Build A Skate Pool Inspired Back Yard Mini Ramp for Skateboarding

In this video I try my hand at making a back yard mini ramp. I use my love of pool skating to inspire a few design elements that you don't see everyday on a mini ramp. With minimal skills and fairly rubbish tools I make plenty of mistakes along the way.

You know you've got skate style when you're mini ramp has style. I'd never think to "theme" a miniramp, but if I did, this would be a great one! Very creative. I love it. Built a mini ramp when I was in college in two days with my buddy. I really REALLY want one now, especially since I'm older and need exercise. I'd shape right up with one of those. It's not the right time though, so I'll have to settle with being super jealous of people like you that have one!

Hey Dude Many thanks for tuning in. I got the main batch of wood and ply from a local merchants as a lot and spent around £480 ? I used old paint and other bits of wood I already had so it’s fair to assume it would be a bit more all in. Unfortunately wood prices in the uk have gone crazy since I built this (almost double?) so it’s not really possible to give you an accurate idea if building one now, but it would be a fair bit more?!

@@JonBishopSkate yeah. My mate had a ramp in his back garden growing up but we’d only be able to skate it for an hour a day due to neighbours complaining. Ended up replacing the coping with plastic pipe and fitting vinyl coated boards over the surface. That’s awesome though. Would love to have a ramp like that in our garden. I’m teaching my kids and local skateparks are always so busy. I suppose that concrete coping is a little quieter than steel.

Beautiful miniramp Jon. Great work (and great working assistants!). The radius looks smooth and perfect. I built a similar one 4 years ago but made a lot of mistakes, starting by a shorter flat part, which maked it pretty tricky to skate. I downgraded it last year to a micro 1,5 ft high and now it's much more fun. I am skating it everyday during quarentine btw. So congratulations and looking forward to your new vids tutorials on it!

I found a transition I liked in a skatepark and copied it, the flat bottom was luck as it’s just as long as I have space for! I wouldn’t want it any shorter for the speed of the transitions !!

Hey dude, Many thanks for the comment! This was a while back, I just set it by eye, modelled off photos I took of the local ramp where I liked the coping. I like a fair bit of relief, but I made it so it could be adjusted if it was unrideable. I must stress this was only a makeshift solution as there was no way to get steel coping due to the lockdown. This concrete coping solution kept the noise down, but as it’s path edging the concrete is not designed to withstand the trucks. So it required a lot of maintenance and would chip easily. I’d recommend getting real pool coping, or to make your own with super tough concrete. There are plenty of tutorials on how to make super tough concrete coping on KZbin. Again I couldn’t even buy concrete at the time of building? I think ultimately the path edging was a failed experiment, but it got the ramp up and running at a very unusual time ?!! Sorry I can’t be more help !

sheffieldgeek many thanks for tuning in. Yeah you could do, but I guess that is more for ledges and curbs? All the pool coping I’ve ridden has been lacquered and the spray lacquer is the stuff that the hardcore pool guys like Steve Alba use Aka Salba sauce. It works a treat and sinks in to bind the concrete and protect it. I’ve given it 7 coats now and will sand and refresh as we go !

John Skye hi John, many thanks for tuning in. Yes it’s just cheap, grey masonry paint. On the tin it says Granocryl by Leyland, tough and protective, 10 year life, smooth masonry paint. Grey skies is the colour. I did a couple of watered down coats and a main coat. I wanted that concrete feel so I figured masonry paint might help. It’s breathable too. I’ve got enough in a 5 litre can to do another few full coats so I’ll see how it wears and refresh from there ! I lightly sanded between coats to knock the texture from the roller off. It’s very smooth! I hope that helps.

And a final question.. Did you put some kind of sealant between the ply layers? I read somewhere you should leave a bit of space to allow the wood to move a bit, but just seems that the water goes through the gabs and soaks the lower layers.

John Skye just Cuprinol shed stuff for the lower layers, it’s called ducks back, and the water just beads off it, but it still breaths. I used heavy duty wood filler for gaps and imperfections and that seals it up, tarp over the top, i know it will delaminate and rott no mater what, but every little helps stem the tide. I got good ply with outdoor glue and everything is painted. The pressure treated timber is good for years so if I have to re-skin it in a few years time it’s not the end of the world ?!

@@JonBishopSkate Thanks for all that. I live in Spain, so a bit harder for me to search out products and then find them. I am sure they all exist here, but with different brand names. I have too ramps now.. one is a decent 3.5ft one and the other I call a micro ramp, at around 2ft. The 3ft is in humid environment and has gone a bit soft in the flat after 18m, whilst the micro ramp is really dry but with lots of sun.. and that has started to crack up a bit now after almost a year, but to be honest I didn't even paint that one. Both had their top layers in marine ply, but honestly not sure how much difference it makes. My basic plan was to replace the top layer every year anyway! Well thanks for the advice and great series you put together!!! Must take up a lot of time, but really like how you are doing everything!

Hey dude. Yeah I went for BB grade ply and painted it. If you go for cheap ply it will delimitate even when painted. Proper shed style paint for all the non skated surfaces. Masonry paint for the riding surfaces. Combined with a cover it's lasted over a year with no issues? Marine ply is expensive, but will still delaminate if not treated. The key area to seal up is the edges of the ply to about two inches in all round. I did like 5 coats of the shed stuff on the edges to be sure. The shed stuff skates terrible as it's oil based so I found water based smooth masonry paint to work well. You may find my 1 year ramp review video of interest? Adam Hill yeah, the masonry paint rides great, lots of grip. Any matt water based exterior paint would do I’d imagine. My friend used Matt garage floor paint and loves it. I steered clear of anything oily or waterproof. My mate used shed stain and it was slippy. He went over it with the masonry paint and that rescued it?

I had lots of other bits of wood and screws and most of the paint left over from other projects in the shed. Coping was £30 for 6 blocks. I needed a few extra 2x4 and some screws, plus 5 bags of post Crete so all up I recon around £500. But it would be lots more if you went to a diy place and had to buy everything so I wouldn’t want my ballpark figure to mislead as I was proper scrimping it !!

Hi Jon, sweet job! Can you tell us the size of the ramp with height and length as well as how the parts quarter, bottom and table fit together in terms of size. I did build two quarter pipes to be prepared for lockdown, but they probably gonna need some tweaks as I am losing some speed. Mainly because its not one piece and I just got stone terrace bottom in between, but maybe the dimensions of those quarters could be improved as well. I am planning on moving it to a leveled clean wooden ground as well... Your first test ride looked just about a perfect sized mini:)

Yes, it’s plenty fast enough with plenty of zip, it’s quite tight, but works really well and is challenging enough to skate because of the tightness of size. Here’s the measurements- Tranny radius 6’6” Coping to coping 18ft Platforms 2ft (just added a 1ft extension so now a 3 ft platform at one end so now I can roll out and in, we’ll worth it the 3 ft platform!) Length was just over 22’ but now just over 23’ with the platform adjustments. Height from flat bottom to coping 2’6” The flat bottom section is 8ft, the quarters also have a little bit of flat on to insure the curve is perfect so all up there is around 9ft of flat bottom? It’s 8ft wide, 10ft would be amazing as slashes need to be tight so you don’t fly off the sides, but the challenge is fun and good practice as it’ll tighten all my turns up?? Yeah thats right!Fantastic build sure you will have many great sessions and good for learning tricks then expanding on them at the local park.I built a concrete one at mine a couple of years ago one of best home improvements have ever done don't think missis agrees but hey keeps me out of trouble.. Hey dude!! Many thanks for tuning in! Yeah love the surf skate, I have a Carver Triton. The wood was £460 then I got extra screws and bits for the safety rails etc I already had paint, done screws and breeze blocks, I recon £600 ish if you had to buy everything??

Getting back into skating after a break of 20+ years, inspired by my kids getting into it., looks like a mellow but fun ramp.... a few Qs Did you use treated wood or normal wood ? looked like a mix from what I could see How has the ramp stood up to the weather? Hey dude Yeah pressure treated for the frame. All other ply wood has to be sealed and painted. I did quite a few follow up videos, they should hopefully answer the rest of your questions. The cost to build a ramp out of wood has probably doubled since I built this due to COVID/brexit so I wouldn’t be able to give you an accurate cost? It was a joy to skate, but needed a lot of maintenance. I was going through lacquer at a rate. I managed to find some steel so changed it out after 6 weeks. It was an interesting experiment and it got me through lock down when getting hold of the steel was tricky !!

kevin bunton hey dude, it’s 18ft coping to coping, 22ft long, that gives you just over 8ft of flat bottom, 2 ft platforms, it’s really fun, I worried myself senseless about the design, but I recon you’ll just get used to anything and anything is skate able ??!! Obviously I’d like bigger platforms, but the coping to coping distance on this ramp definitely works, I’m certainly not thinking if only I made it longer?!!

kevin bunton when everything starts up again I’m gonna build some safety rail backstops and incorporate an extra foot of platform I recon, it’s quite disconcerting at the moment if you over shoot an axle stall or pivot lol

Jon Bishop we’re avidly watching all your videos. They’re great!... as for an update on our ramp.... we got to the stage of the riding surface on the flat and just the transition riding surface to go. It looked absolutely awesome. However, due to some ‘local politics’ we had a rethink... out came the circular saw again and we converted it to a 2ft x 8ft x 19ft and put it in the garage. It was very ‘emotional’ to downsize the ramp, but it does make it easier to learn the new tricks from you ‘our guru’.

Yeah, holding up pretty good, that said I keep it under a tarp and we’ve only had a handful of wet days. The paint really helps I think, a bit of frost and some solid British weather this winter will be the test !!

Yeah the tarp is key alright. No water lying on it. Your neighbours must be pretty cool too. Buddy of mine had similar setup and got a fair complaints in the beginning. He stuffed it with bags of old insulation which dampened the noise a lot.

I've just pulled down my old above ground pool so I can build my 1st mini ramp, do you think 6 foot transition would be to sharp for a 3 foot high ramp?

Great stuff! Sounds exciting. I guess radius is personal preference and down to what you want to get out of the ramp (easy progression vs challenge and adrenaline?) I’ve got 6,6 on just under 3 ft and it’s pretty zippy, but still easy to learn on. I recon it depends most on the flat bottom length. I probably wouldn’t go steeper on mine just cause it’d be too fast for me to react to the other end coming at me as I could only fit a small flat bottom? I was worried about getting it wrong so found a transition I liked skating at my local park and then measured that to be safe?! Good luck, I’d love to see some pics when it’s done!!

Hey dude, Yeah, masonry paint is the one. Water based masonry paint, drys Matt and nice and grippy and stops the wet, but let’s the wood breath. There is a can shot in the vid so you can pause it perhaps ? I’ve heard bad things about using oil based wood preserver due to the grip issues ?!

Hey Jon, great ramp! We're ready to build our own. Just one thing, we're concerned that we might need planning permission as the ramp has platforms either end and it's 3ft high. Did you have to get planning? If so, any tips on how to get it through planning?

Yeah, It’s a bit of a grey area, but it kind of fits under a temporary / moveable structure under 2.4m. Just like decking or a shed, But it’s worth checking with your local authority for sure. If you have neighbours it’s worth communicating with them and saying what you are planning to do.

Further to this it looks as though Cheltenham Borough Council do require planning permission. I've had the following response from them: "I have had confirmation from our duty planning officer that unless the skateboard ramp is on wheels and/or stored away each night then planning permission would be required."
