As for the epoxy part, what I do is use epoxy paste. Spread the paste over and into the kerfs using a plastic mud knife. Bend it and clean out the excess. This makes the adhesion full and fills up all the spaces creating very solid joints. You can mix the epoxy paste with the wood dust that came off the kerfs so it blends better with the wood. You can also use the liquid epoxy as shown in the video but this may run out of the kerfs. Mixing it w the wood dust will minimize the runout.

that table saw fence contraption looks pretty neato! does the Kerf bend have to be with hardwood?
@dairybarnwoodworking2152 жыл бұрын
No, the kerf bending could be done with plywood as well. Probably not possible with MDF, particleboard, etc however.

Did the satin polyurethane hide the kerf cuts, or are they still noticeable
@Sneaka_Freak202125 күн бұрын
Hey! Do you think edge banding it, instead of going thru all that bs with epoxy, would be alright? Maybe with some curly maple or purple heart to give it so contrast? What a beauty you have there. I wanna give this a try.

Great concept.. Did you start in the middle of the board then do equal cuts on each side? I counted 25 cuts. How far apart are each cut? what is the expoxy brand you used tks greg...i tried a 3/4 in piece of oak before using good wood that was 24 inches in length. I was about 1/16 of inch from top with about 1/8 for each space. I believe you used 3/4 inch and 24 inches in length. when I counted the kerfs in your board it was about 25 so i figured mine would need the same amount. As i bent it after the 25 cut, the board barely made it around and cracked in the middle.. any suggestions? tks greg
@dairybarnwoodworking2155 жыл бұрын
Honestly can’t remember the number of cuts but I believe the width between was right around 3/16”. I just start in the middle and start making cuts moving away from the center until it folds around the way I like. Epoxy was just basic table top epoxy from Lowe’s but there are a ton of options for that. The kerf of your saw blade and thickness of the material will determine the required number of cuts also. My board was 3/4 thick walnut. Oak would be tough to do this with because of how fiberous it is. Make all of your cuts then get a spray bottle of water and spray the side with no cuts then put a cotton cloth over the wet wood. Then run a hot clothes iron over it. This will put some steam into the wood making it more plyable. Now very slowly and carefully start bending it. If it sounds or feels like it’s going to break add more water and heat until it bends.
@christinafox-sencaj11095 жыл бұрын
Dairy Barn Woodworking ok good to know about oak. I really like the concept. Does the board need to be a minimum of 24 inches to work Like in your video.? My blade is 1/8 inch thick. What is the distance between each cut have to be? Tks
@dairybarnwoodworking2155 жыл бұрын
Christina Fox-Sencaj there really is no set distance between the kerfs. The more space between the kerfs the larger the radius of the bend will be. Also there is no set length the board has to be. It’s all a matter of preference.

I liked the GoPro ride "through" the planer. How do you calculate where to start/end the kerf cuts to get the board to bend at a predetermined/desired mark? Say you want your bend to start at 7" from the end at a 90 degree angle where do you start/mid/end kerf cuts?
@dairybarnwoodworking2156 жыл бұрын
TXstang347 so you can absolutely do the math and I have done that on previous projects that made a complete circle but on something simple like this I just sort of wing it and make kerf cuts until I get the bend I want. Then I measure from the start of the cuts and make a cut then measure from the end of the kerf cuts and make that cut. Not sure if that makes sense or not.
@TXstang3476 жыл бұрын
Dairy Barn Woodworking not exactly lol. My best guess on my first attempt I made 7 kerf cuts. The first 3 cuts below the point I wanted it to bend 90 degrees at and the last 3 cuts above the bend, but it's not quite bending where I'd like. Adding more cuts leaves a few on the ends with an open gap that serve no function and probably weakening the structure. Any ideas on spacing, depth or how many cuts to achieve a certain degree of bend? Like your trapezoid seems pretty precise. Was that just trial and error?
@dairybarnwoodworking2156 жыл бұрын
TXstang347 so let’s say you want to bend 3/4” material with an inside radius of 2 1/2” 90 degrees. What I do is make a drawing in sketchup. From the drawing I can measure the length of the inside arc from start of arc to end of arc then I measure the outside arc(which would have a radius of 3 1/4”) from start of arc to end of arc. Now take that outside arc length and subtract that inside arc length. This will tell you the amount of material you need to remove with kerf cuts so take that and divide by the thickness of your saw kerf which will give you the number of cuts required. Probably clear as mud 😀. Did you watch my other video on this? I think I explain it there.

Very nice looking holder. Two tips however. First, there are no pictures in the beginning or end to show off the piece. I would highly recommend some nice shots at the beginning. It drives me nuts when people try to make you wait till the end to see the finished piece. I usually skip those videos. Second, the bending wasn't very clear. Why did you fill in the epoxy from the ends and not just fill the slots from the open sides?

Another tip which I haven't seen anyone else commenting, is you need to talk consistently in the same voice level. Your in-between mumbling makes it hard to follow you and makes you sound worse than you are. Don't mumble please. And as the others said, get a tripod for your general shots. If you need to move in close or do shots like the gopro on the planer, then look into gimbals. They make the camera stay steady when minor shaking occurs around it. They can also be made DIY, so you don't have to bust the bank on one. Also, you may want to look into Bent Lamination. It would make your project here easier to do

You can get the same result with just a piece of 1x4 maple from Home Depot, a table saw, and an orbital sander. I don't know why you would need to joint, plane and dress all the sides when they aren't going to join to anything. It's like you don't need running shoes to run but it's nice when you have them.
