The only modification I think I would make is positioning the filter so it does not take the overspray directly. You will be using a lot of filters due to it being painted rather than just handling the fumes. Great video as always! I think I might make something similar for my STL printer, as it makes a hell of a stink when it is running and I can just add a plexiglass door to the front.

Made a spray booth a few years ago and plan on adding a fan blower to it, been doing some research and some people recommend centrifuge furnace blowers with the motor on the outside to prevent it from creating sparks and catching fire. Considering the fact that it has a filter which stops most of the paint I wonder if it’s necessary to have an fan with exterior motor.
@EricStrebel2 жыл бұрын
Nope from what I can see the filter stops all paint particles, some of the fumes of course still escape through the event but I doubt that would be enough to cause any sort of an ignition. I've never had any sort of an issue.
@TheIcemanModdeler2 жыл бұрын
@@EricStrebel Yep, i mostly paint with acrylics anyway and they're water based so it's virtually zero chance, I do have a few paints like chromes that are alcohol based and lacquers that have the flame logo on them meaning they're flammable but the amount of solvent in the paint and going through an airbrush is pretty low so it's a small chance. A higher risk is with spray paint as those also have aerosol in them, plan on using them outside.

I spray some pretty flammable urethanes some times, can't see having an issue. Also, it's not like at a factory where it's 24 -7 paint fumes

Awesome job, I am seriously considering building one. Just one question, is that fan safe to use with flammable fumes and such? I've heard some fans can cause explosions depending on how the motor is wired. Please get back to me if you could.
@EricStrebel4 жыл бұрын
It's totally safe in my opinion, the volume of fumes going to that motor is so low for someone like you and I as a hobbyist or very limited use I don't see any issue.

I paused the video and saw that it had some kind of paper lip on it but couldn't make out if/how that came into play. How Eric, I've been searching for "How To" build a spray booth, and came across your build and KZbin Channel. I too came across the VentWorks plans, and like the design. I plan to make a few modifications for my needs. QUESTION: How is the foam core holding up, and also the vent fan solution your using? I'm trying to decide on whether to go with foam core or 1/2" plywood. Also, I notice a lot of other topics of interest, on your channel, so I became a subscriber.

Is there a way to build a spray booth that does not vent to the outside? Like maybe a secondary filter after the fan. (So a filter before and after the fan, and you just vent to the room)

I think you could do something like that depending on what you're spraying. I have seen people using water based acrylic paint do that, since they are only worried about particles, not solvent fumes.

This fan is (i believe) the same type used in a furnace. The fan is enclosed and will not cause any of the flammable paints to spark/explode. So no worries there.
@PKWModelwerx4 жыл бұрын
A furnace blower, such as the one recommended by VentWorks, has the motor and brushes located outside the airstream. This reduces explosion risk. If the fan Eric used has a brushless motor that reduces spark risk, but such fans typically don’t move the air that a furnace blower moves, and there are still short circuit spark and overheating risks which could cause an explosion. Although that’s unlikely. Moving a lot of air out of the booth ensures the lower explosive limit of the paint is not exceeded, eliminating explosion risk as well. I did a recent video about spray booth explosion risk, and providing tables and other data so that you can determine the risk associated with your booth plan, as well as the paint and spray can propellants you use. Check it out if you want more data or need a soporific.

depends what I am spraying, with rattle cans, no need, fan is very powerful, smell is almost non existent, if I am spraying two part urethane, then I wear a mask just because the material is so nasty.

@@EricStrebel thanks for the reply. I want to get into airbrushing and modelling, but since this Covid-19 pandemic it's hard to get my hands on a respirator for painting. I can get ones from China but again it's from China and our safety standards are different, even though some claim to be NIOSH certified, I don't trust it. My plans are to use tamiya acrylic paints so not to sure if a respirator is required with a booth. I must say out of the handful of videos I've seen in regards to building my own spray booth, yours is top of the list

@@Well_This_Guy_Says I just got into airbrushing myself. Its the N95 masks that are hard to find. Which wont do you any good anyway. You want a P100 mask for paints. However this is over kill for acrylic paint. I notice i have a cough after spraying acrylic paints so i want to build something like this to vent everything out my window. I'm wondering if i can lay the tube into a tub of water and vent into the water. This way i don't need go keep opening and closing my window, with my locks its a pain. I do have a massive HEPA filter running next to where I airbrush but apparently that's not good enough.

@@respond_code3 I been able to find N95 masks, prices are high though, I spent 180$ on 20 of them...The other day I was able to find a 3M spray paint respirator 6300 series with extra filters, yes it might be overkill for using acrylics, but better safe than sorry and I know I'll end up getting into using other types of paint.
