How you can not be a “survival guy”? That’s kind of not human. Animals are survivalists.

Nice setup. 👍 Absolute best CB antenna is a hustler 102 in stainless steel whip with a 4-6" heavy duty spring. Next best is a Wilson 5000 or striker, followed by a Wilson 2000. Then there's everything else. The Wilson 5000 or 2000 is probably the best for general use as your whip doesn't end up hitting everything. Gmrs is basically line of sight regardless of how much power you put out. So even though the max legal is 50 Watts, you're not going to see that much more performance with a rooftop Mount antenna over a 10 or 20 watt radio. Hard to tell but that looks like a bearcat 980 single side band CB. You need another single side band to use the SSB portion, but SSB is 12 Watts out of that radio. You'll get a lot more range running SSB instead of a.m. I would consider regular CB and gmrs to both be line of sight radios regardless of power. Yes you can do skip with CB, however I wouldn't call it reliable. I run a chameleon MPAS base with a 102-in CB whip and heavy duty spring. This gives me fairly good 20 m to 10 m performance and I've even run 40 and 80 on it. I have a 10-1 matching tuner though. I have just a little magmount for gmrs frequencies. This gives me local and national comms in my vehicle. I hacked my radio to even run on the CB bands, although I have plenty of legal CBs if I want to run one of those

All that's awesome but I make budget friendly decisions that work. If you can't afford a 5000 the 2000 I have runs fine. I could have used the high priced stuff but with the economy the way it is my family wouldn't appreciate it lol. Thank you for your comment and advice it will help the big bank cats.

@@StepOneSurvivalI was talking about pure performance, not necessarily price. actually the 102 inch whip is the cheapest of all the options next to a fire stick. At least it used to be. I don't know what they run now, but you used to be able to get a 102-in whip for $30 bucks. I mentioned hustler because they actually use a tempered stainless steel and it doesn't retain odd shapes like some of the cheaper stainless steel whips to. The reason the Wilson 5000 has slightly better performance than the 2000 is the 5000 has a beefier coil and more silver plating. This equals less resistance of the antenna. Same with the striker. The question might come up is a 2000 that much worse than a 5000 and the answer with four watts is probably no. If you were running more watts, it would probably be more of an issue. I'm talking the use of several hundred Watts like some of the big rigs do. Under 50 Watts you probably wouldn't notice a difference. I think you already had the long extension but that is one way to get better performance out of a loaded antenna. Getting the loading coil higher up equals slightly better performance. The difference between 9 in and a foot probably isn't something someone's going to notice. However going from base Mount to a foot up can make a big difference. If your system is working I wouldn't touch it. The reason the 102-in whip is the absolute best performer is because it's a true quarter wave and doesn't rely on a loading coil. Anything that uses a loading coil such as a Wilson or striker is a compromise antenna. These antennas employ other tricks to get better performance even though they are compromised. In Wilson's case, they silver plate the wire inside the coil in order to lower resistance. But like I said, if you don't want to be hitting every tree branch or fuel Island roof, you have to go with a compromised antenna. The added height of the 102 inch also increases range and reception. At the cost of hitting every low-hanging branch.

@@kennethh5657 once again I appreciate the comments they help others that don't understand the difference between the antennas. Sirio antenna has that same wrapped wire goin on as the 2000 Wilson but it also claims to be a 4000 its all about getting it up lol that's what she said.

Damn BA! 20 years in the Marines and I'm lucky if I can run one radio! I have a Uniden 980 SSB as my base station. Can talk to my Midland car radio solid out to 12-15 mile radius. Haven't set up my GMRS base station yet, but that's next. What do you have at home for talking to your vehicle or handhelds? Thanks for the info Marine. S/F.

Is that the side band version of the uniden CB? If it's not the sideband version you should seriously consider side band in the future. Shooting skip on the sideband you can talk considerably further than regular citizens band.

It's hard to choose. The RT95 after I unlocked it is nice though. Everyone here chats on GMRS because of the UTVs and Tractors so it's hard to part with the RA25. CB is a chatroom on 17 but I could part with it.
