faith has dark sides and flaws. But she would never be able to discover herself with Angel present, because self discovery comes with adolescence, and she can never grow up if she clings to this relationship. You cant stop playing an infallible hero out of fairytales unless you actually let the princess go and look at yourself. And the longer you play the fairytale, the longer you keep your portrait of dorian gray covered, the more you get hurt by eventually seeing it.

+havok6280 the difference is that Buffy and Spike NEVER was a "fairytale romance". It was more "real" and "adult" thing with all of its flaws and dark sides, which means that it is something that can grow and change. And Spike is absolutely a better foil to Buffy than Angel was. Spike was literally Buffy's reflection both in personality and flaws. If Buffy and Angel was is about sacrifice and stagnation, Buffy and Spike is about change(in both negative and positive ways). Despite pitfalls and mistakes and all the horrifying things, Spuffy is all about becoming a better person and acknowledging and overcoming your past mistakes.

Buffy and Spike's relationship is not limited to the period where they both were self loathing self-destructive assholes intent on hurting themselves and each other you know. *Spoilers for S6 and S7* Its the best example of difference between a mature relationship and a childhood roamnce - Spuffy tragedies and mistakes made them stronger, Bangel tragedies and sacrifices tore them apart. Growing past what happened shows maturity and strength. Both Spike and Buffy inspired each other to be better than they were and resolved their issues like adults becoming better people both. And Buffy does not want a normal life. She is not ready to admit it yet in S3 but she likes what she does. If anything she is incapable of living "normal" life social expectations would force her to. The thing is - as long as Angel was there she would never be able to realize what she wants to do or does not want to do. She would cling to childhood fairytales and superhero fantasy she had going for her. Angel leaving is fundamental for her to be able to see reality and to face her own flaws and humanity. To shed away the fake superhero delusion, to face herself and to eventually rise back into her own person - one that is not in denial of her own flaws, which is highlighted in S7 with how a lot of Buffy's moments and ideology is almost Faith-like, while still retaining the core values and beliefs that make up Buffy.

Certainly not excusing it, but Spike's rape attempt was before he had a soul. So, if you're making a comparison, it would be more accurate to compare his behavior to that of Angelus, rather than to Angel. As similar as they try to make Spike and Angel seem, there is a very key difference. When Angel went full Vamp, he basically gave himself over completely to the demon inside of him, with the human part simply informing the way in which those demonic tendencies expressed themselves. With Spike, the opposite is true. Spike remained surprisingly human, with all of the joys, desires, and animosities that entails. Angel's first act on becoming Angelus was to murder his disapproving father and the rest of his family. Spike's first act was to turn his mother so that she wouldn't die. He ended up having to put her down after she came back all sorts of Freudian wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that he was motivated by the desire to be with people he cared about. He even put up with way too much of Dru's BS because he wanted the romance that had been denied him in life. Or, as Spike himself said, "I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." The demon part basically had to settle for twisting those human traits into something dark. Oh, and there's the fact that there was enough humanity left in Spike that the realization of what he had just tried to do to Buffy sent him down the path that led to him earning his soul back...after many excruciatingly painful and life threatening trials, of course.

I wouldn't personally blame Joyce. Angel was coming to the decision on his own regardless, though Joyce and the Mayor helped him I guess. After Amends, Angel slowly realised he had a bigger purpose *cough* Angel the spin-off was greenlit at the end of season 2 of Buffy *cough* 😂 just like Buffy always had a bigger purpose. If they were both just regular humans, they'd work, but alas their separate destinies always get in the way. Doesn't mean they're not soulmates though ✌️🏻

Don't blame Joyce, she waited 3 years to say something about her daughter's relationship with Angel, and it's not like she said anything Angel hadn't been thinking himself for a while. Hey Alex the mind reading episode, I don't know if when you saw it you remembered Torchwood. I was never a big fan of Torchwood, my apologies, but I remember in the first season there was a mind reading episode that lifted a bit from the Buffy episode, especially where Buffy & Angel were on the couch opposed to Jack & someone I think on a bench or something.

Hello, new to your channel! I've seen some of your GOT reactions in the past and then looked up to see if anyone had Buffy/Angel reactions and was happy to see you are doing it. Are you going to be watching Angel as well? If so, you may want to watch them together as there are some crossovers (the Buffy episode 1 first, then Angel episode 1 and so on....until you get to season 6 Buffy and then the crossovers don't match episode by episode since Buffy moved to a different network from Angel after season 5).

"do we blame Joyce here" No because Joyce was just saying what everyone else was thinking but didn't want to admit. Buffy and Angel cant be together. How do you be with someone you love this strongly and never get physically intimate knowing that could turn him evil? That curse is still in affect. Also his dream of walking out into the sun with Buffy and its her burning up is Angel's fear that he's just gonna make things worse for her by staying. Its heartbreaking and it sucks but Angel is right. He needs to leave and find his redemption and he's not gonna do it hanging around Sunnydale pining over something he can never have.

One of the things I love about Buffy is that its far more realistic.I never got in to Twilight.- In Buffy the vampire -Angel really does love her-wants the best FOR HER. In Twilight the creepy vampire want to own his lover. He drags her in this world-that aint love.
