I had the exact same issues with the Fuchs wheels when doing a restoration for a relative of mine. Difficult to judge where to place the tape lines... It took me many hours to get the masking correct. Its interesting to see that other people found it difficult too!

This is one of the best, most intelligently thought out reworkings of a Porsche that I have ever seen. Absolutely beautiful, increased performance via major weight-loss of a car that already sparkles in pretty well any arena of road performance. :-)

I always loved the look of bare, clear-coated composite/Kevlar/Carbon. I see the weave as a work of art when you look at it! Wonder if he should have left the composite panels unpainted and painted the rest of the (non composite) car dark gray/black to match the panels. That said, I also love how they're hidden & it looks like a factory Porsche (the point I guess). Always had a soft spot in my heart for old silver Porsches (Germany's official racing color)

Great video! As a Porsche fan, I would have liked to have seen the car being driven and the actual performance of the car! 800kgs is a massive change feom the original weight of the car which may have been closer to or more than the 1200-1300 kg mark? Just guessing. What about the glorious sound of that incredible flat six engine? I don't believe any Porsche should be featured without one of the most important aspects of the car that made it an icon..... that beautiful sounding and performing air-cooled flat six!! But thanks for sharing a well made interesting video!

Finally, some minimalism. Sometimes I feel like there's hope for lightweight, "If it doesn't need it to in order to run, it's not here" type cars. That's what makes ATV's so great. Unfortunately, ATV riders seem to be over-ambitious in their technique.

Great attitude to evolution and development of a personal 911, Now, where can I get those Kevlar panels he speaks of? Its a wonderful expression of a 911 ethos, I've a '76 911 2.7 which hasn't been on the road for years. I will need a full restoration and rebuild always made easier by ditching the old and bringing in the new, would like to efi the engine too. Lighter and more power, He's damn near current 911 power to weight ratio's

Also if you're interested to see what a person can do in their garage, Google "sv650 carbon fibre tank zoran". That follows the production of a carbon fibre motorcycle fuel tank. Cost of materials on that one was $350 (USD), and about 100 hours spent over 10 months. That includes making the plug, mould, and final part plus attaching fittings etc. It's not a quick process, but isn't that why they're called projects? To buy a CF tank would cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,800.
@mugget
@mugget 11 жыл бұрын
For the average enthusiast the main "cost" is in time. There's a lot of different methods that could be used, but the most simple is wet layup which anyone with basic fibreglassing skills would be familiar with. Equipment for that is very basic, most DIY'ers would already have most of what they need. I'm not sure about cost on a bumper (I'm a bike guy), but for my supermoto project I estimate about $5-600 (AUD) total cost. But that amount of materials will be enough for every single body panel.

Its still being built. I'm a fluid engineer in the oil and gas industry so I don't have much time to work on it, but when I do, its me and usually nobody else. I'd say 80-20 me-vs-other people.That 20% is machine shop work, or getting taught something by others. Anyone can twist a wrench, that is easy. I degreed my own cams, made some successful how-to video's too. No matter how great you think you are, you will need help. Soon I will be calling Brewed Motorsports to teach me to tune.
@walperstyle
@walperstyle 12 жыл бұрын
when you get higher up the level of car building, there is a time you have to work with others. For my turbo 4 cylinder, I needed a Machine shop to do my bore, hone, and line hone. Getting one-off lightweight Porsche panels requires sophisticated places to do the work for you. The fastest and most elaborate 'tuned' cars on the planet today are done by Teams, not Individuals. AMS, Crawford Performance, GST, ...even Carroll Shelby had a team.I use to think as you did, but reality differs.

Depending on how he did it, it needn't be too expensive. Anyone off the street can buy plain kevlar fabric for £18.00/metre. He may even have made the panels himself, or at the very least you'd expect him to have industry contacts. I'm making my own carbon fibre body panels for a motorbike project, compared to buying the finished parts this is a hell of a lot cheaper.

If he did it on the cheap how you suggest, then I applaud his effort. Even using his contacts to reduce the cost of weaving (if that's what you do), I would call resourceful. Especially considering he could afford to just buy the parts outright. But, on what total cost would you estimate a single bumper (for instance)? Taking into account a number of failed attempts to do it properly and cost of obtaining (renting, I guess) the necessary equipment for an average enthusiast to give it a shot?

YOUR LINK: YOU HAVE NO 911s, Just EV & Tesla junk! Yes, Bugatti = VAG = Porsche = He probably had help from within the company. But he could have done it whenever he wanted! & maybe started years before joining VW? Many have done the same thing long before him (lighten a Porsche), even the Porsche factory did it (maybe not to the same extent) with RS & RSR editions. Vehicle lightness was Colin Chapman's trademark (ie Lotus) although they seem to be moving away from focusing on low-weight.
@DasUhrwerks
@DasUhrwerks 12 жыл бұрын
"Fact is this guy understands what matters most in a car and it ain't weight" Respectfully disagree! He build a 1800Lb stripped out, low weight 911. So he was obviously going for low weight! 99% agree with U on the other points. Gov regulations made cars heavy (like 11 airbags). BUT people also want their gadgets & gizmos, which all add weight. That said, cars happen to be safer now & have more HP, which makes up for the weight. But, I'd rather have light 1970's 911 with a roll cage.
@DasUhrwerks

I'm NOT an "E-car" fan. If I can choose anything, I'd go with some 1960's classics! Not exactly sure what a BEV drivetrain is, but is electric the way of the future?? Who knows? Maybe this time it is (it wasn't in 1901 LOL) since the tech is now there & prices on the tech/batteries continue to go down. I sort of don't care if electric cars are the future, just as long as gas/petrol doesn't go up to $20 a gallon and automakers still make internal combustion engine vehicles.
@DasUhrwerks
@DasUhrwerks 12 жыл бұрын
On paper, 1200hp sounds nice, but can you really get it to the ground? 1/2 of that (600hp) I'm sure would be more than enough and make a better daily driver? Don't get me wrong, i'd still take 1200hp ;) Magnus was on Jay Leno's garage recently and there is a 20min "short film" on Magnus & his work Google "Magnus Walker 911". He does similar things to early 911s. ****(I HAVE NO RELATION/AFFILIATION W/ MAGNUS WALKER, BUT WOULD WILLINGLY GIVE A "NUT", KIDNEY, ETC., IF I CAN!)

YES IT IS. Original/real quote: "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance." - Coco Chanel Often shorted to "Simplicity is Elegance" "Simplicity is elegance in action." Einstein? “Simplicity is the key to brilliance” Einstein “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” Leonardo da Vinci Want me to keep going? The ONLY thing I would change about his 911, an Integrated roll cage (today's drivers R idiots!) & would have left the heater! I think it worth the SLIGHTLY extra weight IMHO
@DasUhrwerks

The Hennessy shares the idea (light weight frame/body and put the biggest engine possible), but CERTAINLY not the price! The Hennessy is $600k-$1.5 million depending on power & options! Can U afford that? The AC/Shelby Cobra, original Viper or Lotus Elise/Exige shares the idea more. A 1960s AC/Shelby Cobra sold for $5995 (about $40,000 in today's money) & they HEAVILY discounted the price because no one was buying them! Although $5k was not cheap, it's in the grasp of the common man!
@DasUhrwerks
@DasUhrwerks 12 жыл бұрын
That's what Lotus is (I mean was). The philosophy of many companies used to be, light/lower weight = speed. But, in addition to government regulations, which add of weight, people are expecting and wanting things like sat-nav and lots of "gizmos" which add weight. For years I've said/believed there's a market for a back to basics, minimal "gizmo"/electronics vehicle. If U want new minimalism, I guess the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ is the closest you can get? Even the Miata has gotten heavy.

964? UMM, maybe a bit....I happen to like the 964 because at least the ugly "DOT" bumpers were covered up. If I had the money to buy a daily driver, I wouldn't mind a 964 (one of the last air-cooled with original body-shell. I'm not crazy about the 993 front end). But he transformed it in to an older style "long hood" 1st gen 911. I see early 1970's Porsche, not 964. Either way, I WANT IT! & he did an amazing job!

I wasn't 100% sure what he meant about how he used his bathtub to get the paint-line perfect, because people screw up painting Fuchs. I'm assuming he submerged them until the black part (ie. painted area) was covered with water, then marked/masked off the raised spokes? "Kudos" for painting them himself, but there are plenty of Fuchs restorers & painting templates readily available. Not to mention Bugatti = VW = Audi = Porsche. Couldn't he get Porsche Classic to restore them? AND FOR FREE?
@DasUhrwerks
@DasUhrwerks 12 жыл бұрын
Didn't think of that, that he may of changed the weight distribution and thus, handling. Then again, the steel body panels he replaced, were replaced with kevlar composite (should be stronger than steel). He also changed the doors, rear "hood" (bonnet for U Brits), windows are thinner and/or plastic now, sound deadening, carpets, even heater removed. So when you get down to it, I don't know if the weight distribution has really changed. But overall, it's definitely lighter & I WANT IT!

He isn't going to, and you aren't going to break your glass ones either. Have you ever tried to break a car window with a hammer? It's actually much much harder than you would imagine. You'd probably have a lot better luck with a ball peen, but that's beside the point. If your car is sinking in a body of water, open the door as soon as possible, before it goes under, or you're gonna have a bad time.

Dan, Seems like your superior intellect would compel you to look at all sides of an argument, but I doubt you will, Prove me wrong, google this and read the MotorTrend article: Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage... So Go Buy an H2/H3 Other than that, what energy use are you referring to exactly? A gasoline motor is much more efficient than any electric motor powered by a battery, it's a matter of physics from energy source to comsumption you fail to understand.

@BBAHUNTER 12 жыл бұрын
So you do not want electric cars. Just search on ecological damage caused by batteries and their production. Not to mention it takes more energy to drive an electric car than a gas car (although the price of gas is fairly well offset by the price of electricity to charge cars). I would recommend the perfect car for the 'treehuggers' would be a three cylinder GEO metro. They are cheap (because they are over 20 years old), get over 40 MPG and actually have enough power to outrun the prius.

Safety regulations. Emission regulations. Warranty costs. Reality is a stone bitch. For true minimalism get a new mass produced Japanese 100 hp 200 Kg sport bike for 10,000 USD. Burns 87 octane unleaded gasoline and has a warranty you'll probably never need to use. How much skill does it take to test the limits of an Ur-Porsche vs. the limits of a bike? As to lightweight sports cars, I've had the great pleasure of hammering a not so light Tesla roadster. I hope to flog an Elise some day.

There are around ten thousand Veyrons on the road. (They've been building around 80 a year + 300 when it was launched. This is not crazy accurate but that's what I could find) Even if it's 20k it does not change the idea that "Heavy vehicles account for more than 10 percent of the nation’s overall oil consumption and about 20 percent of the greenhouse gases emitted by the transportation sector." Out of 250 million passenger vehicles in US your Veyron makes less than 0.002%. You fail at logic.

If you dont like classic/retro cars, thats fair enough, but dont call them stupid because myself and other people respect the appearance of older vehicles, maybe not purely down to aesthetics, but because they represent a time when there was more freedom in driving.

You misunderstand minimalistic design principles. Nobody with a romantic interest in cars would want to soil their own vehicle with a disgusting electric drivetrain. And video mirrors... why ? that would just add weight for absolutely no reason. A smooth underside could add weight and at lower speeds it wouldn't make any noticeable difference. So go away with your narrow minded comment, and take into account different points of view.

When saw a first Bugatti Veyron, I almost yelled that it looks like a damn Skoda Octavia. Surprisingly, I've found out that the chief designer of Bugatti Veyron was the same as for Skoda Octavia, so my eyes still catch the cues. Anywayz this person seems to have some decent taste and he couldn't design Skoda Octavia. I bet he has another title.

Petition /DRIVE to ban Dan Frederiksen. I'm tired of seeing him hijack every comment thread when I want to read what actual auto enthusiasts have to say. Not extreme liberal environmental propaganda against the things we like, constant stream of insults, elitism, ignorance, intolerence and hate. Ban him.

What's wrong with the horse and carriage? If someone finds that fun why is that so wrong? If you dont like it, dont watch their youtube video. It doesn't mean they've destroyed their mind. You are being profoundly intolerant. We get it, this isnt the car for you. That's fine. Doesn't mean it's stupid to the rest of us.

Porsche have created some of the most aerodynamically perfect cars for years, the 962 just to name one. but i suppose that means nothing because you are the almighty knowledgeable one and you know more about ground fx and aerodynamics than a mulit-national car manufacturer.. and next time you attempt to slag off a car, try and be grammatically correct.

"Approaches that don't cost the world". Haha, yeah like replacing most of the panels with kevlar units? I don't think so :) Anyway, kevlar panels aside, this car has a lovely philosophy behind it I think. I have a nice copy of an RSL, but this film has inspired me to make it even lighter and tighter!

I like the idea and the way it has been done, I wouldn't, however, put my money on that bet. Since most of lightweight parts were put in front the weight balance can be even worse so it could become even more tail-happy than in the original. I'm just guessing though.

"Imagine how sick an 820kg Bugatti would be?" The Veyron engine and gearbox alone weight about 550 Kg. I'd look up what the wheels and tires weigh, but I'm too lazy. How about a 515 Kg Caterham 7 as a semi-realistic alternative to the wonderful but unobtainable Porsche in this great video?

Stupid yahoo answers. To be honest it just makes the percentage and his comment less relavent. Also, 300 was initial projected #. They've been building them since 2005. I don't think there are only 300 veryrons. Maybe 300 of first models which took them 5 years? Anyone find any concrete links?

Wow emphasis on the provocative. As a realist, i find that being provocative gets you noticed, but rarely actually accomplishes the stated objective of changing anyone's mind. However if the TRUE objective is simply to be noticed...well provocative is an excellent choice.

this car is beautiful, but mostly the philosophy behind this project is beautiful. strip out anything not necessary, concentrate on the basics. he is so right, it is a sign of our times, we now aim for a simpler world where only simple, essential and pure objects have space.

When japanese car manufacturers in 80s decided to start a pact where none of their production cars excess 280 bhp, they started to look at weight, body roll, chassis stiffness, general quality of the parts. This is what happened with this porsche. It is a cheap way of increasing performance

beautiful car. I've been scanning the online used car sites for a 1980's porche. I have zero mechanical skills and am overwhelmed at a fixer upper project. But the idea of a stripping down project where then engine and core systems are left intact is intriguing...

Well, from Dan's point of view,, in his own words above, it's all about cars that do not destroy our planet and our health. So, I guess he better consider environmental damage in the production of the electric cars and disposal of them, end to end.

Why? He had a vision how he wanted his car to be and he made it happen. Does the possibility that he MAY not know how to work on cars himself exclude him from having an opinion? From having a desire to drive something that expresses him?

The weight and fun seem to be inversely proportional in that equation... Bikes Rock! But there's still no real reason there can't be modern four wheeled vehicles with similar power to weight. And through the twisties, four would be quicker...

Imagine how sick an 820kg Bugatti would be? Why is it that most performance car fans love lightweight cars, but few manufacturers actually build them? Listening to focus groups and designing by committee makes bloated piles of... Veyron.
