// ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Back to my woodworking on youtube basics. For this project I took my time, not only with the building, but with the filming as well. As for the piece, it is a mid century modern style hall table made from walnut. Enjoy :)

This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. kzbin.infoUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.

I would be really interested in seeing a video where you show us more of the design process and what it looks like when you're making your next piece. Do you scout the hardwood store to see what is in stock, get inspired? Do you make any scale models? Sketches or 3d software? Do you consider limitations you might have due to your own abilities or available tools? Thanks, and always great work!

First off, it looks great! Nice work. You build some amazing stuff and are so meticulous and conscientious while you're building. I have two questions for you and I don't want them to seem in a negative light in anyways. Just some curiosities I had while watching. I'm curious if the draw ever gets hard to open with the wood expansion/contraction rates with temp/humidity because it looks like such a tight fit or if because it's ply wood, you don't run into that issue at all. Also, I'm curious about pulling the draw out too far. There's plenty of ways to solve this. I'm just wondering if it was an over site or a non issue for this project? Thanks in advance. Love the channel and the modern maker podcast!
@Foureyes.Furniture
@Foureyes.Furniture 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Marc...hard to answer since I haven't lived with it long enough yet...but the case (other than the top) and the drawer box (other than the front) are all plywood. So the only potentially troublesome piece would be the drawer front. But there is enough wiggle room to allow for some expansion. As for stopping it from coming out...I didn't have time for the video. But I'm going to probably just put a little screw or something on the underside to keep a kid from being able to completely pull it out. It's a drawer that I just keep guitar strings and string changing tools in...so it rarely gets opened. BTW, it's in my hallway under my guitars :)

I think the thing I enjoy most about your videos, aside from the really clean and modern pieces you make, has got to be how deliberate everything is. Given the strength of the drawer box, to prevent racking, and it's intended use as a hall table, screws work well enough, so no complaints there. It's just the plugs that annoy me. I mean i agree they look fine from 2+ feet away which to be honest is how far away i'd normally be, and that any non-wood worker probably won't ever notice them or even dislike them, but since I know i plugged the screw holes i can never unsee the plugs.

How long would it take to make this with handtools only? With the skill level of Chris? I have 0.0% woodworking experience. I'm just curious because I've always had some interest in it but I don't have a spare room or garage to work in. I thought about using a corner of my living room, using plastic to make it so that dust can't leave the small area. Is that realistic? Or do would you say, "just don't"? Again, 0% experience, but I do have experience with 3D software and drawing. If I look at the videos I would think it's possible. I could be wrong!

Nice work as always! One question, are you worried that glueing the top to the base won’t allow for expansion of the top? Maybe humidity doesn’t play a factor too much in ca, but still curious none the less. Thanks and keep up the good work!!
@Foureyes.Furniture
@Foureyes.Furniture 6 жыл бұрын
I think it'll be fine. Finished, in doors in Southern California...I haven't had any wood expansion issues. For this one, I cut the slots for the dominos wider in the underside of the top...so that would leave a little wiggle room for the top to expand across it's width...which is pretty much the only area of possible concern for a piece like this.

I really love the style of your videos and your approach to wood working. Meticulous, methodical, and passionate. Your videos are incredibly soothing to watch and remind me that woodworking shouldn't be rushed. Thank you for making "working with your hands" cool again.

I just love all the furniture you make and how you make everything. Your explanations and comments are superb. I notice that you rarely use screws to strengthen joins... is there a reason for this? [I hope this isn't a silly question]

Thanks Michael...I just use them where the make sense. On something like the leg joint (half-lap) There is a lot of glue surface to bond the pieces together. Wood glue is amazingly strong...And these joints aren't going to be under a ton of stress...so I just do whatever makes sense without over doing things.

Niiiiiiice :D I agree with you on the tables names...ahah in portuguese it's around the same lack of originality. A coffee table, for us, is a table that actually is inside a coffee shop - mesa de café. That one typically in front of the sofas is called mesa de centro - center table. Anyhow, they all end up having the word table or the word's root on the name. For that design of your workpiece, I would call it consola, if it is in the hall, or maybe aparador if it is in the dinning room. Not mesa of something, for this case. x) It doesn't really matter. It does look beautiful and that's what matters.

Hey Cris...exactly. A Table by any other name... I guess the guy who named them all was just a real "nuts and bolts" literal person. I actually think "Center Table" is slightly more descriptive than "Coffee Table." I'd be intersted to know how Coffee claimed that one. Seems like it could have just as easily been a Tea Table, or Water Table, or if it was me in Highschool...a Mountain Dew Table :)

Here in Brazil, we are calling coffe tables narrow tables - even shelfs - or bancadas we put in the kitchen for quick meals (breakfast or evening coffe) or having people talking to us while cooking

For this style it is just one side tapered. I have done multiple sides though...on the one legged table I did all four
