I don't think the message at the end was poorly done and actually was empowering for a lot of women to hear. And Spike might save the day but by the end, that was still Buffy's journey and that was still her that put everything in order. Without her, nothing like this would have been done. And I'm sorry, season 3's Graduation Day wasn't gonna be a good season finale because there were so many things to do with the characters and season 5 is by far the best behind season 3. The whole show is good and even season 7, despite being way weaker

Buffy was supposed to be out of character in "When She Was Bad," everyone calls attention to it. She wasn't dealing with the fact that she was literally murdered by the Master and ti was manifesting in anger, recklessness, and evasiveness. (Also, the title spells it out. It's a reference to a poem by Longfellow that goes, "There was a little girl who had a little curl right int he middle of her forehead. And when she was good she was very, very good, but when she was bad, she was horrid.")

I think it's one of the greatest pieces of media ever made and Buffy is such a good female protagonist with layers and great character growth each season. She's never flat, bland and always learns her lessons later on. SMG portrays her with emotion and an insane amount of gravitose
@EmoBearRights12 күн бұрын
I know Im in a minority of one but i love season seven. I see it as a season about hope which i think was needed after a season about depression. There's a big diffference between Angel and Spike's past deads and Anya's. At this point they both have souls and their murders were comitted unsouled. Spike is killing but its against his will and Buffy doesn't know that. Anya has a soul has already had to reverse something she did but it hasn't stopped her doing more bad stuff. She doesnt seem to be repentant or have any intention of stopping. Buffy isn't a judge or a dispenser of justice after the fact - she kills as part of her as protector to stop the vamps and demons murdering others. Xander doesn't get its not about love or hatred but damage limitation and she did kill someone she loved to protect the world namely Angel. You're not reading the text with enough nuance here. Xander is NOT right and its different as Spike isn't in control of himself while Anya was. Buffy didn't see Anya's vulnerabilities or doubts - it was Willow who did who could act to save her. It makes sense that Buffy and Anya don't care enough or know each other well enough to try and understand each other but Buffy knows Spike and she knows how diffgerent Angelus and Angel are. Spike killing with a soul especially one he gained for himself and she can see the weight it has on his guilt doesn't make sense and she's right. Xander is being a hypocritical douche. With the potentials and the vampire its different - there's a group of them so they outnumber him, he's established as a slob so he's probably not the most formidable and Spike and Buffy were at that point right outside and with enhanced vampric hearing Spike would have heard at least if they sounded like they were struggling and needed help. The last words Buffy says before locking them in is you've got me which implies she's intending to step in if they need it. Its like doing the same watcher's test with a safety net which isn't an unreasonable thing to do and Wes's comments about facing vampires under controlled conditions implies the watchers actually do similar things with their own watchers. You do have points about Kennedy though.

You need to really pay attention to season 4 season finale the whole dream episode was literally giving tons of foreshadowing. Which is what I really love about the show its long-term storytelling. The reason why Buffy lost against the Ubervamp so hard in 7x10 was because she had been deprived of sleep for days, which severely affected her strength and fighting skill, also causing her hallucinations. She struggled against the Ubervamp in the next episode because it was the very same turok-han that beat her in the episode prior, which also happened to be the probably most skilled turok-han the First had on its roster.
@JBSpookyReview15 күн бұрын
If you have to make assumptions that it *might* be the most skilled turok-han, well that's just a sign of bad writing. No matter how deprived she was, they made the Turok-Han look like an average vamp by the very next episode.
@nathanielbacon266114 күн бұрын
@JBSpookyReview To be fair, they didn't make the Uberbamp seem like a normal vamp by the next episode. By season 7, Buffy can fight like 5 normal vampires at once by herself, pretty easily. The Ubervamp kicks her ass all 3 times they meet. She just eeks out a victory at the end of the last battle through her resourcefulness. She's performing in a weakened state because she's suffering from sleep deprivation and a lack of confidence. Buffy's powers are always effected by her emotions, like Spiderman. ALSO, we later learn that The First is massively empowering Caleb by regularly "merging" with him once he becomes it's second in command...AFTER the Ubervamp is killed. So it goes to reason that The First may well have been doing the same thing for the Ubervamp when it was serving that same purpose, which would explain why it's so much stronger than the remaining Turuk-Han. The writing is imperfect here, but there's reason to be found if you're putting the pieces together.

Pretty sure in James's interview or other interviews he said that Joss was horrible to him in other ways, both physically and verbally. Mainly took it out on his character though. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it's a show I definitely misjudged and am so angry at myself for not getting into sooner. When it came out, I was a kid and though I heard of it, when I thought about the premise of "cheerleader fighting vampires", I just was not interested and passed on it (big mistake lol) but over the years I started hearing how the show actually had depth with characters that go through real character development and conitnuacy as well as even having nods to alternative subculture (which I was and still am into today) and it peaked my interested but I hadn't gotten around to sitting and watching it until 2020 during the Covid lockdown and needless to say, I was so freaking hooked on the show and was so upset at myself for not getting into the show sooner and I could see why the show was considered a legacy series. I agree that the season finale of season 3 would've been the perfect series finale but like you, I still did enjoy quite a few episodes of the later seasons including the "Hush" episode, that episode actually terrified me, the concept was amazingly gruesome lol. But I also like how they handled Willow and Tara as a lesbian couple because as a gay man myself, it was nice to see a lesbian portrayal that was done with respect and not some gross fetishization, it really was representation done right in my opinion. I will admit that I never grew to like Dawn, her inclusion was annoyingly and sloppily done and I dunno, I just could never warm up to her and at most I just tolerated the character's presence and it subconsciously reinforced why the show should've ended at season 3. But of course the episode "The Body", just amazing. But like you, I also was not a fan of season 7. Even with it going back to the basics, the school's interior design looked bland and boring compared to the original design, the new characters were not likeable, and I also agree that Anya's death was horribly done especially with Xander's non-reaction to it (deplorable lol).I also couldn't stand Kennedy neither as they clearly forced her in to be a (poor) rebound replacement for Tara. Season 7 was a mess and even when I first watched the finale episode, I remember not feeling anything lol Definitely a sad example of a show going out with a less than stellar ending for sure. But overall, despite the later half of the show, it still definitely deserves it's legacy status and despite the not so great things that happened behind the scenes, I just hope the actresses know that they really did make something special. Amazing retrospective!

As a Brit myself, I never understood why Whedon and the writers always had Buffy and the Scooby gang address Giles by his surname, instead of his Christian name, Rupert. I get that “Giles,” sounds and rolls off the tongue better than “Rupert,” (in itself a very stereotypical British upper class name) but I always found that it was rude of the others to address him that way. I don’t know of anybody who considers someone a friend and/or work colleague to address them always by their surname. It would have been much better just to have made the characters first name “Giles,” and given him a suitable surname to go with it. Kudos though to Whedon and the writers for not going overboard and making Giles too much of a stereotypical Brit, by dressing him up in a Saville Row suit, bowler hat and giving him an an umbrella whilst making him sound like a character from an Agatha Christie novel, with a posh plummy accent, “Oh, I say, what a most delectable day here in Sunnydale,” (which no Brit, even back in 1997, ever sounded like). Shout out to Anthony Head who made Giles a fully rounded, though sometimes flawed, character who had a strong moral compass and a caring attitude towards Buffy as a friend and mentor, and a friend and teacher to the rest of the Scooby gang.

@@JBSpookyReview yeah I had just done my first buffy angel rewatch as an adult, I watched it when I was in like 3rd grade so I couldn't appreciate how well crafted that episode was just muscially and thematically, it's also because my pattern of listening to music is to find a handful of songs and beat them to death all day for like 4-6 months and then forget about them. It was honestly so embarrassing when I watched my yearly recap thing on yt music and it showed me that slide about how much I listened to it

Three hours?! You were not kidding Mister The Spooky. I'm going keep my 'this week I lack any meaningful sleep' theme and sink this, starting at eleven peem, having had seven hours of light nap since, um, seventy two hours ago. Then I'm going to go pester Mauler. Then I will try and sleep, then I will go to the pub. But firstly, I LOVE the movie BTVS. SMG is unquestionably the better, but, kristy gets the whole 'the cheerleader is the one who saves the day' vibe a lot more on. I know Stick WHeedle didn't wanna go that way but I maintain it's a better motif. It's not like you couldn't have her evolve to where we end up, after all. I also liked that the series mentioned the movie as canon(ish) more than once so it's a recasting not a reboot, but the best bit is Peewee's extended death sequence. Also, "We're better than you, we can do anything!" "Oh yeah? Clap!" Although KS' finest moment is probably Ltj Janet 'Bio' Kowalski in Hot Shots. Y'know, BTVS and TXF do seem to have stuff. BTVS also has the question raised that all of these things in all of these episodes all work and yet basically never interact. Why don't the death manifests turn up in other episodes, for example. How come, if it's just a question of cunning spelling, don't the scooby gang make up a wardrobe of specialist costumes so they can magic themselves some extra skills when needed? If some guy can make perfectly passable human replica robots, why the hell isn't everyone? With regards Willow switching from computers to witchcraft, it is worthwhile noting that there's only one letter change between Arcade and Arcane, so it might just be a typo. Also, Hex means something in both fields. Also, Hexadecimal is in ReBoot, which had an X-Files episode. "With Faith rubbing off on Buffy..." Yeah, that happened in everyone's head. I have to say, yes, the end to season three was meant to serve as the series finale, and in many ways it ought to have stopped there. Going forward was going to be rough in many ways. Not that there weren't a lot of good episodes to come, there were, including what is, IMHO, the best episode ever made - The Body, which is a contender for greatest episode of TV cross-genre ever made, it's up there with Two Cathedrals and Stars, but the one two three seasons made a single cohesive, tight saga. It's, like, Dune has sequels. They're OK. The Dune sequels also have sequels, they're not so much OK. It also doesn't help that the next season is the goddamn initiative one, which is just icky. As always I should wait until I've finished watching because shortly after typing that, you basically said the exact same thing except we have different best episodes ever XD. Ah well. If only there were some way to undo what has been done. Harmony is, just, every good character in BTVS is a vampire, Just sayin'. Spike, Dru, Darla and Harmony are all kick-ass cool and funny. Also, Harmony was played by Mercedes McNab, who was A: The Girl Scout in The Addams Family and, as an adult, B: also a great deal hotter than you'd think. I cannot get over the notion that Valley Girl is a more pernicious character trait than Vampire. It's such a funny concept, executed so well. Adam is the name of the monster in Frankenstein, incidently, so, that was a bit on the nose. The Initiative was horribly executed, but, bear with me, dig around in the brain and reimagine the possibilities if the Institute was actually the SCP Foundation. THAT would have kicked donkey. Also, there is no way an SCP TV series shouldn't be a thing. yeah the Dracula thing is obviously a joke, it's just flat out mocking the Hammer style vampires. Ah, we've got to The Body. yeah. I would say the interesting thing about the Body is about six hundred things all of them amazing, but, it's the only episode of BTVS to actually feature horror. Oh, there have been monsters and demons and all that but that's halloween stuff. TB is genuine horror. Implacable, unbeatable monster. Fear and grief and shock. I disagree you could intro people on this episode, I think you absolutely need to be in grace with Joyce, Buffy et al to ride along with them on the agony. I can recall watching this first time. Girlfriends and her parents, and all of us were just locked in. No one could believe it was real, that sort of thing just does not happen. Everyone thought this would be an alternate reality, or time travel, or she'd be saved, but then at the end she's just f*^king dead and there's nothing anyone can do about it, and suddenly the whole world is cold and lonely and frightening and that's just that. Roll credits. The worse part, you know, your whole world has turned to drek in an instant and no matter how much they say they care, everyone else seems to just shrug it off and move on. Your brain says there's nothing they could do, but your soul says they just never cared. You lose everything. It comes back, you grow a new you, you get why people were like that, you move on, one day you laugh at a joke again, but, you know. This episode nailed that thing so accurately, so precisely, yeah, that's why it's up there with the all-time greats, a legit work of art. Oh yeah, hey, I don't like neologisms at all but incel's, yecht. Having said that, ACTUAL incels are skeevy AF. Same as pick-up artists, and MFs. Basically anyone who thinks of the opposite sex as being solely interesting for the sticky-sticky is just skin-crawling. yeah, the show finale glued boats. And Joss 'Likes to be' Whedon is a douche canoe. One of the big issues I see with the creative arse, is, people have got it stuck in their heads that there should always be more X. I hear lots of people angry about Star Wars, Star Trek, Trek Wars, Star Lords of the Rings, all this jazz, you know, saying they want better franchise stuff. Make Trek Lore Great Again! But I rarely see anyone saying, you know, maybe what you really want, deep down, is to clear your head, so you can look at those three Blue Raymonds on your shelf, and smile, knowing you can watch Hope, Empire and Jedi any time you like. And also knowing there's a lot of fan stuff out there, but you don't have to worry about all that crap. Same here, man. What would new Buffy actually bring? How would it improve what we had already? It was a thing of its time and those of use who watched it first time, we'll always smile when we remember just how cool it was. But it's gone. What is needed is fresh stories. New characters. New worlds and universes to explore because it's perhaps the spirit of the unknown that enchants us more, right? You don't really know what the Force is, but by Jimmy Jamingo are you totes up for finding out! What the hell is a cheerleader vampire hunter? Stay tuned! The real world is an illusion, which can be manipulated by the observer? And they're wearing black latex trench coats? I am enthralled! There is no wonder in reboots, no mystery in animated seasons. These added seasons, reboots, all of that shit, the reason why it all glows boats it because we know what the mystery is when we start. It's JUST more of the same. In the end, the terminal phase, those few left who are creative have been pilloried and removed. All that's left in the writing are people who are utterly devoid of creativity. They can't do anything new. They only know to vandalise what went before. So. No, no to new Buffy, no to reboots, no to sequels and reimaginings, until the rainbow haired egomaniacs are driven out of the writing room, oh, I've gone off on one again. Anyway. Seriously good stuff, JB, I'm no stranger to marathons, this is a great one. I rather suspect Mauler will be in touch on some level because he's been warning he'd eventually get around to doing this, and, you got there first. Congratulations!

I'm with you in that I feel stories at some point need to end. I don't need every franchise I enjoy to go on forever. Ghostbusters is my favourite movie, but I wish it would stay dead. X-Files is my favourite show, but it does not need to come back. Sometimes things just need to end. Also there's no way Mauler would ever have anything to do with me lol. I'm way too small of a channel and not nearly as intelligent as those guys.

@@JBSpookyReview Fringy and Platoon were smaller than you when they got noticed, and no, they're not amazingly intelligent people (especially Fringy, by the Gods Great Gazebo do jokes sail over his head) , they're just good at sounding that way, IMHO, you'd fit right in. The only real difference would be they tend to focus on new media and you're retrospective. The main thing is, Mauler's an avowed Buffy fanatic, it comes up often, if nothing else I'm sure he'd enjoy your epic, for it is great. Going highlight by highlight never stopped being interesting, tons of cool BTS stuff I had no idea about, enough jokes to keep the zing up. Seriously, you had my attention for three hours straight. I have to do their marathons in chunks lest I go mad :-) Well, go more mad, maybe.

The first turakon being merged with the first just like calab makes it make more sense why that 1 was so much harder to kill then all the others in the finale. So my head cannon is before the first brought calab to sunnydale to be it's fighter the first merged with the turakon and planned for him to kill buffy until she won. After buffy killed it the first brought calab and merged with him giving him the super overpower but not the rest of the turakon. That's my head cannon hope it helps someone

For season 7, I disagree that the concept of the potentials is bad. Buffy the vampire slayer is a show about growing up and accepting to become an adult and one of the biggest responsability that you may have as an adult is raising kids. It is globally what Buffy is doing in this season by going back to highschool as an adviser and training the potentials, she passes on her experience and power to prepare them to be slayers (adults). It is a great concept for the final season but it surely was poorly executed for all the reasons explained in this video.

We owe the Buffy series becoming the hit that it is to Kristy Swanson which some people seem to forget she is not only the og but the reason we got Sarah Michelle Gellar. I was never fond of Riley but after getting a more info here as to why he wasn't right for Buffy I clearly see why he wanted to be the typical strong man wanting to be the provider & protector for his gf. But when his gf is gifted with abilities to help her protect against the forces of darkness & she has to think of others & sees other suitors vying for her affections it eats away at him like "Why am I here? I don't feel very needed, she pretty much has everything under control, she's not being affectionate towards me." Riley was pretty much feeling emasculated so what does he do? Instead of trying to talk to Buffy he allows himself to become a blood bank for vampires & takes his anger out on Buffy. I mean how long before he would've started becoming abusive towards her because he wasn't feeling like a man by then Buffy would've had to kick his ass to the curb because she wasn't going to tolerate his insecurities & jealousy. On top of that he cheated on her, he then gives her an ultimatum plus Buffy can't leave Sunnydale, she has responsibilities not only to the town but importantly to her family I'm glad he left he can start a new life & find another chick who isn't as strong, fierce or independent as Buffy. Buffy is better off without him he would've been more of a hinderance to her as for Xander calling him a "One in a lifetime guy" tells me he rather loose Buffy to an ordinary guy like Riley than to supernatural guys like Spike & Angel plus Xander's still a little butt hurt that Buffy never gave him the time of day. I found out in the comics that Xander started dating Dawn which to me is gross then Buffy takes interest in Xander I'm thinking "Buffy have some self-respect there was a reason why you were never into Xander." I must say Clare Kramer as Glory looks stunning & sexy in that red dress the song "Lady In Red" comes to mind "I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you do tonight never seen you shine so bright."
@JBSpookyReview13 күн бұрын
I agree with everything you just said.

Riley isn't just an ordinary guy to Xander he's a ego ideal - the kind of person Xander (who like Spike has zero good male role models to base himself on) wants to be. Xander in a sense wants his idealised self to be with Buffy and there's also a sense from Buffy that he ticks the boxes. On paper he's ideal except he's not - Buffy doesn't need or really want a Riley. He does develop as a result of being with her and becomes more open minded as a result but both need to be running the show and they settle into their natural state of being allies. Buffy needs someone she can develop alongside who will support her but let her take the lead. Who that is - well that's a debate for the ages (which frequently turns vicious). I have my opinion but most of us agree it wasn't Riley.

The whole original premise was honestly kind of ridiculous though and typical Whedon not knowing nearly as much as he thinks he does. "The girl is always the victim" ummm no, the girl is usually the heroine; that's why the trope is literally called Final Girl. In fact, someone other than the girl surviving is the rare surprising twist.
