Have to admit, this is the build that I have the most interest in. It's much more intensive as you have to paint, decal, glue and light the model from scratch. It's looking really great! Look forward to the next session on this!

10:43 not sure if you know it or not, but the reason for the different intervals is pretty easy. All the footage in WoK of the Enterprise leaving spacedock was recycled from TMP. So they obviously changed it for all other shots in WoK. Funny how easily they could get away with reusing footage back in the day between movies.

I remember the original Klingon D-7 came with a light set. Little bulbs and a couple of AA batteries. You would lift the shuttle bay on top of the aft section off to change them. I want to say it was an AMT kit but its been close to 50 years ago and i don't remember all the details. Maybe something a bit less complicated to get back into it for me.

You have an amazing about of patience and a very steady hand to paint that bridge. It looks wonderful. Out of curiosity, are you tracking your time on the build? How long did it take to prep, paint, and build the bridge interior? That would be very interesting to see your time investment in the actual build also.

Nice observation about the interval with the bridge strobe: I had always assumed it was the fast interval. Must have been that way for Motion Picture, and changed in WoK (since Enterprise leaving space dock was recycled TMP film). There might be people out there who have made up context of a real starship having discrepancies in that (like they do the color of the deflector dish in different modes or violet vs blue warp grills). I'm currently building the Klingon BoP to display next to the Refit (and Tomy TOS die cast when it comes). Nice to see vids of folks and their builds of Enterprise: am gathering parts and will start assembling after BoP (though figuring out lighting the spacedock base). Will track your progress!
@lestatdelc
@lestatdelc Жыл бұрын
You are correct. All the Enterprise in drydock, and leaving drydock shots (such as the close-up of rat impulse engines) in TWOK are re-used footage from TMP. ILM who did the FX for TWOK not only made modifications to the lighting, some blink in TWOK that didn't in TMP, but also ruined the original pearlescent paint job the flaming miniature had in TMP. This is because ILM could not pull good bluescreen travelling mattes film plates off it with the pearlescent paint the way Trumbull at EEG did in TMP (he used a unique white backlight technique to get the travelling mattes instead.
@dsr0116
@dsr0116 Жыл бұрын
@@lestatdelc I've heard from ILM team that when they received the model, the paint job had already been ruined in some spots (and would happen again when it was received by VFX studios for other movies as well: it would always go through a paint restoration each movie). The reflections from pearlescent paint was also an issue with TMP optical compositing. Closely look at scenes in dry dock: you'll see at times there are edges that don't have a clear border, or faces that aren't masked and get a star-field/ image of Earth on them. One thing I have noticed with the new 4K Directors Cut is that when they were digitally enhancing/restoring, they fixed those original compositing issues as well. In interviews, Trumbull indicated he'd sometimes use white background compositing: the technique is to first make the model a black object and the background white. Camera operators for VFX always had talcum powder on hand to cut down reflections if they were too shiny. As someone who has been involved with 3D animation, I thought techniques ILM started using in TWOK era were pretty ground breaking. Blue screen had been used to separate a background that the film negative wouldn't pick up from the model. But they also had a computerized camera that would film the model in different passes. Like passes that are done with 3D VFX, they would have a "beauty pass", interior lights, exterior lights, etc (so that there could be adjustments in editing). When ILM received the Enterprise model for ST6, it had a whole side of it spray painted. They were going to have to repaint the whole model anyway. It was then that they also decided to make it totally matte finish (they said it was also to make filming easier to not have as many passes).
@lestatdelc
@lestatdelc Жыл бұрын
@@dsr0116 - Motion control passes had been in use prior to TWOK, going back to the Dykstraflex system that was developed for the original Star Wars. Trumbull was not a fan of so-called bluescreen, because of the degredation to the image caused by processing all the elements that need to be optically composited afterward, such as grain and hard edges. EEG had a motion control rig they had custom built for Close Encounters, Apogee, who was also doing FX work on TMP had their next generation version of the Dykstraflex for shooting the Klingon cruisers, V'ger the Epsilon 9 elements) which they used to shoot the Enterprise miniature against a screen covered in a new highly reflective material called Scotchlite, developed by 3M. A white light was directed at it which would put the model in silouhette. A matte pass was shot, so that it could be used to leave a clear space on unexposed film, inwhich the Enterprise would fit when they wound it back in the camera in order to film another pass. Then a "beauty" pass of the ship well lit, and a "lights only" pass etc, would be shot on the same film. While it was not perfect, as you noted regarding a couple of points where there were matte "holes" it did eliminate the blue light spill that would have occurred had they used actual blue screen to produce the traveling mattes. That said, I don't buy ILM's claim the paint was damaged when they got the model for filming TWOK. I am almost certain they simply wanted to use their bluescreen process as opposed to the hi-con approach the Trumbulll used on TMP (and would use again for Blade Runner) and so repainted portions of the model to knock back the pearlescent paint job Paul Oslen had laid down for TMP.
@dsr0116
@dsr0116 Жыл бұрын
@@lestatdelc I said motion control cameras were in use by TWOK era (ILM was created by Lucas during Star Wars, and by the 80s was a large VFX studio for may other movies). No matter if you use a blue-screen that the camera film doesn't record or you have black and white traveling mattes, they still require forms of optical compositing: and film degradation. Trumbull's main criticism of the blue-screen process was that he didn't see why some companies were using so many passes (where he'd often try to get miniatures in the same shot). Trumbull's productions often mitigated degradation by filming VFX on 70mm. ILM would film on VistaVision: a large 35mm format. Trumbull noted there was some learning curve with him and Dykstra (since Dykstra's systems had been VistaVision). I take ILM for their word: if you hear about any production or remastering of Star Trek material, you always hear about how the models/props/film stock wasn't taken care of well (and apart from TWOK to Search for Spock, the Enterprise model changing do to issues in storage or traveling exhibits). I thought I also read that during TMP, they had asked to tone down the reflectiveness of the model as it got closer to filming (as it would also have problems for matte lines with hi-con). Certainly Paul Olsen's work was best seen in person, and our current digital productions could help do it justice.
@dsr0116
@dsr0116 Жыл бұрын
@@samwalker8893 Yeah, I remember ILM also said they had to rewire the Enterprise for TWOK because the whole armature was broken and had shorts when they received it. With ST6 they had to paint the whole model because it had been at a Planet Hollywood, and one whole side was spray painted a solid color😬 It would be neat if the Smithsonian were to acquire the model, and since it's no longer filming, have an original pearlescent paint scheme. Though maybe there are fans who prefer the blue A backs😀

Hi Wayne.. I think they messed up the scale of the figures by at least 50% too small. 2mm at 1:350 is 700mm (70cm) or 27.56 inches tall... TINY. I'm a short**** at 4'8 and even I am twice that height at 142cm (4' 8"). 6' should be 5.2mm at 1@350 scale. Either the scale is wrong and it's 1:700 or the figures are wrong.
