I’ll never understand the hate season 1 gets from fans. Like yeah it’s low budget but because of that they got really creative with the story telling. It’s really good at plot twists, making you think you know what’s coming. I love old school horror and season 1 really resembles that. Plus you get the comedy, action, romance and drama aspects as well. It really set the tone for the whole show. It’s why they got picked up for another season. The only episodes I don’t care for are the 2 part pilot and Never Kill a Boy on the First Date and even then I still find myself quoting them.

I just wanted to say, physical sports are like physical. So even though Amy's Mum has the knowledge of what to do to be good, Amy's body isn't conditioned to do it. As she says "I just can't make my body move like hers" I love how much you're loving this show. And can't wait until you get to season 2 when it REALLY kicks off

OH, I'm so glad you're continuing on with the whole series, and you're sure to avoid the travesty that is the HD remaster. This show saved my life as a little gay boy growing up in a cornfield town in middle America. My adolesence began when this show first aired, and it really shaped me as a person! SOOO MANY tv troupes that we take for granted today were invented by BtVS. I'm 37 now, and still watch the show to this day. It will become one of your favorite shows of all time, and is continually listed as one of the best 50 TV shows of all time by TV Guide. I've watched A LOT of Buffy reactors to relive the joy of the show. You're analyzing the show very well already - I can tell you're going to be a fun Buffy reactor! You'll be AMAZED by the things that are going to happen on this show, supernatural and otherwise, it's a hell of a ride for 7 seasons. Truly great television, I was older than the target demo back in 1997 (I was already 30) but I was hooked from that first episode twist where the obvious victim- the schoolgirl- turns out to be the vamp. I've been to conventions to meet the actors, I've visited the locations from the first and second seasons; I've been a real Buffy nerd for over 25 years 👍 I hope you love it half as much as I do!

I’m Gen X was in my 20s when it first aired in 97 here in England,I’m sure it was on BBC 2 evening once a week…I still have old VHS tapes of Buffy i recorded of TV at the time still In my house from then. Witch is my favorite of these early monster of the week episodes. The twist is great, and the ending is so satisfying. Catherine gets exactly what she wanted: to relive her glory days of high school cheerleading, forever!

Introducing: Xander - the Monster Magnet! 😂 It was special to watch it when it aired, not just because it was a great and unique show, also because I was only one year younger than the characters back then and could perfectly identify with their teenage problems. Going on that journey now with younger generations and reliving the best moments with reactors is a great way to celebrate the 90s nostalgia. One of the best decades for TV (X-Files, Stargate, Buffy, Charmed, Friends, Will&Grace...)!

“The Witch” is one of those okay-ish episodes that weirdly gets called back on frequently throughout the series. That’s the thing about season 1. Even though so many episodes are meh or worse, many of the episodes establish future rules, characterizations or are referenced later on.

Yeah, I do like the Witch episode. The other one? Oh well, it's ok, I guess. The nice thing is that the main cast is quite enjoyable (IMHO), so even if an episode doesn't have that great a story, it can still be fun(ish), thanks to the cast interactions.

Some of the 90s lingo is actually made up by Joss. And my friends and I still use them. Almost every band that plays the Bronze is a real band, most are local unsigned bands, but a few bigger names. I became friends with a few. As for The Witch, you were blown away by the body switch reveal, though earlier, you called it. "What if it's actually the mom?" One and only one spoiler: the eggs hatching at the end is just a tease.

The use of shadows during Buffy's battle with the mantis wasn't just a cool visual choice. At this point in its history the show had a tiny budget and the mantis costume was on loan from Babylon 5, so they had to return it in one piece; shadows meant there were no shots of anything that might damage the costume.

Episodes have names. This one is called “Witch”, which kinda answer the question “does she also do witches”. I'd imagine cheerleading isn't just about a mindset, it depends on body too. Mom is in her body, but that doesn't mean the body can move like she wants it to. I'm not into modern music, but I've heard quite a few bands first got popular by appearing on Buffy. IIRC, at this point writers didn't know what's Angel's deal. They did figure it out eventually. The Mantis doll was borrowed, and they had to return it undamaged. Which is why they did shadow theater.

You were questioning why "Amy" wasn't a better cheerleader when her mother was using her body. I think it was because she hadn't switched yet until later in the episode.

Yes, they cut from Amy to her mother doing spells on the other cheerleaders early on, so they haven't switched yet.

The bit I remember from this episode Witch is where Buffy and Joyce are talking in the kitchen and Buffy refers to Joyce having 'Farah Hair' was a reference to Farah Fawcett Majors who was in the original Charlie's Angels, and was one of the most famous women of the 70's, every woman that time wanted the 'Farah Flick'. Witch was one of the better episodes of Series 1. Although S1 was a bit rough due to low budget and show finding its feet, it lays the groundwork for the upcoming episodes. Once this show reaches mid S2 it really picks up in every way, and produces some of the best TV drama ever written. In this episode the metaphor here is the 'pushy parent' who forces their child to things and is annoyed with them when they don't excel. The ultimate pushy parent, Amy's mum criticising her child and forcing her to do things she may not be able to do, then taking over her body. A decent little episode for early on in the show with a chilling ending with Amy's mum encased in the cheerleader statuette trophy.

The key to why the mom isn't as good in Amy's body is the quote: "I can't get my body to move like hers" Amy just wasn't as naturally athletic as her mom was in high school.

Season 1 was a mid season replacement and they wanted it aimed at teen boys do it was very monster of the week. But once they knew they had a full season 2 , season 2 is a GAMECHANGER.

As far as why Katherine isn't a good cheerleader in Amy's body is bc Amy doesn't have the muscles that Katherine would have had. Plus, we are meant to fit into our body, the vessel we were born in, so if our souls become displaced into another spirit's vessel, ie, someone else's body, it would be like trying to walk in shoes 5 sizes too big or too small.

Passion of the Nerd has a video (only watch when you're done, cos spoilers) that explains the 'tragedy of the Buffy remaster'. They basically completely messed it up. Completely. They destroyed a lot of the visual storytelling for a start. Think like a bad AI version of a remaster. I watched it when it first aired (in the UK), and have the original, pre-remaster, DVD release, which I will not be giving up for anything! Season 1 has it's duds. It's on a low budget, and still climbing out from the shadow of the movie. It definitely gets better.

Buffy was the first alternate that replaced Cordelia and Amy was the second.

S1 as is always mentioned is weak due to its low budget, but it gets us to really know and love the characters, and 'the monster of the week' type format is evident throughout most of it. However, again it does provide an analysis of social comment, this time how the experienced and mature adults can take advantage of the innocent and weak younger people. This time in the form of a mature female teacher who is being drooled over by all the teenage boys, and is using them for evil purposes.

Take comfort in the fact that episode 4 is considered by many to be the worst in the series, although there are a couple more in contention. But for the most part, it’s all uphill from here!
