Crunch Crunch it’s ok. I have a better job now that I enjoy much more. I still love the people I worked with and still like the bears but that day changed how I felt about my job within seconds. I actually loved my job (most of the time) but after that, it stops becoming a fun place to work.

I worked at a build a bear in Canada. Luckily I never had to deal with the people waiting in line. I only stuffed the bears so the people were usually just relieved that they could go home by the time they got to me.

To be fair, it's not always paid promotion for the news to do something like that. I work at a library and on the day of the eclipse, we were giving away eclipse glasses. We had a total of 500 glasses, 2 per family. And we told the Patrons who visited within the week prior. Except someone in the local news got ahold of the fact we had glasses too. All the sudden, the print newspaper, the local radio stations and the local news were telling people we had unlimited amounts of the glasses. When we opened, the line wrapped around the library twice. Within about an hour, all the glasses were gone. People came from over an hour away, only for us to turn them away. I couldn't do my job because I did nothing but answer the phone all day to tell them we didn't have glasses, half of the people were screaming at the top of their lungs on the phone once I did. People were pissed, telling us how unprofessional we were and how we shouldn't have advertised in the news if we didn't have enough glasses. Except we never did. We AVOIDED telling the local news for this exact reason. We didn't even have it posted on our website. The media basically screwed us over.

Supposedly... there were 23,000 people in all that went. Since there wasn’t room, people sat outside for HOURS. Getting sunburns, and not getting any water or food. Overall people got scammed, and such.

You know, if your child is like, three or under (maybe even four), you could take them down to any dollar store, or plush toy store, and get them a stuffed animal there (even buy an outfit meant for a baby doll, etc). Your child will be just as happy and won't know the difference, and likely won't even remember the experience at that age anyway. Heck, I was happy with Goodwill toys when I was little. Buy a plush, dress it up, boom!

I liked the grown adults yelling at the store employees, as if it was the employees' fault that so many people were there. And I saw some of those families had like 5 children with them. You think MAYBE the families who brought every kid with them, who probably didn't already have a bear picked out, contributed to the lengthy wait time? Either way, the poor store employees aren't to blame for a thousand people showing up for this poorly thought-out promotion, stop yelling at them. And like Chad said... you could just leave. So I live on the west coast, and worked in a store RIGHT ACROSS FROM A BUILD-A-BEAR. OMG. These people were crazy. Even though the promotion was cancelled on the website, the local stores continued on with it (because the line started forming 5hrs before they even opened.) It got to the point where we (an unrelated store) were bringing the b.a.b employees juice and fruit to keep their blood sugar up. Because they never got a moment of rest.

Having worked at a local television station for several years, I can give you a theory as to why this was covered by stations. Increasingly, segments being put into local news broadcasts are being driven by what’s doing well on social media, particularly a station’s Facebook page or what the station’s ownership has found to be a “talker” online. This is a classic example of something that was a hot topic and was likely written up by dozens and dozens of TV station web departments to post on their websites and social platforms and it probably got a lot of shares on Facebook and Twitter and clicks on their website. Since it probably did get high levels of engagement, the tv producer of that newscast likely has to include an item or two that is “doing well” on social media (aka: What’s Trending or other synonyms for the segment) for the station and place it in their show. From the clips you showed, it felt very much like a quick 20-30 second segment to fill a slot in their 22-minute newscast. For example: our TV station, for some reason, did an article on the NES Classic, purely because it was a hot topic the day it was announced and the story “did well” on social media that day and got lots of engagement so that story also ended up in the newscast. So, to your point, in my opinion and experience, it’s highly unlikely Build-A-Bear paid tv stations for exposure. The promotion itself was the exposure, so the company just had to wait for it to get hot on social media and online, and eventually, local tv stations seeking clicks on their websites/social pages will pick it up share it on their platforms, and then it’ll end up in a broadcast as a “trending” item. Is this news? Eh, having worked in tv... the definition of what is “news” in regards to a tv newscast is becoming grey because of the internet. Stories that seem to interest people online (clicks, shares) are now having to be shoehorned into newscasts, even if something that could be newsworthy is booted, all because a station can use the story as a promotion for their own website (e.g: a story like this would’ve been written at my station to end with, “and keep up with the latest trending news by liking our Facebook page at WXYZ TV ... our Facebook fans heard about this story first so be sure to stay in the know!”) Just wanted to share that insight from years in this field... love your stuff, Chad!

I interned at Build A Bear. It’s headquarters is in St. Louis and it’s a nice place. But from my three months there, I got a lot of insight to the madness of the marketing and of team. They were ran by a lot of women who would bicker and argue. Everything was rushed and there were a lot of tears. Literally tears. Many women cried when they didn’t get their way. Departments didn’t communicate with each other and wouldn’t take each other seriously which caused a lot of unnecessary headache. Plus everyone said that “we make toy bears, how serious can it get?”. But hey you could wear jeans everyday and bring your dog to work too. 🐻

If I pulled up to the mall and saw that line, I would immediately turn around. Yeah, my kid would probably be upset and throw a tantrum, but it would last like 15 minutes tops, as opposed to standing in line all day listening to them whine the entire time.
