Re: bad eggs, yes on first viewing it seems a little odd to say the least, but when you rewatch and realise that this episode comes right before Buffy sleeps with Angel, suddenly the ‘sex has consequences’ lectures that the teachers were doing makes more sense. But yes, not one of my favourites either despite the tie in to the bigger plot

Alley box is probably the best cause her reactions are so genuine and often hilarious, in a good way. Liam Duke is good cause he usually analyzes the themes of the episode in his discussion. The Normies are fun but can talk way too much and they do miss certain important parts at times and are quite forgetful of important plot points. TheLexiCrowd is quite genuine and seems to always remember every plotpoint and often hlarious especially her intro clips to each reaction on youtube. SoFieReacts is great, she really shines when she catches on to plotlines before they happen and reads between the lines very well.

I always look forward to TheLexiCrowd’s openings. Passion of the Nerd isn’t a reactor but does video essays on episodes, they can often hint at the future though.

I think all I would’ve done differently is split Angel and Angelus into two, and have Angel in the character list and Angelus in the villains list, as he is essentially the main villain of Season 2 and would love to know more about your thoughts on him as a villain.

I think your rankings all make really good sense, and you explain them very well. The places I found myself disagreeing I think are informed by future knowledge, which can be hard to divorce yourself from. For reactors, all the YT channels I like have been mentioned a ton, but I was surprised to see no one mention the podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer, which has become an essential part of my experience of the fandom. They do a really good job of being spoiler free, for the most part. Their one major slip up (which they edited out anyway) was Jenny's death, which you're already past.

Your experience with Episode 2x19, "I Only Have Eyes For You," is very much in line with how I recall fans reacted to it during the original run. It wasn't much talked about or highly ranked at first, but once the show went into syndicated reruns (after Season 5 was completed) and we all got to watch it again, it began to be discussed and called the Most Underrated episode.

I love how much you love Buffy, Giles, Spike and Oz! They're probably my top 4 as well for the characters that have appeared so far. Like for season 1, I really enjoyed you ranking the episodes and characters, it's really fun to hear your takes. I think Buffy as a show is hugely rewatchable so like you said, you might like episodes more or less on a rewatch depending on what happens in future episodes. I'm so excited for season 3! Season 2 introduced my favourite characters in Spike and Dru, but Season 3 is gonna introduce another of my favourites and I can't wait for you to get to see them 😊 I do think it's interesting that you're able to connect more with Ford than Impada, because they're both kinda similar. They were both dealt a shit hand in life, and both do whatever they must in order to have a future, even if that means murder... but I also think it's fair to judge them differently because of the extenuating circumstances. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I LOVE how much you dig into the episodes and get really invested in this great series. Keep up the great work!

Season 2 was a MAJOR upgrade over Season1, but that was largely due to a contract that 1) provided more episodes, and 2) provided a larger budget. Like others, I am looking forward to your reactions to S3, as E1 is one of my favorites. As the seasons go forward, some of the themes actually seem to become more oriented to mature audiences. That is, Buffy began as an adolescent and is moving toward adulthood. Great series, great reactions! Probably the godfather of Buffy analysis (NOT reaction) is Passion of the Nerd, but he is not a reactor, but rather a fellow that provides insight into each episode and often how it fits in within the entire series. If you only watch the early episodes, he tries not to spoil, but the farther you get into it, the more you need to beware spoilers. He also has a wonderful calming voice. Alleybox is not yet compete with the series, and we got to go through it as she went from dating to married. Domie has always had good reactions. My current favorite (present company excluded, of course,) is Jules Reacts. There are a lot of other reactors that have completed the series, and like my children, I cannot pick favorites, but I will leave that for your other commenters.

Nice video. It's fun watching someone getting excited for watching Buffy for the very first time. I've been re-watching the show for so many years and it's my favorite show of all time. So getting to see someone else find joy in watching the show and ranking the episodes to their personal preference is a lot of fun! I don't necessarily agree with all of your rankings, but as you say that is to be expected. A first time watcher feels differently about certain episodes compared to someone who has seen the entire show multiple times. I am sure you will be revising your list down the line once you finish the series and if you decide to watch the show a second time, which I'm sure you will because it's so great. I usually re-watch the entire show every year or two along with the spinoff Angel, which is not as good as Buffy but it's still part of the same universe so it's still a lot of fun to watch. Enjoy season 3! Most fans rank season 2 and 3 as their favorites and they are definitely my favorite too!

If you're wanting a refresher of season 1 and 2 episodes, I HIGHLY suggest looking up Passion of the Nerd's KZbin channel. He actually does Buffy breakdown/episode analysis essay type videos. It's sorta hard to explain but they feel like a lot of in depth work goes into them (although they're 4-10 minutes long). Ian, the person who does them (and comes across as very nice), cites a lot of Buffy academic books that have been used in college courses. But yeah, Ian's voice is also uh-mazing. I'm jealous. Lol. It sounds really smooth to me. Anyways, he's been doing these Buffy videos for a long time, I want to say at least 9 years, and he is still doing them (currently midway through season 5). The videos are very enjoyable and succinct, so they aren't as long as Buffy episodes. Anyways, hopefully you find some enjoyment from their channel if you check it out.

Cass' complete S2 episode rankings are visible around 29:27 [Character rankings at 50:11.] Compared to IMDB ratings, Cass has the following differences: The Dark Age (2x8), What's My Line (2x9-2x10) and I Only Have Eyes For You (2x19) are ranked notably higher, while Halloween (2x6), Innocence (2x14), and BB&B (2x16) are ranked notably lower. (The remaining changes move by 3 spots or less.) Most strikingly, The Dark Age is usually ranked above 7 other episodes; cass ranks it above 13 other episodes (out of 22). From the usual 'bottom third divider' position it went to the 'top third divider'. That's quite a big jump. Ranking Innocence (2x14) as mid-tier (below 10 episodes, above 11 episodes) is notably lower, it's in the IMDB-voters' top 3. BB&B also makes a big jump down. If Cass were to swap BB&B and The Dark Age, Cass' bottom 8 would be the same as IMDB's bottom 8 in _basically_ the same order (only 2x2 and 2x18 would need to swap). Like the herd's group think, Cass appears to prefer the Spike/Drusilla/Angelus arc over the monster-of-the-week episodes. [My 'higher' episodes are Lie To Me (2x7), Phases (2x15) and IOHEFY (2x19), while my 'lower' episodes are School Hard (2x3), Halloween (2x6) and BB&B (2x16). I like all my 'lower' episodes, even love them, I just prefer a larger number of other episodes over them than most people.]

Interesting how the episode rankings are top heavy, the two lowest categories are completely empty. Character and villain rankings on the other hand look like normal distributions. Could this imply that characters and villains are compared to eachother within both categories, whereas episodes are given a ranking score based on individual merit as an episode, not relative to eachother? Since the episodes are ranked within each score, we could use this order to construct a normal distribution of this ranking, spanning all the scores, even the two lowest omitted categories. This would assume that the distance in assessed quality within a score (rows) is the same as the distance between adjacent scores (last in a row to next colums first). I don't think that is the case. If we only could figure out the relative difference of these two distances..

Love your reactions and appreciate you taking the time to put together these tier lists. A few quick comments about them: 1) Sad to see my two favorite characters, Xander and Cordelia, get shuffled off into the "Had Potential" tier when all of the other main characters get into the S tier. I get that everybody has their own favorites. I just hope you're not letting yourself get influenced by a few extremely vocal Xander haters. 2) I don't know who told you that you have to call the big blue guy "Judge" instead of "The Judge", but whoever did is mistaken. Both Angel and Giles refer to him as The Judge. 3) And finally, am I crazy or did you not include the season's primary villain (Angelus) on your villain tier list? You did say you preferred him to regular Angel, but where would you rank him on your tier list?

I know buffy fan 8 will have some channel recommendations, I see a 1x1 from a new channel and within like 4 hours they're already getting hype in the comments haha. I think The Lexi Crowd, Alley Box, Sofie, and Dakara are really good (domi e is good too but, as her disclaimer states, she's seen later episodes so may inadvertently spoil stuff). For some guys you have Liam (Duke), Liam (Catterson), Nick Reacts (previously Thor Reacts, and he tends to do collabs!), and Haarute. One soft spot for me is Shan (After Show Reacts) since it was the first one I saw, and The Normies (a huge reaction channel) are group-style reaction channel which is an environment that makes the cheesy "fun" episodes extra fun imo.

Thank you for this! I agreed with most of your lists. The only one I might bump a single tier higher was Inca Mummy Girl/Ampata. I just empathized with her character a bit more I think, because she was basically sacrificed at around the same age as Buffy for some 'chosen one' destiny that she never wanted. Basically Buffy's story if she didn't end up being brought back immediately during Season 1. She just wanted to live the life that she never got to, which I think reflects Buffy's character in a lot of ways. The tragic part is that she was constantly on borrowed time, and she had to keep siphoning life in order to keep herself tethered to the realm of the living. So yeah, because of that I would say the character/episode "had potential".

I feel like Angel and Angelus should have been ranked as two characters because even though they are played by the same actor they are completely different. They both bring different things to the season. I feel like Angel should have been ranked as a character and Angelus as a villain.

The show wasn't romanticizing James and Grace's relationship, it was drawing a parallel between this problematic relationship and Buffy and Angel's relationship. The metaphor is not only about Buffy identifying with James because she thinks she's responsible for Angel's "death", it's also about showing us that if you're a young person that's been manipulated or seduced by an adult, you need to forgive yourself because you're not the one responsible for whatever repercussions these relationships will have on you or your abuser.

I think the only thing I strongly disagree with is Spike being more "complex" than Ford. I think it's important to remember how Ford was in excruciating pain and needing to medicate himself basically all the time because of the headaches. He doesn't wanna die, but he doesn't wanna keep living either. I think that's the part that makes me sort of "understand" how far he was willing to go. It was such an impossible situation. As for Spike, I don't know. I don't see what's so complex about him, but I'll agree he was a good character and a real fun villain to watch.

I give every Buffy reactor a try...even those that are long done (at least the big or favorite episodes as time is limited). What will set them apart is personality (any type, be yourself...looking for fun and introspectiveness) and a good discussion/analysis at some point. Needless to say, I usually watch the majority of them and sometimes subscribe to the ones I don't want to miss.

Basically, the 12 episodes that feature Spike and Drusilla are all considered classics, and the 10 that don't are not. You have 11 Spike & Dru episodes in the S-tier and one in the A-tier. Your S-tier also includes 'The Dark Age', which is definitely one of the best non-Spike episodes. So your tier list is quite close to the general taste.

His videos are really good but he moves at the pace of a snail in making new videos. He's been on Buffy season 5 for four years! Same with Angel season 2! At this point he's only completing 4 or 5 videos per year for each show and it's ridiculous. I've totally lost interest in his channel because of his extremely slow pace. Also many of his videos are way too long when they don't need to be, which in turn makes it harder to make and contributes to his slow pace. He also tends to insert too much of his personal drama into videos, like "The Body" for instance, instead of sticking to the episode he talks all about his own life and family. Of course that is important to him, but not to Buffy fans who just want to talk about the episode.

Just be careful with other reactors putting spoilers in the thumbnails/titles. Darcie’s Not Here is probably the closest to you as far as reacting goes so she should be safe

Passion of the Nerd is sorta a react/review channel. He is passionate in his reviews and gives you a different perspective. I watched the show when it came out - Ford and “Lie To Me” is the episode that I knew I was hooked on Buffy.

I agree almost completely with your ranking but to bad eggs is way bell Inca mummy girl- at least impada had some back story and motive as a villain- plus she drew parallels with buffy as the ‘chosen one’ which created empathy. (Plus as you said inca mummy girl introduces oz)

Interesting. I like Bad Eggs. It's an interesting take Ron invasion of the bodysnatchers. I put Inca Mummy Girl as one of the worse of the entire show up there with Go Fish.

That’s very true perhaps because I haven’t seen invasion of body snatches it didn’t hit me the same way- don’t get me wrong these three are my bottom three episodes so it’s dissecting why or why not I like them to me in a lnca mum girl is bad plus has a heap of problematic racist undertones (joss loves to make POC characters Villians or kill them off- Kendra is another example) but I do find it has some more interesting elelements relating back to the main plot and sacrifices that our ‘chosen girl’ has to make. I don’t enjoy go fish but do love the scene of cordy being supportive of xander even though he is a fish lol. For me there are not any snippets I enjoy from bad eggs! But I understand we are all different! I’m glad you get something out of the episode!

I try to watch every Buffy reactor most are really good,Marry me list no1 is you :) or dakara jayne she is awesome sofie reacts, jules and lexi .i never really got in to I only have eyes for you episode and wouldnt have rated it as high,Willy the barman needs moving up i really liked his role in series 2 but agree with just about everything else.Come on series 3 cant wait

I think there are too many reactions of "Buffy" on youtube to mention them all. But I think you can definitely try: - After Show Reacts, because she was one of the first reactors to this show. - Jabberwocky, because she is one of the few reactors who is behind you with the episodes (right now at the beginning of season two). So it might be fun for you to be ahead of at least one of the reactors. - The Normies, because Group reactions are fun. Even if they don't get to deep in most of the episodes/stories. And Xander is unpredictable? Of course he is. He is a male teenager 😉
