Even without any narration, it was such an informative video. Definitely helpful, thanks.

Hey Chris, seriously considering a build just like this. Need a small BBQ cover and don't want post on the new Trex deck. Wondering what the distance is between your posts. I would want to cover about 10 feet (roof), but thinking I can get there with a posts 7 feet apart with 1.5 ft overhang on each side or so. I only need to cover 4-5 feet of roof space. That would be the 2.5 for the kitchen and a couple feet for me to stand. Do you think I can get away with digging less than 5ft on this setup? Or is there some kind of depth calculator you could recommend

David, thanks for watching! I’m not sure if you watched the other video of this build where I explain a lot more and have answered a lot of questions from other folks. It may be worth a look. To answer your questions. My posts are 11.5 feet apart and I spanned them with 16’ 2x6s. It is plenty sturdy with the plywood on there. The ply wood really stabilizes the whole structure. Now let’s talk about the post holes. I personally would not take any risk here. The strength of a cantilevered structure comes from the friction on the columns in the ground. I would stick to a 1/3 2/3 rule. 1/3 of your Column in the ground and 2/3 above grade to the top of your beam. So the taller the top of the beam that support the joists, the deeper you will need to go. If you are placing the posts next to a deck you may be able to lag bolt the columns into the beam of the deck to gain a little more lateral support. I designed roof depth to be 8’ edge to edge and 16’ wide because it takes 4 sheets of OSB and the 8’ long metal roof panels without a lot of cutting. Recommend doing some demonsion for yours that decides easily by 4 and is 8’ tall edge to short edge. If you do shingles you don’t need to work about it. Let me know if I can answer any more questions and best of luck with your build. Be sure to let me know how it goes and take a few minutes to post your build on KZbin!

@@chriswinnek7200 Thanks for that detailed reply Chris. Yes, I did watch your other video several times and also Craig and Sue’s blog. It didn’t look they even used cement, just the lag bolts you spoke of. We just put in a new TREX deck so perhaps the bolts would work for us. I’ll keep you posted. I wouldn’t be the guy to do the job, but wanted to learn more about it to speak with a handy man we know in the neighborhood. Thanks again
