I still remember this vlogger when I was quite young and dreamed of having an electric guitar and pedals, I imitate what he does but I don't follow the parts themselves because I don't have enough knowledge of electronics. Now that I'm 24 years old, I already know something and I have my own electric guitar, I don't even have a guitar pedal or guitar amplifier, I came back to this vlogger now because I know he can be used to make my own guitar pedal, thanks for your videos 😍

Hi! this dirt pedal actually works, I put it inside my guitar as a built in pedal, and I add a modiffication on your diagram. I put an 50k potentiomometer between 3.3k ohm resistor (that connects to the battery) and into the circuit. I got it like an expression pedal, when i on the pedal and the pot is into the zero i just got a clean boosted cignal, and when i add up to 5 it gets a little dirty, and when it goes to ten i got the distorted cignal. by the way thanks body

Hi DIY Pedals, Ah yes, the birds nest style works good for minimal component builds, saves on perf board, and, is a quick way to prototype a circuit. I look forward to making quite a few of your pedal projects. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'll go to your site and price PCB kits, etc.. Good job. Be good, C.

I'm looking for a sound that's like a fuzz/distortion, but without the harsh buzzing sound, -so all the sustain/sensitivity, the rich overtones, and the interference or growl when two or more notes are played together. But without that ennervating, clipping, angle grinder-ish sound. David Gilmore from Pink Floyd gets that sound right sometimes (e.g. on Wish you were here and The wall). Here is an example from a Norwegian guitar god, -especially towards the end: Øystein Sunde - Fenderslåtten Would making a device that could do that be possible to do as a DIY project? I know he used a 1964 Stratocaster, two different limiters (Tandberg -11 and an Egil Andersen -limiter, probably home made), Vox fuzz and wah-wah to a Vox AC 30 top boost amp. Also, would it be possible to make a little guitar amp with a strong pre-amp fed into one EL84 power tube and reduce the volume back to a pre-amp level after the EL 84 has been taken to its max or near max level, for that exquisite overdrive that can only be achieved with a power stage tube? (Yes, I know it may sound absurd, but such is the passion of the quest for the ideal sound). So- 1. preamp => 2.power amp => 3.reduce back to pre-amp level? Or would a simple, regular potentiometer burn up when fed a 5-6 watt signal? I would be ecstatic if you know the answers to these admittedly unusual questions, but you seem to be good at these things, so I had to ask. Best regards, F.F.

search my channel for my offboard wiring tutorial (true bypass wiring). For the volume pot, make the connections as per original schematic, and add the volume pot on the output. Not sure how loud your output will be with the clipping diodes in there though.

+DaftSmurf Any diode will work, even a 1n4148 silicon diode you can pick up for 5 cents. They will all sound different (slightly) and effect the output level depending on the forward voltage drop of the diode. Bat41 is another alternative, or any germanium diode really like a D9B or D9E (i have them in my webstore for 25c-35c each).
@badfender223
@badfender223 8 жыл бұрын
+DaftSmurf The other guys are right - any diode will probably work, but the 1N34 is a Germanium instead of Silicon - which means it responds to much smaller signals and is more sensitive (giving a more organic overdrive). Look around in junk shops and trash piles for broken solid state radios. The original use for the IN34 and it's Germanium counterparts was as a detector diode in radio receivers, so you'll likely run into a couple in some discarded devices - old radios also make good organ donors for things like battery snaps and small speakers. I have several plastic bins full of junk that come in handy when I don't want to sink a lot of money into an effect I'm building, but you'll need to test the components to make sure they're good - a diode should read low ohms in one direction and high ohms in the other. The beauty of custom building is to accept that every now and then something you build will be a complete disaster and it won't work. :)

Stefano Pulici Hey stefano. The 10 min d+b's i have built have had a slightly higher volume then unity in dirt mode and about 2x 3x times in boost mode. You could try changing the diodes, or removing one from the switch, you will get less dirt but more volume output.

Hi johnny. This effect should be distorted with pretty much any diode. Something with low forward voltage (0.6v) will sound more distorted with lower output volume. The 'dirt' is subtle though but you should check for errors all the same.

green caps wont make any difference. The dirt is subtle you may not be hearing it through your amp. Try putting a booster in front of it or any volume increasing pedal (overdrive etc) and hit it hard. Not a solution to your problem but this effect loves a strong signal on the input.

How do people come up with these circuits? How can I make my own, without having to look on the internet for schematics? I mention that this October I will start my first year in university and I will study electronics.
@danielallan5058
@danielallan5058 8 жыл бұрын
a lot of the basic Ideas are culled from existing schematics..some people might want a tonebender say but with the tonestack from a big muff,or they use the original schematic but swap filter capacitors for different values or change transistor types for modern equivalents that are easy to find...I think if you want to play around with a circuit you should get into etching your own pcbs,then use ic conecters to change components,also you can just use a breadboard with it if you want to add more complicated circuits to the original board (stuff like pre and post boosters,different tone stacks etc!...my advice would be to getting familiar with circuits like the fuzz face,tonbender and big muff..also treable boosters and work from there.

+C Liviu I really did find etching my own pcbs and using ic connectors to socket components made things so much easier to play about with circuits,I have permanent test boards set up, one for a fuzz face another for a big muff etc so I can just change things to hear what's worth doing when I see a schematic I want to try (there's about 100 different variations of the big muff alone,so there's plenty to keep busy with :-).., i know some people just use breadboards but I think its much better to see everything on the pcb as it is and just replace things when you want to try a different cap,diode or transistor etc!. more importantly i think it's more of an enjoyable process then breadboarding.... anyway it's goid to hear your picking it up and enjoying it man,that's the main reason for having a go,plues it's not a bad feeling at the end when you know you've made a really cool sounding pedal :-)

I have all the components right transistors, resistors, capacitors, and even tried a lot of diode but still its sounds like clean just like a bypass, anyone can help me pleaseeeee

Check orientation of the diode and transistor, check values of components, check connectivity of the leads of the components etc. There is an error, if you used the same components as me and followed the tutorial correctly this effect will work.

Yep you still want to check connectivity. Has to be an error somewhere, trust me, myself and many others have built this circuit hundreds of times. Hope you get it working!

what is an alternative to 2N5087?
@andrewjaster39
@andrewjaster39 8 жыл бұрын
Try 2n3904, PN100, BC549C, or 2N222A. Keep in mind, the 2n5087 is a general purpose low noise high gain PNP transistor. So almost any general purpose PNP transistor should work, some will just be noisier than others. I guess you get what you pay for :)

Hi DIY GP, I just subbed and will be watching a lot of your videos. Checked you out in the past, then got really busy, glad to be back. I'm getting pretty good at electronics and these look to be rather simple builds. Check out Runoffgroove.com and build yourself a 1/2 watt Ruby guitar practice amp, clean your board of flux, score between the J-FET pins, and it will rock. I found stray voltage from the flux impaired performance, a little tip. It uses an MPF-102 J-FET and a LM386 Audio Op-Amp, pretty easy, bread board first then build on perf board. Cool channel, glad I found it again. Be good, C.

Can I use this pedal with bass guitar??
@DiyguitarpedalsAu
@DiyguitarpedalsAu 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, just play around with the input and output caps (increasing there size will allow more bass from your guitar signal into the circuit). Cheers

Not familiar with those, I would stick with NPN high gain darlington (mpsa's, mpsa13, mpsa18, etc)

The putty-assembled circuit was kind of cute, but for God's sake, at least give us sound advice on soldering. Each lead should be heated BEFORE the solder comes anywhere near. The solder should be applied to the leads, NOT the iron. Summary of heat transfer (iron --> leads ----> solder) The joints you are instructing us to make, are call "cold solder joints" because the leads were not heated properly. Instead, a blob of solder, metled by the iron, is just sitting on top. This means an unreliable electrical connection. These "cold joints" can be hard to troubleshoot because they look fine. The cold joint is also much more likely to pop loose, considering this if for a stomp box I'd say that's a real concern. And where were you going to house this? How were you going to isolate the hot leads from the chassis? Or let me guess, your chassis is also putty.

I've never built a guitar pedal. I've only soldered a couple of things in my life. I watched this video once, ordered my parts, and then watched it a second time. I then laid out all my parts and soldered them together, without referring back to the video one time. So, I guess chromespherecom did a good job in the video. Otherwise I would have botched it. If you can't follow these videos, you might need to look for a different hobby, or anything else to keep you occupied. Thanks chromespherecom, mine sounded really good. I hooked it up with a bypass switch (I guess that's what you call it), in front of a small amp circuit my neighbor built me in a cigar box. If the switch is one way, I get a clean sound, if it's the other way I get a dirt sound. I'm going to try to hook up a pot in a couple of days, so I can adjust the clipping? Is that correct? Would a 10k pot be okay for that?

+DIY Guitar Pedals can i replace the 2N3904 with a 2N3906 as i got 2N3906 by mistake or any other substitue?
@DiyguitarpedalsAu

+Arnavpunit Jain Definitely cant use 2n3906 that's PNP not NPN. Other NPN's may work, perhaps do some research for "2n3904 substitute" someone would have already asked that question on the pedal forums no doubt. Cheers
