damn shame there wasn't a season 5 to see this ship in action

I rewatched enterprise the other day for the first time since its original air date and your right such a shame. There could have been some fantastic story lines such as foucssing on the romulan war as I've always wanted to see that in a trek series. Loved to have seen why and how they used nuclear weapons or seen the enterprised beefed up to take on the threat. Oh well at least we have Discovery...oh wait.

There’s a reboot series of books that involve it! (roughly 10 I think) I highly recommend reading em if you wanna see more adventures of the Enterprise crew. They start with “last full measure.”

I think of there had been a 5th season , writers could have corrected the issue of nuke weapons during the Romulan war( the nx-01 had received phase cannons and photonic torpedos which were far more powerful than plasma cannons and spatial torpedoes which were a magnitude more potent than low yield nuke missiles) Maybe warp2- 3 ships were used in the Romulan war? The Earth contingent may not have had time to refit all ships to the NX-01 to 05 standards and would have to “ fight with what they had”

Their are people who really want a season 5 Enterprise. Most like they would take off the last episode in season 4 and then move into season 5 with this retrofit.

I think the NX refit really reflects the journey the original ship had taken, almost as if someone read the mission reports and said "How to we prevent some of those avoidable gotchas that the crew endured." closing up the nacelles for example because they realized firstly, it's dangerous out there, this isn't just peaceful exploration and someone is going to try to take a pot shot at the nacelles because some _DID_ take potshots at the nacelles and disable the ship's warp drive. Also it might reflect a more confidence in the technology. That perhaps the open nacelles was to allow some rapid tossing of plasma in the event of some accident they felt was going to happen more than it should. After flying around for almost 5 years with a good operation record, perhaps they felt, ok the risk of some plasma issue isn't as bad as we thought, so we can close up these nacelles. Remember Archer and Jeffries went back and forth on the design of the ship as it was being built, Archer saying he didn't want to command a warship, and perhaps there were elements of his father's design he didn't want to give up. What alot of people forget is Archer unlike other captains of Enterprise had a direct involvement in the design of the ship, Archer didn't just command enterprise, he helped design her. And after what he experienced with the Xindi, Archer might have come to accept Jeffries' suggestions and perhaps even encouraged them, resulting in a more robust, durable vessel, that's slightly more intimidating. Archer will always be an explorer at heart, but had the series gone on, he would have likely been more vigilant when it came to his interactions with other people, Not saying he wanted to suddenly have a warship, but just that he's not as overly sensitive about things as before and would rather have an extra torpedo launcher or thicker armor plating regardless of what other people might think.

My theory on adding a secondary hull: In NX-01, the path of the power was horizontal out the saucer, then a 90 degree turn aft to go down the pontoons, then another 90 to go up the pylons. They theorized that power was being lost taking those 90 degree turns, so to get a straight shot from the engine itself thru the pylons and into the nacelles, the pylons were extended down to where they meet.. hence the need for the secondary hull. That opened space in the saucer section, where engineering once was. It also explains differences in the look of the pontoons, because they no longer had the power lines running through them. The reason the secondary hull was so small, was space in the pontoons was now available, the profile of the mission probably wasn't changed all that much. In reality, the only thing the secondary hull had to do, was to provide space for engineering. One think you didn't mention.. the shuttle bay. What happened to it? If memory serves, it was located precisely where the neck in the refit connects. I didn't see shuttle bay anywhere. Another point.. the NX-01 was an experimental ship. Pressed into long-term service. The secondary hull, and new engine/pylon/nacelle geometry could have been a "test", so some of the old technology on NX-01 (original) didn't need to be updated to the very latest and greatest technology everywhere.
@Nitram4392
@Nitram4392 2 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is years old, but I can answer some of the questions, if you're watching this video in the present. The secondary hull was added to contain the new Warp 7 Warp core. (side note: the secondary hull can be seperated by explosive bolts, if the experimental core becomes critical) The open space in the saucer section doesn't exist, because the Warp 5 core is still installed. It is used to run the new deflector shields provided by the Andorians in combat, while the new core runs weapons and engines. The shuttle bay(s) are now in the back of the saucer section and are more similar to the later "flight deck" design. But there is still a drop down hangar for 2 hull inspection pods. They're just farther back. If you want you can check out the internal changes on this (www.waxingmoondesign.com/MainPage.html) page yourself.

Perfect timing as my Eaglemoss refit model just arrived this morning! I suspect the NX refit is more squat than the Constitution because deflector technology was less advanced / efficient. The Constitution could afford to be bigger as it could project a wider deflection field.

I absolutely love the NX-01 Refit. It really sucks Enterprise got canned since we learned we were going to see the refit in Season 5. When I built the Round 2 1/1000th version of the NX-01 I made it as the refit. Edit: Doug has gone on record saying that the refit parts were meant to be a plug n play style. Basically if needed they can be removed from the ship then added again for specific missions or whatever.

Fortunately, the secondary hull is not what the producers wanted. As a first ship, they should be smaller and less complex than what we see 70 years down the road. Had there been a secondary hull from the get go, it would showcase that technology had not really advanced over that time. It would also show that the Constitution Class is not that much of an advancement, as with the secondary hull the ships are near identical in size. The secondary hull i could see coming along 35-40 years later as the NX classes are refitted. If we were to get an extra season of Enterprise it would have been nice to see the next 3 ships be launced. Never seeing the secondary hull on a ship but perhaps just on a display as an "idea" someone is messing around with. Looking at these ships it would be interesting to see each class of ship get designed to the styling of another time period. What would a NX class look like if done in the refit/miranda way, or Ent B, C, D, E. What would the Ent B look like in the styling of the NX or the Ent D. As you guys have said there are only so many ways to do a saucer and hull, would be interesting to take the various shapes and move them into different eras.

I always viewed the NX as a test bed for the warp 5 engine core and that using it as an exploratory vessel was a great experiment. When they made another vessel of the same model (Columbia) then it clearly ceased to be "eXperimental" and thus became a ship of the line and should have been changed to "NCC-01". As for "refitting" it, then it definitely should have been redesignated because the role of the vessel had clearly changed from that of essentially a scout to a light cruiser. There are historical examples of this, such as when the old US Navy collier (a freighter designed to haul coal) USS Jupiter (AC-3) was modified 7 years after its initial commissioning in 1913 by adding a flight deck to become the first aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1) in 1920.

The Columbia deflector was a concept that was thought to perform better than the Enterprise's, but in practice they found it didn't work as well and they never used it again. Simple explanation. :)

9:52 Oh THATS what happened? I figured there was some kind of production curfuffle. I mean, realistically, a long range sensor apparatus is NOT the same thing as a wide angle FTL particle and debris deflector... Though it DOES make sense to place both devices in the same location, facing forward. At FTL warp speeds, you will want to maybe see whete youre going? And at the same time, be able to see AND move debris and particulate matter out of the way of your ship or itll punch holes in your hull.... This may have been a retcon. But, if anything, it was a good one. To my own head canon bc of all this: yes Cptn they put the LR sensor array there first. And than only later upgraded ships with the deflector parts. And this was at NXs time, that does make the most sense. So than, why did happen on the Connie? Simple. the design for the main deflector of the Constitution class when it came about and was launched was so advanced at the time they launched it at first only with just the long range sensors. (Though, what early Constitutions were using as a deflector than comes into question, and why none of them randomly disappeared from traveling at warp and hitting a stray particle at just the wrong angle only to explode... Theories???)

Although I love the designs for the NX and its refit I think the Pioneer Class from Star Trek Online makes a little more sense as a first evolutionary step towards what would eventually become the star drive section. It's very much like a slightly pre TOS style NX but there's just that small added pod attached to the bottom of the saucer for the dish and I can more easily see that being expanded upon in subsequent designs until becoming the full secondary hull seen by the time of the Constitution Class.

It goes from a flar space-raft to a ship with a keel and a real space-craft that can stay in deep space for extended periods. I wish there was a season 5 the crew was just hitting its stride. The engineering hull does look tacked on, but it looks like it was a well engineered addin, like the angle deck on the Coral Sea aircraft carrier had an angle deck added, it was still an Essex class, with modifications to handle jet aircraft. The engineering hull was added for more endurance and perhaps to carry photon torpedoes, and reactor fuel for the Romulan War
@Tyranidus7
@Tyranidus7 Жыл бұрын
As my answer to the question, “Why would you add secondary hull like this instead of just combining everything at the end?” I think a big factor would be putting this ship into the Earth-Romulan War where time and resources were probably very limited so if new advances came or needed to be made to keep up with Romulan ships then they wouldn’t necessarily build completely new ships but they would possibly add as little as possible to current ships to meet demand. It can be explained as a delicate balance of added hardware vs resources available. Also the Series finale stated the enterprise was cruising at warp 7 so the secondary hull could be explained as necessary to house a much larger warp reactor. Perhaps even new shielding to help withstand the speed. Or even better explain that the ships shape actually is more stable for warp speeds and why starfleet eventually went all in basically on that design. The refit is great and much like the show itself its a shame it was canceled before its time.

Color changes of windows is an easy explanation: window tint. When he NX-01 launched, energy shielding was minimal and barely effective. As such, radiation shielding was accomplished by actual plating on the hull and leaded glass/reflective tinting for windows....especially into the orange/red shades to block infrared radiations (since looking out a non-shielded window into an unfiltered infrared source would result in severe retinal damage in very short order.) By the time of the refit, navigational deflectors (among other technological advancements) would allow for removal of the tinting, allowing for natural lighting colors to shine out from inside the ship without being filtered by the tinting.

As an old soldier here's what I can tell you about the difference in colors, potentially. And Mike 10 years serving in the military I saw bass commanders decided they wanted to change the shade of brown or blue or whatever used throughout the entire base because they liked another shade slightly better. Sometimes it could be as juvenile and Patty as that. Somebody just happen to like a different color and since they were in charge they have the ability to have all the general facilities and vehicles painted a slightly different shade of all of drab, strata blue or Doodoo brown.

NX-01 refit is merely a way to try out some new things before implementing them on actual new ships, a test bed of sorts to check the relevance of a concept instead of making a new but impractical ship. US and other navies have done it in the past, trying out catapults on old cruisers to test if they could send and recover an aircraft on a warship before building an aircraft carrier and the first carriers were old cargo ships transformed into aircraft carriers before the navies could build real and practical carriers. So that wouldn't surprise me if Starfleet tried the secondary hull concept on the old and glorious NX-01 before building new ships with secondary hulls.
@Karagianis
@Karagianis 2 жыл бұрын
I like the idea that the new larger warp core that the endineering hull addition allowed was maybe a little more dangerous, that the secondary hull design was maybe added to keep it away from the bulk of the crew. The extra plating on the top of the secondary hull fits with that too, some form of radiation shielding. I could see the engine room crew wearing protective clothing down there and being rotated so as to not spend too long in there.

FOR ME: 1) a) they should attach this thing, if ever, then somewhere in the beggining of the series when enterprise was first recall to earth . they did an overhaul or something back then , so it would be logical to refit enterprise in its development stage as a test study.And never refit any other nx ship but rather go straight into constitution design. b) never refit nx-01 and leave it as a sort of sience experiment, to study long time exposure of nx design to space . then conclude that all the other nx class ships need a refit to minimise some issues with oryginal design and continue this into new clases. 2) i would like to mention, that every early earth nx ship was an experimental ship by itself and columbia and enterprise could test different technologies for similar purpous. haul plating, ramscoops, deflector dish. not every technology of columbia must be superior to enterprise, different does not mean better or reqired.(but that is only my view point) What i miss from the show would be seeing Archer say "what the ugly thing did you slamm into my ship!" i had another point, but i forgot it while typing this thanks for that episode i enjoyed it

The deflector one-point, two-point, refit one-point thing makes sense if you consider more evolutions in the design. Say, the NX-01 flies out of drydock with its primary hull deflector having only one point (let's call it the Mark 1). Then when Columbia launches, its primary hull deflector has newer and better equipment, and two points on its deflector (the Mark 2). Then by the time Enterprise comes in for its upgrade (not the refit yet), they figured out how to integrate Columbia's better tech, but without having to add a second point (the Mark 3). Then the Enterprise gets its refit and its Mark 3 deflector becomes the backup and the deflector on the new secondary hull (the Mark 4) becomes the main dish.

Not sure why exactly but I immediately assumed the red tracing on the top of the saucer would be something to do with a shielding array. Pretty sure the lightening colour of the hull has a lot to do with the reduced ablative and polarising requirements if shielding tech has been incorporated, sure you'll keep redundancies but it's now a secondary/tertiary line of defence rather than the primary. I think the nature of the 'bolt on' secondary hull also makes total sense, since (as you mention at the end) the entire assembly could be done independant of the actual ship in dry dock and basically just bolted on come refit time. It also speaks to a modular mentality which makes a hell of a lot of sense for something which is still in early development, the primary hull had been thoroughly field tested by that stage after all, and if it ain't broke.... All told, I love this refit concept, and since it's now essentially canon (one of the few positives I can take from ST:P) I just hope we might see an excuse to revisit this classic in the future, even if it's only as a wreck or museum piece.

I think that some what's going on is that human engineering moved towards being able to repair things from the inside, a realization that warp cores engines are too unstable so they need to be jetisinable, and they hadn't developed the linear core yet, so that meant an entire section of the ship would have to be abandoned (a ship likely blew up). Also, I've noted that warp engines are narrower when the ship is longer in proportion to its width, so that might be how warp bubble geometry works. Also, you guys spend WAY too much time looking at this stuff and I love it . Keep up the good work.

In the pilot 'Broken Bow' Archer told Trip that he scratched the paint when the Inspection Pod scrapped along the hull, which was funny as I doubted the ship would be painted, as it would be scratched all the time after being hit with particles while travelling through space. We already know that metals are of varying color and combining different materials into a composite, could also change the color. With advances in composite materials, the hull's could change over time.

the refit design makes sense. the lower second could easily be built while the Enterprise was out. the ship gets recalled at the end of the fifth year and this section is added upgrading the ship to the new warp 6-7 design. it would've been interesting if the refit had the NCC-01 USS Enterprise making it the first ship of the newly formed Federation.

the likely reason for the glowing on the NX pre-refit Warp Nacelles probably has to do with a seeming lack of supplies and research at first, recall that the Vulcans had essentially held the Humans back on Warp Field development along with multiple other fields of engineering so the Humans needed to get creative or try to cut corners on things. So while the technology might exist to make the NX-Class better, they had a lot of technological gaps that they needed to try overcoming (such as Grappler arms instead of Tractor Beams, Energized Hull Plating instead of Shield Generators, etc.), essentially when the NX-01 was sent out on its mission to Klingon Space, the ship was still "Skeletal" and had remained that way for a long period of time while the NX-02 was being built due to the fact that _Enterprise_ was constantly needed in space in order to help mediate with other species and to explore the wider galaxy, having to make-do with whatever they could find on hand and whatever allies and friends they would make in order to stay afloat and ahead of their adversaries. It would very likely be around the time of the establishment and solidification of the United Federation of Planets that technology between the Andorians, Vulcans, and Tellarites could be actively shared with the Humans that would allow for the NX-Refit to properly take place.

I'm glad you pointed out that the refit seems to be done as if the in-universe engineers knew that the Constitution was the next one and they needed to fill the design gap. To me, a more natural addition would be something like the Intrepid class or the Sovereign class, i.e. attach the stuff to the main hull with no neck, either between the two "tails" or right under that warp stabilizer. I can see why they didn't do that (too 24th century style, people are already complaining that the NX look too advanced to be more primitive than the Constitution, etc), but that's what happens whan you do a prequel. If we'd really like to be nitpicking, to me a natural engineering evolution of human starships would be something that at the beginning is only the engineering hull (which of course can't be called like that, I'm just using the term for clarity for clarity), then it gets widened somewhere on the front to add a bit more room, then finally a proper saucer gets added in the same place where the engineering hull was widened in the previous class to create a separation between engineering/cargo holds/shuttle bays and living quarters/crew facilities/labs, and finally the neck is added for the hulls separation functionality and possibly something else (high power warp core interfering with some other equipments?). Again, I can see why they did the opposite, as the saucer is so iconic for Star Trek, but the whole logic feels a bit odd.

The secondary hull gives the ship character. The original is still regarded as a flipped Akira class and let's be honest it pretty much is. The secondary hull and the way the pylons are connected to it as well as to the primary hull gives the ship some much needed uniqueness. This actually looks like something that could have evolved into the Enterprise we all know but still pretty different. I mean even from a design standpoint it looks as if the metal used for the pylons wasn't durable enough to just stick out all the way from the secondary hull so they are attached to the saucer section as well for support. Something they obviously didn't need anymore with with 1701 and decades of experience in space travel and probably more durable material. Gives the ship more of a functional look with the slight hint of aesthetic they will be going for later.

I took the enhanced nacelle armor on the conny and the refit as a defensive rather than propulsion based choice, as the nx style nacelle was easily damaged, and then as we get into the TNG the reversion to simpler nacelle design could be attributed to improved materials.

I like to think of the lack of secondary hull as a huge disadvantage, and the addition as a great advantage to allow for a safer, less energy demanding warp flight capability. I think of the ships that lack a nav deflector (Franklin, NX) as using a specialized mode of the deflector shields that was prohibitively resource intensive, allowing only for shorter times spent at warp. Plus, ships would drop out of warp with depleted shields, leaving them at a defensive disadvantage. Then, we have the nav deflectors, which makes the difference analogous to using GPU hardware accelerated graphics vs software graphics. Now they have nav deflectors and boom, they're on the way towards exploring the final frontier!

When it comes to consistency for Star Trek ship designs, it starts with the NX which looks kind of industrial, then you look at the TOS ships and they look more styled, and it makes sense, the NX was Earths first warp 5 ship, and since it started off as a one-off it makes sense that it would look more industrial, and with the beginnings of the Federation, it makes sense Starfleet would make newer ships have good style, and the 2 eras could have easily transitioned, then Discovery happened and the ships look like Kelvin ships, just 10 years before TOS. basically Discovery ruined the flow of style.

One criticism I have of this refit is that it has the two deflector dishes. The secondary hull with the larger deflector dish would surely make the original one redundant so I would want to take that space for the original dish and replace it with a weapons array which would make sense in that this ship is supposed to be launched into a war. I would expect that with the secondary hull added it would have more space for engines possibly allowing a higher warp speed, possibly up to warp 7.

On this specific design, and the TOS Connie, on THOSE I prefer just the inboard grills vs on both sides. Odd, I know, but even given my own personal preference, some ship designs just look better with only the inboard grills.

Do you think they totally replaced the warp core for this refit, or added some sort of extra core in the secondary hull? Personally, I think a vertical core running through the neck (like the Connie refit) and hooking up to the original power feeds would be a reasonable assumption for the extra power given by the new hull.

imo both itterations look great, the NX-01 being more of a clear "not yet TOS Connie" while the NX-01 refit feels like a "natural" progression towards it, as a refit should do, it adds things that are needed, like the secondary hull for more storage room and newer/enhanced systems like the dedicated Deflector Dish and maybe even some experimental tech which most often need alot space since its not yet optimised. i realy loved the NX-01 when first saw it in the show, it felt fitting, but the NX-01 Refit i instantly liked too. gladly we dont need to pick, thats something i simply couldnt in this case, both have their very own pros and cons, but without a daubt both look absolutely great in my book

Re: hull color. The original Jeffries Constitution coloring was more akin to a naval vessel, which are painted haze gray so as to visually blend in with atmospheric haze. Since then, with the "Aztec" pattern and hull plates spacecraft in Star Trek seem to almost have a more aviation-oriented coloring like the US' B-29 bomber from WWII. In this, I see the NX-01 more as an analog to a "test bed" for new technology with basic capabilities for speed and not a ship of the line armed to represent and defend Earth's interests.

If memory serves (it's been over 20 years since I last looked!) the schematics for the Galaxy class actually still has a saucer section backup deflector installed, it's just entirely internal by then. Considering the saucer section was detachable and was capable of doing so whilst the ship was still at warp (it couldn't maintain the warp field but it could still ride it) there would HAVE to be independant saucer section deflectors of some sort or the whole thing would obliterate itself the moment it dropped out of the nacelle's fields.

The NX-01 refit is genius, from both real-world and in-universe perspectives. Want to add a larger M/ARC to the ship? Tack on a hull enlargement. But enlarging the existing hull would compromise structural integrity and require tearing it apart. So you don't change the existing hull, you add onto it with some pylons. Want to enlarge your garage? It's integrated into the overall structure of your house, you'd have to tear off the entire front facade and open the whole house up to the weather for months while you add more structural elements. But if you build an entirely separate garage as a free-standing structure, and connect it to the existing house with a small substructure like an enclosed breezeway, then you only have to make a small hole in the original structure, and only one room of the house will be open to the weather during the connection phase, and the connection will only take a few days instead of weeks or months. Yet even with bulking the ship's mass up by something like 30%, it's still sleek and speedy looking (yes, that means nothing to a spacecraft, but it's an aesthetics thing - people like spacecraft that look aerodynamic). Personally, I would have ditched the original deflector dish and closed up the hull at that point, and opened up the after portion of the hull to create a single large hangar deck, like the one on the Galaxy Class, for those pods and shuttles, rather than making them approach two narrow entries. Remove the original M/ARC, and suddenly you've got enough room at the stern to create a huge hangar and increase the auxiliary craft complement in number, size, and variety. I would have made the undercut a little less severe and added a second launch bay in the older style at the bottom of the secondary hull, and added a pair of phase cannons to the underside of the fantail (after all of the combat Enterprise saw over the run of the series, extra weapons would not have been out of line, and the new M/ARC would provide more than enough power for an extra pair). A rear-facing sensor dish on the fantail a la the Federation class dreadnought form the 70s would have looked cool, too. It could have been a smaller version of the original dish from the front of the NX-01 saucer, in the same style.

I like the progression of the hull shape, adding that bottom hull to increase endurance and power, with the ability to eject that warp core was a step ahead. Painting it like a ship that came 80 years later is a but of a faux pas. I would rather see it looking like something added in haste just before the Romulan War to upgrade the power to support shields and heavier weapons. Easier to build a sort of bolt on pod than to try and make a whole new ship. When you get down to it the engineering hull changes the NX- experimental ship into an NCC- commissioned ship of the line. I can visualize several different passages going thru the struts and neck and it still has that 'learning about naval architecture' vibe to it as well and this is an add on to correct a deficiency that could only be answered by adding a hull. The shuttle bay being eliminated to put in the neck and moved into the e-hull makes sense.

The deflector on the primary hull was an oversight when the designer was slapping on the secondary hull. The secondary hull looks like it was attached as an afterthought and the same afterthought blinded them to thje need to remove the original deflector dish and remodify the primary hull.
