Fun project! Cheap saws were what kept me from enjoying woodworking when I first started out. Good saws are a joy. Ironically, I would say you need to be more skilled to use cheap ones well.

I should add that I love my Japanese saws--I just hate the crappy saws I've gotten at the big box stores.

I like the sharpenable saws. There are some cheap hardpoint saws in the local woodshop I often go to, but they have become quite dull over the years (I bet other people there also use them on metal a lot…) and someone desparately needs to go to the hardware store and buy new ones. With my sharpenable saws, I can sharpen them any time I like, even at midnight when the stores are closed - I'm more of a night owl anyways, so this is when I mostly do woodworking. And I like the thought of not letting good steel go to waste. After all, I have more than enough card scrapers and scratch stocks, and still more than enough old saw blades left for more 😅 Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I've got an old Stanley hard point saw that I bought in the late '90s, long before I became interested in hand tool woodworking. It cuts on both the push and pull stroke, or so the packaging said. It definitely does better on the push stroke. There was something my circular saw wouldn't do, so I bought this thing. For years, I was convinced that it was crap and wouldn't cut anything well. I only used it when absolutely necessary. After I actually learned the proper grip and mechanics of using a hand saw, from your videos, I discovered that it actually works pretty well. Now, I like to use it for rough dimensioning, sometimes.

I rely on the cheap saws for a couple things. I generally breakdown large stock outside, my boat is being built outside and I live on a small farm with critters that love to disassemble stuff. So when I drop it , bang into something or need to cut something abrasive I don't whine, snivel and cry, also any of my family can pick up another on a run to town. Also my little "Aw crap" bench/stool/ tool transport is sized for hold one.

Nice piece, i love it ! I would have cut it with a turning frame saw (the 70cm long ones we have in continental Europe, idk if you have one), saves a bit of wood if you cut several arches, but whatever 🙂
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
If the piece were thinner I'd probably jump at that. But the amount of time it would take to cut two inch thick wood would would be considerably more and far less enjoyable. But that's just my list.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo indeed it's much faster to split the wood 😄 but vs a ripsaw, i think a full-size turning saw would not be that slow. i was just wondering if you knew/had this type of saw. I love your content btw 🙂

you can use a hole saw with out the dead screw and then carve it. but in any method it will mean carving it.

I just dislike the wastefulness of hard point saws. I'd rather spend a few minutes sharpening than just toss the saw when it's dull. Sharpening is a skill you have to learn in woodworking regardless, why not do it for saws too?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
I would generally agree. But one $5 hardpoint saw usually saves me about three sharpenings. And if he sharpening takes me 10 minutes that means it saved me a half hour. And in my book that's a good investment.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo I totally get it. But to me, part of the joy of hand tools is breaking out of the production mindset. There is also some amount of time associated with buying the saws. I guess I see the hobby as including taking care of the tools I use, and sharpening my saws is part of that.
