Can't forget that from Buffy's perspective, Willow and Zander were totally onboard with her killing Angel at the end of season 2. They also treated her like shit in episode 2. All of that and the fact that she's the only one that distinguishes between 'Angel' and 'Angelus' and I can completely understand why she didn't tell anyone.
@quinnsinclair70284 жыл бұрын
@@countrye3013 I can totally understand why she didn't tell her friends. I think she should have told Giles though, if for no other reason than simple prudence. Giles, even when he knows Buffy is making a mistake always leaves it in her court to ultimately make it or not. I doubt he would have been happy to know Angel was alive but he wouldn't have forced Buffy to do or not do anything about it. I think telling Giles would have been totally safe. But I know why she didn't. Cause having Angel as a secret cemented him in a place of fantasy where she could flirt with the idea of acting on her feelings. If she'd told Giles it would have brought the situation back to reality. It was a dumb move but I understand a sixteen year old girl doing it.

"Buffy?" "Yeah?" ... "Nothing." Honestly that moment breaks my heart every single time. Every time I watch I'm like "Faith ask for help PLEASE!" I want those two to be best friends...or more...lol that tease at the start of this ep is one of my favourite moments. Faith definitely doesn't have the best judgement but she desperately needs a friend and some guidance and I don't know what Giles is doing but if he's her Watcher then why is she still living in that skeezy motel and who is paying her rent and if it's her then how does she get the money and why doesn't anyone care that she's a child who has clearly had a lot of trauma in her life? Meanwhile my list of reasons I hate Xander just grows and grows, he totally manipulated Faith in this episode and the way he takes advantage of her lack of faith in people (pun intended) really pisses me off. I have a lot of time for Faith and none for Xander, this is my bias I'll admit it. But few things he says and does make me angrier than "Can I watch?" I didn't like him when I first watched the show and I dislike him more and more as the years pass.
@patrickholt22704 жыл бұрын
His experience of Angel is very different from Buffy's. He's repeatedly had to confront Angel to protect Buffy or Cordelia or Willow. Almost the first time they met, Angel used him as live bait to try to charm Spike. He only avoided getting bitten at that point because Spike saw through Angel's weak ruse. He plays the role of a protector despite being just a squishy human without Buffy's power, or Oz's (who is mysteriously rarely around to carry his weight in protecting Willow) and that makes him angry and mistrustful towards Angel. Then there's his dysfunctional family and homelife, which leaves him with more fraught emotions, even by the standards of 17 year old boys, and more dependence on his friends who he loves and is desperate to protect. He's not okay with Angel having tortured Giles, killed Jenny Calendar, broken Buffy's heart and setting the plot which put Willow in a coma and his arm in traction. He's got good reason to be vigilent, when it was other people letting their guard down with Angel which caused all of that. Angel isn't safe, even if he is a friend when he's good. He never liked Angel much - yes as a rival when he still thought he had a chance with Buffy, but also just as a guy. Not everyone is required to like someone. Other guys will see a very different side to a man than young women who are attracted to him may.
@quinnsinclair70284 жыл бұрын
@@patrickholt2270 Yes, because "she decided to date you instead of me" is always a strong explanation for prejudiced towards someone and totally justifies manipulating others into attempting to kill them multiple times. Xander watched vampires kill his best friend ON THE FIRST EPISODE! He said it: "I don't like vampires". Then, yes, kinda petty, when Buffy fell for Angel he took it badly, but he was already biased (even when he didn't liked Owen, for instance, he didn't hate him as he did Angel... because he is a vampire!). Then, everybody seems to forget, Angel, the perfect frakkin' boyfriend everybody is so upset Xander hates so much LEFT BUFFY TO DIE! If Xander hadn't force him to take him to The Master's lair, Buffy would be an ex-slayer by now. And then, the vampire-with-a-soul used him as bait to trick Spike. Yeah, I'm sure Xander's hate for Angel is so unfair...

@magicdft4 жыл бұрын
it wasn't when she moved on that he realized he had feelings for her it was when she almost died at the end of last season. that kind of thing can change the way you look at a person. he has known willow since kindergarten and was friends with her since then and when you have known someone that long and are a dumb teenage boy it is real easy to not notice the way she feels about you and put her in the friend zone and take her being there for granted. but then you almost loose her for good and you have to come to terms with that. you start thinking about what your life would be like without her in it and you cant stand that thought and then suddenly you are looking that that girl with new eyes. you realize how being around her makes you feel and suddenly that switch is flipped and it is hard as hell to go back. just speaking from experience there and maybe I'm projecting a bit but i don't think he is a jerk. he is just your typical 90s dumb teenage boy

The episode itself... oh, this hurt. Yes, Buffy was definitely in the wrong, she should have told /somebody/, Giles, or Willow, somebody. But Xander was absolutely in the wrong too, and his jealously and prejudice was definitely a factor, and I hated that he lied to Faith by omitting parts of the story she had a right to know. Giles... oh his words to Buffy hurt too, and he was valid, but at the same time, I am among those who do not think Angel and Angelus are one and the same. Think back to Innocence, Angelus even said "Dream on schoolgirl, your boyfriend is dead." Angel, however, does seem to hold himself responsible for Angelus' actions, much like Bucky holds himself responsible for the actions of the Winter Soldier. It's heartbreaking, all of it...

This episode is so frustrating. Mostly, it's Xander. Everyone has flaws, but Xander in this episode pushed the needle from "wow he's a stupid teenage boy" well into "you are not trustworthy and Buffy is wrong to forgive him". He deliberately withheld the information about Willow working to get Angel's soul back. He chose to limit the information field for his own personal gain and to serve his selfish purposes, in such a way that betrayed not only Buffy but also Willow and the rest of the gang. Even putting aside the thing with Willow and Cordelia, that alone means he should get NO AMOUNT OF TRUST or benefit of the doubt when it comes to this situation. And here he is again, willing to employ violence and KILL someone, who has a soul, simply because it would serve his own agenda. It's gross. It's unforgivable. It makes it to where even seasons later I don't trust Xander when he says something and his opinion is always darkened by the doubt of his motives. Xander is fundamentally selfish and that's his flaw, and it's one that I just can't abide in a close friend. Everyone has their limit and he goes well past mine. Truly, screw you Xander. You're a tool, pretending to be a nerdy nice guy.

The spooky background is great. Happy Halloween! There's probably whole books dedicated to BtVS mythology but it's basically very pagan or polytheistic yet crosses and holy water work so Christianity is also a thing. There's similarities to Supernatural but the gods in general tend to be more powerful and harder or impossible to kill. Really kind of love that Giles totally knows about Xander and Willow but has said nothing about it other than subtly letting them know of his disapproval.

This episode starts Faith down a path that in retrospect is obvious but hard to watch. Her first Watcher was brutally murdered in front of her, her next a stone-cold liar and scammer playing her to get power. She's so clearly desperate for friends and for any adults to genuinely care about her. It's very telling that she keeps trying to find casual ways to even spend more time with Buffy and Buffy just always has other things going on. Which is fair, but for Faith it probably feels like being pushed aside. Especially in this episode where she realizes Buffy's also been lying to her. The whole crew basically just don't acknowledge her unless it's time to kill something.

whenever xander has a point he ruins it by being jealous and nosy and generally unpleasant. see: this, becoming part 2

You know, if you can compartimentalise the Willow/Xander thing fromall the wrongbad, it really is the cutest thing ever.

"Scared" is a good tactic to go on on this show (as you should've guessed by now).

Thus continues my issues with Xander - he has legit points often, but I struggle with a lot of his behavior around those legit points.

Yeah, Xander has a real way of making you not want to agree with him even when he turns out to be partially right.

Buffy near beginning to Giles: "Interesting lady. Can I kill her?" Buffy near end: kills her (Mrs Post). Of course, didn't kill her directly.

I love this Halloween season as well. Just watched Scream for the first time in a long time and forgot how great the first one was! If you like slasher movies. Sarah Michelle gellar was in “scream 2” and “i know what you did last summer” That’s apparently how she met her husband.

One element that you start to see is the having Faith/Buffy starting to bond as Slayers. But everyone finding out that Buffy was hiding Angel does kind of put that relationship and the relationship with the Scoobies at odds.

It was clever of Mrs Post to put Giles off balance and on the defensive so he wouldn't think to question her credentials. Oh, it's Tai Chi that Buffy and Angel are doing, by the way.

No, Buffy and Angel are most definitely not "smashing". Buffy has not decided what the status of their relationship is. She is hurting and wants to be near Angel but they have not officially reconnected emotionally or physically. They are both in a pent up holding pattern.

03:23 - 03:33 (Lesbian Subtext Bell Ringing) 05:04 - 05:08 G:"I think the Council might frown upon that." B:"I stand by my question."(Side Note:I had to put on my DVD and checking the eng sub to translate Giles' line...I just *can't-understand* whenever that man speaks! It's so bloody frustrating!!!X-S) There are 3 iconic Bangel scenes I *never* forgot in all these years.1 is(obviously)the end of S2,another is the end of ep 3x04 with Angel dropping at Buffy's feet hugging her legs 🥺😭 and then there's this one 05:11 - 05:22. 06:46 - 06:50 My poor little Willow...!💔I mean...I know *she* is doing something wrong,but still...my poor little Willow!🥺I mean...just...hear me out...I know this is not an excuse really,but she was having a crush on Xander for *YEARS* and he NEVER reciprocated...now he does it ONLY when they are BOTH with other people..and it's not even the 1st time he acts this way!!Remember when he was heartbroken because Cordelia had just dumped him,but AS SOON as he got Buffy drooling all over him he seemed not to care anymore?!Or how he was so interested in Faith's naked fight story *with Cordelia sitting right next to him?!?!* Seriously,that dude is so much focused on ALL the women he CAN'T have...CONSTANTLY!And to do this to WILLOW,who has been crushing on him basically FOREVER it's just...low! I'm sorry,I know I'm supposed to blame them both _and I do_ but I can't help but to blame Xander *just a bit more...!!* 😠💢 09:57 - 10:02 *ANGELUS!* NOT ANGEL! *ANGE-FUCKING-LUS!!!* STOP MIXING THE 2 DUDES UP ALREADY!!!>O

Before getting to an area of extreme disagreement, thanks I love these and checking for this is one of the first things I do when winding down at the end of a Tuesday. Now to what I wrote first: Yet another ep where Buffy's friends are some of the suckiest friends EVER. Except this episode was wonderful. Was about to type "and if you were wondering why some of us are inclined to genuinely HATE Xander, this is yet another exhibit" & then you said "Xander is not in the wrong here". I love you in these recaps but ... aaaaaaaaàhhhhhhhhh. At least you didn't think Miss Post was in the right. :: glares:: Otherwise great recap of great episode! These are so much fun! It's like introducing a friend to the show and comparing notes with them after (except none of my RL friends would think Xander was other than totally in the wrong here cause they're not evil) (that was a joke) (sorta). If you like the actor and want to see him in something where he's not a dick half of the time, try Psycho Beach Party. It's awesome! Seriously though great rewatch ep; loved it despite our (very very) different perspectives!

She may not necessarily have had one. Especially in Britain, an unmarried woman can sometimes use "Mrs" to sound dignified. Like Mrs Hughes.

1:00 Actually the first couple of seasons is more based on Milton's Paradise Lost and Dante's Divina Comedia than the actual Bible. Let's call them the Bible's first pop culture spinnoffs.

OK, I'll bite. I get the context of all the books behind you except "Phrenology"? I know what it means, but that one seems like "one of these things is not like the other." Unless the skull on top of the book is for practice? :-)

The first time I saw this, I HATED Gwendolyn Post. It was gratifying to see that she was the real idiot in the end XD. I was so sad about Faith having her trust compromised though. Also, Xander low key annoyed the fuck out of me this episode. But this was all in all a fun episode. And now Angel is fully back in the picture... oh shit!
