I like the spline jig using the miter slots as opposed to the fence style I’ve seen. Thanks Jon!

I am 7 years late to the party! Love the way you utilize tape and keep it simple. Glue and brads is all that is needed for a jig. Putting the jig within a cross cut sled was genius.

Jon, I make a TON of picture frames for my wife, who is also an artist, and make a lot for gifts as well. I have been wanting to try to spline the miters for awhile and this jig looks perfect for what I want to do. I really like the versatility of the jig and how you can use different width frames on it and the blade passes through only one spot rather than other jigs aren't "adjustable" if you will, and you have numerous blade paths through the jig. Awesome job! Can't wait to make this! Thanks!!!

Jon I made one of these tonight because I saw this video today. Wasn’t exactly to your dimensions but close. I used some scrap plywood I had laying around. Thank you for the inspiration.

I think I am going to make this, but make it as an insert that can pin into my cross cut sled, maybe dowels to pin it in place and keep things square. Nice video, keeps me motivated to get out and do something!

Great video as always. Your skill set is amazing, I wish I could measure with my fingers and run a line down a board like you do always fun for me to watch. BUT the BEST part of this video was when you talked about your son. Very nice to see and hear a proud Dad talking about his children 👍for that alone.😀

Jon great video, I made a temporary jig awhile ago and although I don't really make frames I do make small boxes, I have a 2mm blade on my saw and at my local hardware chain they throw away the packing strips between the timber lucky me Merbau, Spotted Gum, Jarrah all hard woods of different shades, there all pretty close to 2mm sometimes a little sanding is needed to get that snug fit...... I'am impressed with your using the off cut as your work piece will definitely try that next time and will use a couple of your ideas and make a not so temporary spline jig, Tim.
@AprilWilkerson9 жыл бұрын
Great video Jon, I learned a few different things in this one. I like your finger as a marking tool method. ; ) I also love the trick of using the cutoff as your useable piece; that's smart and I'll use it. I was in a situation the other day where I was trying to cut 1/8" strips and it was making me uneasy.

Spline are one of the best ways to strengthen frames, and even if I don't use one decoratively, I often make a spline on the bottom of the canvas frame for strength open on open side. I have a dado set just for this purpose. Its so much easier to keep equal width cuts so that my splines will all fit perfectly.
@QuarterinchoffDIY9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for posting this. I've struggled with splines for boxes and the areas I've struggled in you have provided me with some thoughts on how to resolve my issues.

Excellent video, you really pack in the info! For me the best tip was glueing the jig runners in place on the table saw, simple but genius! I see other KZbin vids where they measure the parallels then glue and you just know they can't be as accurate as they would be like this.

Nice, Jon. In addition to my woodworking hobby, I'm also an accomplished landscape photographer and make my own prints. Due to the cost of custom framing, I've been making my own for several years but never gave the use of splines any thought as far as my frames went...this jig will certainly be another tool in the arsenal. Thanks.

Considering that the two sides of the jig are never going to be used (to be read, occupied with material) you could add two screws on either side that would act as end stops for the frame. One on each side for the two cuts. Awesome jig!

I use to make a lot of frames back in the 80's when my photography grew. I liked corner splines like you're doing but I did a lot of face splines and I'm not seeing those around? Corner splines are nice on wider boxes/frames but get lost on thinner frames. That's when the face splines work nicely as a visual accent.
