This is exactly how I got started with a home lab. Early in my career, I gathered a bunch of spare hardware I had lying around, put Linux on it, and ran it headless for years. I am doing this right now. I have a intel i7-4770k , 32gb of 1866 ddr3 and a z87 motherboard. I added a sas 3 card in IT mode and picked up 5 10tb arsenal sas drives for $143 each. I am currently in the process of transferring the content from my heap of random hard drives to the server. It takes a long time. After a lot of deliberation and playing with proxmox, ubuntu server, truenas and unraid on an older laptop, I settled on unraid. Once my data is transferred, I will be clearing off the good hard drives I have left over and adding them to the array. I went with sas because I wanted something forward compatible in case my home server really takes off and requires an upgrade. I really appreciate your guides they have been very helpful.

I'm doing something similar, though my hardware is a bit older. I'm cobbling together an Intel Core i7-5775C on a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming GT with 16GB of DDR3-2400, hooking the Z97 chipset's six SATA ports up to a matching number of Seagate Ironwolf 8TB NAS drives, and then running Proxmox on top. Within Proxmox I'll be running OPNSense for internal networking, TrueNAS Scale (yes I know it can also function as a hypervisor in place of Proxmox) with the Intel SATA controller passed through and the NAS drives in RAIDZ2, a Plex container that I'll try to pass the Iris Pro 6200 iGPU through to so I can get hardware encoding and HDR tonemapping working without a dedicated GPU, and it'll also run a bunch of game servers for me and my friends. This is my first serious foray into trying to have a dedicated machine running on the regular after I started tinkering around with this stuff on an i7-3770 a couple of years ago. It's not ideal and hardly the most capable platform in the world, but I didn't want to rush out to buy heaps of hardware beyond the NAS drives so I am limited by what I have on hand, and I don't want to run more than one box because electricity is expensive and I don't have a ton of room in the apartment I live in.

@@wayland7150 The board I'm using has a second SATA controller with two ports, which I'll have an SSD plugged into for Proxmox to boot off of. I can add another mechanical drive as well if I need to. Fair point on RAM but it's all I have right now. I might swap the kit out for a higher capacity, lower speed kit in future just because I don't think my odds of finding a set that matches mine these days are high.

I appreciate you are showing this setup with Windows; a lot of new users into the NAS space will just want to set aside their old gear for this and might not be comfortable installing / reconfiguring everything with TrueNAS, unraid, or similar linux distros. I can people doing that once they want to get more out of their systems, but just setting up a basic NAS on windows is most home enthusiasts first steps I feel like.

The only drawback about using a gaming computer for a server though, is idle power consumption. If the hardware is modern enough, it'll have the low power C-states for when it's idle, but if you go back six or more years, a lot of these things will run full tilt even when idle. Especially if you use older AMD processors.

The ultra-low idle power came with Haswell and that's already 9 years old. Having said that, previous generations aren't bad either. My i5-3350p idles at around 8 watts.

2 years later I am looking for a space efficient way to rackmount and then virtualize my current pc. This case seems to be still in production as a Chenbro RM24100. But I was struggeling to find a decent ATX power supply with front to back airflow. The tip to use a SFX-Power supply instead saved me on going the route to a 2U Server! You might have saved me 2U here, thanks!

The best way to get started with an x86 home server is to buy a ~5 year old ebay laptop (or dig your old laptop out of the closet), something old enough to be cheap but new enough to be fairly powerful. You have built-in KVM, battery backup power, gigabit network port, several USB ports, & WiFi. An energy efficient but still moderately powerful CPU, with much quieter fans than a rack server. Typically, they have hardware virtualization support you can enable in BIOS. A lightweight but viable GPU, saving you from the scalper prices. Often a pair of SSD bays, or an SSD bay and NVME drive slot. 8 GB to 16GB of RAM. Used business grade laptops generally have sturdier build quality, more IO, and room for a second drive. Buying a $200 used ebay laptop is going to be cheaper and more performant than adding all that aftermarket to a Pi or other SBC, assuming you can even find a Pi for sale, and way quieter and lower energy costs than a rack server, and take way less space than towers. If you want a home cluster, use a baker's bun rack as server rack, and fill the bun trays with laptops.

I did something similar, but my server is in a tower. I'm running Unraid on an AMD Phenom 2 x4 965 with 32GB RAM and 17TB (9TB usable) of space with one parity drive. All packed inside a Cooler Master HAF932 that has been modified to accommodate up to 14 hard drives. :). She's a bit aged, but she does the job very well.

my first two "servers" i got were a pair of socket 478 pentium 4 workstations from a private school near me. ended up running server 2003 R2 on them and learning RRAS, AD DS, and some intermediate networking stuff on there, while being able to set up a PPTP vpn, fileshare, webserver, and a vent server for me and the homies to share games and play "lan only" games together. reduce reuse recycle!

istarusa is the best option for racking desktop hardware. over the past several years I've moved all the computers in my house into rack case, and 5/6 of the cases are from them. the rails are universal, everything's cheap, and they have shorter depth cases which will fit in racks intended for audio gear.

i did this exactly when i started my first home server build on a core2quad q6600 with 8 gb of ddr2 ram and two 4 TB wd purple drives and a 120GB sata ssd. Build it in a tower though instead of a rack mounted chassis. Gave it to a friend after i moved to i7 6700 for my home server which i am still using now. Each time i upgrade my gaming system the old parts become my new server now.

I'm running my old FX-6300 and R9-280 as my server, mostly Syncthing,Borgbackup,Apache,Transmission,Folding at Home and few custom software. Works wonderfully but during hot summer months heat output is bit much, I also have Pi2B running PiHole and I might move essential software to it and leave the FX-6300 based system for winter time FaH based heating and extra backup.

@@wayland7150 FaH is using OpenCL so that uses a GPU but even without GPU running the system still draws around 100W With GPU it uses around double that but 100W continuous is still a lot during summer so that why I'm thinking of the Pi and just dropping FaH when heat is not needed.

With electricity prices skyrocketing lately, I am in need of an embedded ARM or RISC-V system with 10GBe, 4x SATA (For SSDs), 1xHDMI 1080p60, USB 3.0, capable of running a file server, PiHole and Unbound while only consuming less than 10W Idle. Preferrably even less than 5W. I couldn't find something yet. Native I2C would also be nice for reading some sensors or driving a tiny OLED. I am currently running a Raspberry Pi, where I tried to connect a Seagate Barracuda 2TB SSD using an adapter via USB 3.0 (SATA) to it. Read performance is low with 300 MByte/s and write performance is non-existent (3 MByte/s)... At least I can store small files on it's SD-Card share now and it consumes about 3.8 Watts running the above mentioned 3 services. Edit: I am also running a simple Python webserver for an ESP weather station I've made.

If you buy one of those desktop PCs that are sort of fake because they run off a laptop PSU you can build a server in that. They have some weak AMD CPU normally found in a laptop and because they make rubbish PCs they go cheap. I watched a server build in one recently. Not 10 watts but more like 60 watts at full speed but a lot better than 300 watts a server would use.

My (plex) server, which is on its third iteration, has been literally screwed to the wall at work. Motherboard,CPU,RAM anyway, It started off as a lowly Dual Core Pentium with 4x2TB WD Green HD's back in 2011 and a crappy RocketRaid controller. 2nd iteration was a 2nd gen i7, and 4x8TB Seagate's... Running Windows this whole time. Storage Spaces has worked well. Learned a lesson upgrading to 4x14TB HD;s and Cluster Size and why it matters. Its now a 8th Gen i5. Let me know if you's like Pics. Its been a great server.

I've built my first PFSense router using a Rosewill 2U Chassis, Xeon 10 Core processor, 16Gb of DDR4 memory and all is running great. Temps are stable at 43*C. It runs 24/7 as a router should. Now my next project coming up is building a "Modular" 44U Server Rack. Simply put ... A Server Rack that can be split into two 22U parts then add a table top and now you have a work bench with the ability to hold server chassis or add drawers for storage ... I will be building two server racks. One for me and one I will give to a YT Techie who can review and give me feedback on the design. (wink wink Jeff, Kyle, Jason or others).

I’ve been dabbling in using older hardware for a server for a bit now, mostly just for Plex. I’ve always just used off the shelf consumer parts, I’ve never had actual “server” hardware. I literally just finished upgrading my server with “new” old hardware. My upgrade was, I went from an i7 4790 with a Jgingyue h97 board with 32gb of team ddr3, to a ryzen 7 2700x with a gigabyte b450m ds3h with 64gb of leven sinba ddr4. I reused the same gpu, Quadro M2000. I’d like to upgrade that to an Rtx 4000 but with prices what they are that’s not gonna happen anytime soon.

I'm commenting before I watch the video, but I saw the title and laughed a little. I'm using my old 1700X with 48 GB of cheap G Skill ram I found on amazon to host all my stuff in proxmox. It's a really nice machine, and the AMD CPU means I can use my 1070 for Jellyfin transcoding via IOMMU (plus the patch driver to unlock the NVENC streams :)). I also run TrueNAS inside a VM which is definitely not optimal, but hey, it works. Lol

@@DarkSwordsman yeah, I had stability issues with my 1700x because I THOUGHT I was buying Samsung B-die RAM, but my Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro sticks were 1 revision off, and I got Hynix CJR, which does NOT play well with first gen Ryzen. Upgrading to the 3700x solved every stability issue I had, and doubled the performance. Dont feel too bad though, my 1700x was an upgrade from my Phenom II 1090T BE

Thats how we all started is it not? My first Server... An Olivetti 8086 (yes it is not missing a 2,3 or 4 or 5 for that matter. NOT 286, NOT386...but 086!) with 640kb ram. 1x720kb 3½ floppy and a 20 meg HDD. It had an issue serving though... It had no network card and I never obtained one, as they did not exist within the budget of a 10 year old. So my first server was a total flop!

I know the old adage is "raid is not a backup" but by can't it be? Raid 1 is copy of the drive but it's inaccessible without the other drive why couldn't we have a subset of raid 1 that leaves the drive readable independently?

Delete one file. Now recover it from the other drive. You don't have a backup, you have redundancy. RAID is for uptime assurance, not disaster recovery. But RAID can be a tool used both on primary AND backup data stores.

I've actually already made a Proxmox server out of some of my old gaming PC hardware myself with a nice beefy 3900x at it's core. I'm thinking I might just switch to a Windows based host and using Hyper-V instead of Proxmox. It just seems that much easier.

UnRaid might be a simpler solution that doesn't require much Linux expertise.

I got into it by buying older stuff on eBay for cheap. And mixing and matching from my collection of RAM and CPUs.

What program or something would you use if you wanted to make something that your kids could back up their homework from at school or college? Or dump it at home and get what they need when home? I'm lost with this one.

Maybe Nextcloud if you want your own remotely accessible cloud storage and syncing. You could also use regular file shares over VPN but that's more involved.

Personally I bought a similar iStarUSA case but the back pci slots where oriented for the low profile cards.... :/ Trying to talk to the seller to get the ones for the full sized cards. What Riser are you using?

i use my old editing rigs as servers , my cold storage server is core2duo quad , the other use a i5 on a 1150 run plex and tornido for cloud both are running windows server 2012r2 and live in old vertical server case and am using windows storage space for my raid , raid2 for the cold storage , and raid 10 with 6 driver for the other , and i have one other old am1 as my pfsence

Ever since I discovered your channel last year I've wanted to build my own server, but can't justify the expense. Recently I realized I could repurpose my old Sandybridge i3 machine that was originally built to be a MythTV box in the living room. It served its purpose well, but I was never able to get it to talk to my cable box when I switched services back in 2013, so it has gone mostly unused for a while. I'm just waiting for the RAM upgrade (4 GB isn't going to cut it) to arrive, and I've already installed Proxmox and done a little bit of playing around (I've used Linux as my primary OS since 1998, so not a huge learning curve here...). Is it a killer server? Nah, but it should give me some experience and let me see whether I will actually make use of a server. And if so, then I can look at upgrading the CPU to an Ivy Bridge i7 (which the motherboard claims to support), and/or look at building a new, more powerful server. It should be fun, at least. Now if only the shipment will ship faster......
