Hi everyone, In this introduction to working with veneer project, I used Hawaiian Monkeypod Veneer to make this modern bookcase. If you’ve been thinking about working with veneer, this is a good project to get started with. As you can see, it’s a simple box with some molding to cover the ends of the plywood and then veneered. Here’s a link to the Project plans if you’d like to give it a shot. jonpeters.com/product/veneer-bookcase/ Thanks for watching, Jon

Jon - thanks for showing the ironing trick. I also have been using the nonflammable contact cement and hadnt seen any issues until recently when i was making a dresser. I had the same thing happen to me where the contact cement was just not sticking especially around the edges. I definitely think it has to do with the amount of time you allow it to dry. I ended up just using a ton of elbow grease to get it to stick where it could and use clamps to try and get the edges to remain in contact until they bonded. For the edges that didnt, i just put a drop or two of super glue. Will definitely try the iron next time though
@JonPetersArtHome3 ай бұрын
For Sure! … I was a little surprised because I didn’t have the issue on the sides or back… Just goes to show no matter how long you’ve been doing something like this there’s always a potential surprise.

Great job. I've noticed you have used contact cement for veneers instead of glue and a vacuum press. have had any issues just using the contact cement where it starts to lift off the edges over time. The ironing hack is great idea. thanks
@JonPetersArtHome3 ай бұрын
Thanks! Generally, I’m veneering cabinets that are already built so I’m not sure how I could use a vacuum press. I like the idea of building a simple plywood box and then dressing it up with a pretty veneer… Just a simple way to make some thing ordinary look very nice.

Another great project. I think you convinced me to get solid wood instead of edge banding to cover the plywood edge. Trying to make the edge banding look good is my least favorite part of any project like this.

Did you use that same water based contact cement on the sides as well? TBH I’ve had horrible results with water based contact cement myself. It might vary between brands too. Here in CA it’s getting harder and harder to find solvent based products so I would love to find a dependable product. Not that I’ve smuggled in finishes and glues from out of state. 😮

I did, and didn’t have any issues… I’m not sure what happened, but the iron worked, and I’ve had similar issues before, but not quite as bad. Maybe I’ll revisit this project in a year and see how it’s doing.
