For all we know, keeping the Iris closed is actually detrimental to the gate. The SGC gate seems to be the only one that has one. It is also the only gate without a DHD, wich caused ocassional issues. Like that time Teal'c finally killed Tanith. The danger of death to the vortex is actually extremely low. You would propably have to run up the ramp and jump into it just to have a shot at dying. And most people wait at the foot of the ramp, wich is as long as the vortex and ends half a person lower.

@@christopherg2347 Atlantis has a gate shield that is functionally identical to the sgc iris, so technically the earth gate(s) is not the only one with an iris-like device. Id assume the real reason most gates don't have a gate shield is just because having a multitude of shields means anyone using a gate has a high risk of not materializing. No clue how the iris affects the sgc gate though. Also not having a dhd is both a blessing and a curse. Manual dialing takes way longer, but when that one virus took down the stargate network by infecting every dhd, the earth gate remained functional due to using an analog dialing device.

@@deadturret4049 That makes two gates in two galaxies having something like a Iris. The Ancients were at war with the Wraith while it was installed. So they had a incentive to do it regardelss of any side effects. For the Goa'uld having a few random enemies attack through the gate was little issue. They still had air support on the planet. And there was a lot of Assination Potential, forcing all Goa'ulds to travel via ship. Wich were quite slow before Aphophis attack on earth. And against the Wraith, a gate stop would have only called a Hiveship to "bomb you into the stoneage". Plus the Assasination potential again.

The funny thing is that all they really needed to do is get two mechanical arms to grab the sides of the gate and turn it 90 degrees to the side so that it's facing up. Anything that tries to come through would just fall right back down the gate from gravity. Haven’t watched in about 10 years, but got some questions/points: 1) Later on, they try to attack the iris. But how would an enemy of Earth ever even know the iris existed in the first place? 2) Say they’re attacking the iris trying to destroy it… couldn’t they disconnect the gate and hover it 100 feet down in some kind of deep water (whether a local lake or man made hole in the ground with water in it) so that anything that comes through drowns? 3) Did they close the iris to ANY unrecognized connection? If so… weren’t they bothered by possibly killing friendly visitors looking to establish contact?
@DoctorAllanGrey
@DoctorAllanGrey 6 ай бұрын
1) this is addressed later on with multiple enemies of the Tau'ri realizing they have a Metal Iris protecting the gate and attacking it using particle beams or other methods of overloading the gate. 2) yeah but also moving the gate out of the SGC is a huge pain and wouldn't have worked against say, Anubis' weapon which causes the gate to explode in a giant thermonuclear reaction thanks to the naqueda. 3) yes, they closed the Iris to any unrecognized connection, thus potentially killing friendly visitors looking to establish contact. This is the centerpiece point of an episode early on. Those visitors however, didn't turn out to be too friendly though.

@Mikkel The Red. The problem is a stargate activation is meant to be a powerful blast that only becomes under control when the wormhole stabilizes. In the last season an Ori mothership was destroyed by a supergate activating when the blast of a modified nuclear bomb would only scratch their shields. I don't buy the Iris not being destroyed when a gate activates, I think it's something that should be deployed after someone has already dialed in.

Supposedly because the iris is placed so close to the point where the wormhole forms so that it doesn't allow the "kawoosh" to form. It is mentioned in one of the episodes but I'm not sure which. Perhaps the one where the iris was first used. Maybe even this episode.
@Xershade
@Xershade 5 жыл бұрын
It would if the Iris was partially closed/open. The basic principle is it stops the gate from materializing anything that includes the vortex. They did this in 100 days when the gate got buried while active. Carter made a laser to melt a small hole in the barrier, then re-dialed the gate and the vortex did the rest from there. The vortex only needs a tiny space to start forming, otherwise it's suppressed/destroyed like anything else that tries to come out of the gate.

Not sure its ever explained but visually if you were to go around to the back of the gate, the event horizon is ever so slightly see through, that could be concluded that its not a useable side. The evidence that I have for why its probably dangerous to use the back of the gate is because we never see anyone walk through it the entire franchise, the unspoken reason is because it probably means death. Yeah it's because they over used it, like ALOT in the first and second season, I'm told around the third season, they called all the "gate techs" in and filmed a bunch of stock footage for later use. hands typing on keyboards, flipping switches, etc. Also the production team over the years spent like a millions dollars making all the dialing computer/mainframe stuff actually work. In short, you could type in any addres, and the rack and pinion drive along with an electronic eye that's in the gate, will spin to whatever symbols you picked and the entire gate prop will work like it should, and the computer will show the proper animations and everything and all this will be in sync with one another, the gate lights up, the light that replicates the puddle shimmer comes on, everything. Basically the stargate prop and control room is one gigantic toy that actually works, i mean minus actually creating wormholes.

How does the vortex open with the iris? If anything goes through then the gate is open. For the gate to open the vortex would need to be created and that should vaporise the iris which it doesn't. Even if possible, if jaffa or whatever are being sent though then there should be a wet puddle of body bits forming under the grating of the gate platform as the "bug" remains slide off the back of the iris and drip down. I understood the iris acted as a barrier to the gate opening. An unauthorised opening would see the iris closing over the active gate to prevent anything materialising properly on the SGC side. Once the gate closed a connection couldn't be reestablished from the other side as the gate system would register the Earth gate as closed (ignoring the second gate) so no thumping dramas. That also means the SGC has a window to open their gate to somewhere else as regardless of how long it takes them to dial out, with the iris in place no one can dial in while they're dialing.

The iris portal can be created without the vaporising kadosh and the gate is too close for that to from so just the portal itself forms and mater itself can't form but energy is still shot through, this is a point where they need to deal with a cave in blocking the gate and so use a laser and basically cut a small gap and then redial so the kadosh shoots out and vaporises, In short the iris is just in front of the portal enough to stop the vapoursing blast but not in it so it gets destroyed by the forming portal( admitilly thus is probably the wrong noise since the whole point of the iris is it is so close to the gate matter can't form but that is the point of the radiation team,) Atlantis had a much better noise and thing with the shield
