Just had a JCM 900 / 4100 model a couple months ago. No matter what I did to the dials, I couldn't get a good sound out of it at all when I cranked it up. I'm wondering if the tubes were failing? Anyways, I ended up selling it and buying an EVH 5150 Iconic, and I love this new head....Heading to band practice tonight to try it out and crank it.

You forgot to mention the pentode/triode switch on the back of the amp. Similar to the high/low switch on the JCM 900. In pentode mode you have the full 120 watts and all the headroom. In triode mode it's 60 watts and you reach much sooner tube saturation which thickens the sound and shifts it more to the mid-range. The manual wrongly says 100 and 50 watts, but since it is a 120 watts amp, I assume that it is 120 and 60.

Bugeras are great value for the money! The bad reputation is mostly the older pre-infinium. I got 2 of them. I love them, never had any problems and the older one is 6 years old and gigged with a lot. The new one is a 1960 that I bought after your review. The tube pulling and mixing is awesome. You can get 1960,1990 & 6262 for the price of one marshall. Just something to consider.

One of the issues I've come across with the pre infinium amps is that the biasing information in their manuals was completely wrong. At best they will sound bad, at worst they'll blow up. I biased one of the 6260s for one of my friends who simply used the test point on the chassis and set it according to the manual. I measured the plate voltage and used an octal bias probe and his dissipation was WAAAAAY over 70% probably close to 100%. The fact that he played it like that for weeks and it didn't burst into flames is a miracle. If they were biasing them like that from the factory... then yeah, it would be more shocking if they DIDN'T catch fire. The important takeaway is if you buy a pre infinium model check the bias before you do anything. It's probably far hotter than it should be.
@Nightwinflyer Жыл бұрын

@@Nightwinflyer there's still a lot of pre infinium models floating around. I see a lot of them getting incorrectly listed as infinium because it's a buzz word with respect to bugera. The dead giveaway is if it has blue pilot lights it's pre infinium, amber and it's infinium.

I have both the 1990 and the 6262. I actually like the Crunch channel on the 6262 better, especially with the bright switch on. Bright Marshall crunch like an old modified Plexi. And of course the lead channel on a 6262, being based on the 5150 II, is a monster.

One thing my go-to amp tech says about Marshall heads is that they are very overbuilt, always have been...they can take a lot of abuse before they fail & stop working. It applies to the overall design, choice/tolerance of components, quality of construction, etc. Other makers may have some similar design elements, but they usually cut costs & quality is not the same. One thing I also hear is that Mesa amps are so complex, they are much harder to debug & fix than a Marshall...yes they are good & have tons of features, but there is a trade-off.

I don't have any kind of computer stuff, I'm strictly talking about playing it in the room. Do you ever use something like a captor x or an OX box, and if so, what is your recommendation for someone just wanting to experiment with attenuation? Thank you for what you do.

@@EugeValovirta230V Thanks, man. I ended up getting a PS1 because it's inexpensive. It makes a huge difference in the DSL100 being able to crank the master. With the Invective, where all the balls seem to be at the top end of the channel volume, it's not really needed (for what I do, anyway). I did notice it sucked some of the low end out of both amps, and I had to bump up the resonance to get it back to what I like. In any event, thank you for the suggestion, and for what you do.

My brother's Marshall JCM900 I tried sounded the best with KT88 power tubes... but that's my own taste! To not overload the transformers I used only two of them istead of four. Otherwise, there are no clipping diodes inside the JCM900 but it has many OP-Amps. So I guess, the Bugera is constructed the same. That's why I still prefer the JCM800 much more.

I'm with you on that reverb thing. I always hate reverb on amps. It always sounds fake to me. Sometimes (but not very often) it'll sound acceptable on clean sounds if I don't dial in too much. I'd *_much_* rather have a good digital reverb pedal in the effects loop. That gives me options so I'm not stuck with the sound that was decided on by some committee of electronics engineers at the amp factory. As to Bugera reliability, I've never owned or even played one, but from what I've seen here and there on forums and message boards they're either total crap or absolute tanks. And the simpler models like the 1990 and 1960 are more likely to be tanks than crap. Also, long-time users usually like the Infinium feature, saying that it really does extend power amp tube life by quite a bit. Of course, it's also just one more thing to go wrong...
