I think Buffy's main point about the costumes was that Halloween is a great excuse to break out of your shell, be someone you're usually not, and do it without repercussions. I'd say that's a valid and positive approach. Of course they all have their insecurities - but Buffy doesn't just want to please Angel, so also wants so be a girly girl for one night. Not a fighter, not on a mission, not a working woman. Just a very feminine girl. The costume represents some kind of freedom to her. She doesn't want to change for Angel or anyone, but it would be so nice to be somebody else for just one night. The episode is very much about insecurity and gender roles (after all, they're 17), but I don't see a huge problem in the approach. It's Halloween. It's costumes. It's supposed to be fun.

Though someone already addressed this without context, "fast" means going from just meeting someone to sexual activity quickly. There was a construct for high school girls that your reputation wouldn't be harmed if you dated a guy a long time before having sex, "taking it slow" in essence. Therefore, being considered fast meant you had a stained reputation.

I was a teen in the late 90s/early 00s, and we knew about the possibility of getting roofied, but it definitely wasn't something we were educated to be on-guard against. It was like something that happened to other people, but not something that you believed could ever happen to you. So much so that when my friends and I actually got roofied in 2003, I didn't even realize it. I remember thinking how weird it was that all three of us had blacked out, and also how weird it was that I blacked out so hard and so suddenly after only a couple of drinks, but I didn't know enough to think that we'd probably been drugged. It wasn't until I was thinking back on it years later that I realized what had happened. People didn't speak as openly about that kind of stuff back then, and there was still a lot of stigma and victim blaming going on. Glad things are better now.

Similar experience here in the early 90s when it was even less known. Not something that made me black out but something that made me feel very uninhibited and 'blurry' that was definitely taken advantage of. There is a great foreshadowing in "Reptile Boy" for what we learn about Giles in Halloween. When our rescue party storms the frat house, Giles checks some door, and one of the bros attacks him from behind. And Giles immediately knocks him off with a kind of unconcerned backhand punch. It's very easy to miss, but it is an early indication that Giles can be badass when necessary. In fact, they originally planned that kind of foreshadowing in as early as episode 3 of season 1, "Witch". In the original script the science room does have everything they need, but the cabinet is locked, so, Giles just calmly punches through the glass door. They decided it would be too early.

The actress who plays Drusilla, Juliet Landau is the daughter of Martin Landau and Barbara Bain who appeared together in the series 'Space: 1999'. She greatly resembles her mother when she was that age. 4:24 It's quite unusual for Cordelia to get the better of Xander in one of their insult matches the way she does there. 17:23 Willow's usually so easy-going it's great to see her losing her temper for change! 'Angel' series one runs concurrently with season four of 'Buffy' and two with five and so on. 31:33 Those sinks are very strongly fixed to the wall, I'd never sit on a sink without some more support than just pipes underneath. 33:16 'Free candy?' 14:51 Based on my memory and internet research, Rohypnol was the first modern date-rape drug. I couldn't find much info on the onset of its abuse in this way, but I _did_ find that its recreational use at raves first appeared around 1993 and the "legit" manufacturer changed its formulation in 1997 in response to concerns about spiked drinks. (The revised version turned light-colored drinks blue when it was added.) Then GHB as a date-rape drug became highly publicized in 1999. So it's likely that there was an awareness of the danger of at least Rohypnol when this episode aired, but it would have been new and topical info. (Credit to @Henrik_Holst for reminding me that Rohypnol preceded GHB.)

So, for Reptile Boy, it's worth mentioning that the show seemed to be illustrating the juxtaposition of Angel - who IS in fact way too old for Buffy and in reality we all know this and, although it was treated a little differently in the 90's (kind of like the awareness around drinks made by strangers), we can safely offer a little leniency here because of the universe that their in and because Buffy isn't exactly your normal teenage girl - and the frat guys who were excellent dramatizations of some of the worst behaviors a person can direct toward another during wooing or courtship. We have Cordelia's date (forgot their names) who was blatantly and abrasively belittling and condescending toward both Cordelia and Buffy, "when I was your age I wasn't into grown up things either," and then Buffy's date who was definitely more subtle but, perhaps for that reason, more threatening and manipulative as exemplified by his, "there's such a thing as being too mature," speech. On the other side of this you have angel, again who is in fact much to old for her (and the show isn't shying away from that after their conversation in the cemetery) BUT it is also working hard to demonstrate that those same conventions and assumptions we have about older men dating younger women may not apply. The issue, I think is widely understood to be power. The power imbalance that happens when one person is more experienced and holds an elevated place that they consciously or unconsciously exploit to influence and manipulate the younger partner into abandoning their own world view, adopting the older partner's world view, all the while being made to feel bad if they displease that person and to feel proud if they succeed at fitting into the mold that's been provided for them. At any rate, the show is doing its best to make it clear that there is no danger of this with Angel. There's so much to his character and their story but up to now, what we see is someone who is at least demonstrating a care and respect for her personhood, her boundaries, a desire to meet her where she's at on topics like the coffee date (which you picked up on really well and I loved what you had to say about that). Offering the coffee date and then allowing her to take lead on that is a perfect example of what I'm trying to say in my own longwinded way. I think that was a lot of the subtext in this show. The creators trying to demonstrate that contrast between those very toxic and abusive frat boys and Angel who is - we're asked to believe - the opposite of those things and, while too old, is not a threat to Buffy. Anyway, that's what I think the writers were trying to do here with that character. As for Halloween, loved your commentary. The only thing I wanted to add was, in addition to your thoughts on not pushing a friend to do things or wear things that they aren't comfortable in, I do think - and I think you'd agree - that it is important for a good friend to try to define that line between pushing or forcing or even shaming someone for not wanting to wear "sexy" close for instance, and doing the thing a friend should which is to help encourage you to build some confidence and try new things, WITHIN your own boundaries and at a pace with which you are open to taking. I think Buffy was just trying to help Willow in this way and I think its good that we didn't see her trying to talk Willow out of the outfit she wore to the dance in the Inca Mummy Girl episode because that would've established a pattern of behavior that might have been a little troubling. But here, she encouraged, maybe pushed a little too hard when she saw how uncomfortable Willow was, but ultimately accepted her choice, didn't shame her or call her out in front of Xander, and by the end Willow found that confidence all on her own. Always love seeing the little smile on her face just before she throws away the ghost outfit. Can't help but be proud for her. Thanks for the reactions. I'm a Buffy fan from way back and have been discussing the show for years now. I watch a lot of these and I really appreciate your tone and the pace you set when it comes to breaking down your thoughts and theories and expectations around the show. I'll be looking for the next one.

_Reptile Boy_ always felt a little like an '80's high school movie to me before I came across the fact that David Greenwalt wrote those types of movies in the '80's. It's also interesting that it has been stated in-universe that Angel, in terms of how old he looks as a human, is around the same age as the college age villains of the episode, and by the end, Angel is encouraged and praised for asking Buffy out, but these college age kids are horrible for sleeping with high schoolers. Even if they didn't roofie them it is illegal, and Angel, (human-looking) age-wise is in the same boat concerning Buffy. The writer for _Halloween,_ Carl Ellsworth, was fired after writing the script because it wasn't a good script, from what I understand. I am pretty sure that is why this episode is saturated with Joss Whedon one-liners. He rewrote it, and more than likely in a hurry. It was a good episode and I've always been curious as to what Carl's script was like.

The clearly bad guys, the troubled kids, ect....society was only starting to acknowledge that it could happen to anyone, from anyone 🤷♀️ It wasn't that long before this that latchkey kids staying out till the streetlights came on was the norm instead of the exception 🤷♀️ social media wasn't a thing, and when it started we weren't paying attention to the dangers it warned us about Our mistakes became your warnings 🤷♀️

You doing Willow’s rant about Giles needing to back off and the angel drama and Joyce pressure before hearing hers.. amazing
@stephaniebarker472 Жыл бұрын
I think the point of Willow’s ghost costume is that she wanted to be invisible, unseen. And by the end of the ep she finds the confidence in herself to allow others to see her and recognize she is worth receiving some attention.

It's a relatively small thing but it was nice in Reptile Boy that they were actually able to save Callie and even gave her character some good lines, which is not something a lot of shows would do. The actress who played her, Jordana Spiro, also went on to be in Ozark, another fantastic show. Buffy is known for it's great Halloween episodes and at least one unforgettable Thanksgiving one so you will not be disappointed. They even manage do a Christmas episode of sorts which I think might win you over. Giles aka Ripper has definitely been holding back in his training sessions with Buffy a little. If you go back and watch you can see that he always calls out his shots, giving her a bit of a warning.

Fast was common slang for "gives it up easy" back in the day. Poodle was a pet name in the 90s as well.

28:10 You know that you don't have to be romantically interested in someone to enjoy their company? Cordelia is funny and charming and can be very pleasant person to talk to, if she wants to. P.S. I adore terribly historically inaccurate dress and hair, but the notion, that noble women before 20th century were meek, helpless and useless is simply offensive. People didn't change, only technologies.

Willow's rant in the library was what made Giles see that he was pushing too hard by constantly having Buffy training. And so the talk with Buffy was part apology and part explaining why he was treating her the way he was.

Great double pack. "Reptile boy" had some good Cordelia moments. And "Halloween" is still in my Top 10 list of Buffy episodes.

Great reaction as always, 👍🏻 the only thing that's been a great pity 😕 was that you left out the scene when ghost-Willow "emerged" in the library and Giles almost having a "heart attack" 😂 Can't wait for the next episodes 🤩😊

5:30 "I forgot what kind of show this is." To be fair, i think we are supposed to be judging the age gap in this instance, and the monster of the week is a thinly veiled metaphor for the kind older men predators who deliberately target high school girls because they think they will be easier to control. BtVS loves its monsters as allegories for life difficulties and dangers

I like what you said about wishing to live in a different era. I used to have wanted to live in the 1950-60s. But since I’m biracial, that definitely wouldn’t be a good thing.

Next video lie to me and the dark age, both are great episodes, but lie to me is one the best episodes of Buffy ever and is the momente really changed to me. I can't wait for your reaction

I think For S2 and S3 at least its just a near constant run of really strong episodes

theres nothing wrong with the ghost costume in and of itself, theres something wrong with the choice of the ghost costume as it perpetuates an unhealthy pattern of low self esteem its not about the costume, its about the fact she keeps running and hiding

I was only 10 when this episode aired, but when I was in high school there was definitely not the same focus on not taking drinks you didn't see poured, or not putting your drinks down unattended. That definitely started becoming much more of a social focus after I was in college.
@whodovoodoo2313 Жыл бұрын
I believe rohypnol's use in drinks was still new at the time Reptile Boy takes place, so people generally didn't know to worry about being drogged. There were warnings about getting dronk, but having a strange / mystery drink or two wasn't seen as being dangerous like it is now.

Born in 97 nice so you were born the same year Buffy first aired 97-03 whilst Angel aired in 99-04

A frat party where drinks are laced and the guys literally worship a giant phallic demon? Sounds about right 🤔 Halloween is my favourite time of year, and this episode is just fantastic!

Spike has been studying Buffy, remember, and seen how good she is and learned to be wary after realising she has back-up. He's also highly irreverent and doesn't care about protocol. He knows it's not guaranteed he'd win against her in a fair fight so he's perfectly happy to take her out in unfair circumstances.😅 I also find it interesting that you expect the villain to have honour
@chrisallen19821982 Жыл бұрын
Great reaction as always, fast = easy, so Larry was calling Buffy a slut. The fact you though Spike or any vampire would want a fair fight with Buffy did make me laugh. What I would say Is I know Buffy, Willow and Xander all look older than they are playing the are very few 16yo boys who are secure in their masculinity imo. Also welcome to one of the best lines in the whole show "Hello ripper"

Per the 1997 vibe on being handed a drink: That was definitely less of a focus for middle/high school girls. And more of a concern for college aged girls. And Buffy here, still in high school. Also, to the point of the creepy guy, why he "loves high school girls."

Powerful spells need an anchor. Something the spell can be in and sometimes even draw power from. Ethan used the representation of a god as an anchor, so it makes sense that destroying the head would break the spell.

05:28 and if you mean the kind of show that thinks it's slimy for college guys/adults to be hitting on high schoolers, well you're absolutely right :D as we did the decade before for this show, and the previous decade and.... Just in general I didn't have an issue with Angel and Buffy. It's a fantasy world and it's pretty much two super hero's coming together, but everyone has a different opinion about that, the age gap and all points of view are legitimate. Now if Angel was hitting on Willow, ewwwwww..... I was never sold on shipping Buffy and Angel, but I loved the long game of the story. LOVED hearing your predictions about the show and wondering where the characters will go❣ There is SO MUCH foreshadowing in Reptile Boy about one of our main characters. I never caught it until I went back and rewatched the series. Thank you for doing such long videos and 2 episodes. Great fun! I also loved Xander giving Angel shit at the end of the episode and not caring LOL.

Larry calling Buffy "fast" was referring to how quickly she progresses things physically with guys (as opposed to "taking things slow.") The exact implications may vary, but roughly speaking, he's saying that dating Buffy is a faster way to get laid than dating most other girls.
@holi117 Жыл бұрын
Basically insinuating she’s “easy” or “promiscuous” or, in real nasty terms “slu**y*
@tehcoolemu Жыл бұрын
@@holi117 Similar, but I actually don't think it's quite the same. Someone who's "fast" may still be very picky about who they date at all. But yes, that's the general vibe of Larry's comment.

"fast" means that she puts out quickly. Implying he wouldn't have to date her long before things get pretty "heavy" physically.
