Typically on a bass amp the "active" "passive" inputs just means the former has a pad to prevent clipping in the front end of the amp... sort of like the high and low inputs on guitar amps.

Superb video, I can see a summer project for myself there. Bass tube amps are indeed underrepresented. I did a video on my rare Italian amp that's turning 50 this year, and it has been my reliable companion for 4 years. The rich, warm tones it produces are unmatched, and it performs beautifully with any instrument. Transistor amps are great too, but they'll never really be my soft spot. Your video really brings out the importance of these amps. Great job and keep it up!

SO good to see you back, Dan. Tired of seeing $3,000 basses with the "Wow, what a steal !" under it. I love the VU meters and the tarp to paint on is a great idea, too ! The truck bed liner paint is PERFECT. I'd try a 410 instead of a 115. I thought you said 250w, not 25w. For a tube bass amp, that's about the bare minimum.

Yeah, my 25 year old 500 watt Carvin head and full stack was like a megabomb back in the day, but nowadays, 500 watts is like preschool level power! At least for bass head power. This head SOUNDS amazing. And truthfully, these days, aren't we recording more than playing out? If I turn up my Carvin, I get angry calls from the USGS... I'd like to be able to record with this head, I'd turn it right up to the break up point, and let my playing technique take it over into break up on peaks, all without triggering local seismographs (and the neighborhood's dogs).

As teen in the 1960s many lead guitarists in bands used the Ampeg portaplext with an added Altec Lansing twelve inch speaker in it. I myself used a Fender bassman amp from the early 1960s that had 2 twelve inch speakers and two channels. I played lead guitar though it like many others. It was a great amp and so was the Ampeg portaplex bass amp. I was also great for bass, of course.

You can build small cigar box type amps that run on battery power. But anything this big, I’m not sure you’d want to carry a car battery around with you 😅
@MrFedoss3 жыл бұрын
DIY guys usually take class D amp boards (like TPA3110 or any other, it depends) and put a preamp before it (it may be board or pedal). Amp may look like an Electro-Harmonix 22 Caliber (pedal) or head/combo, as you wish to make it for your use.
@snap-off53833 жыл бұрын
The first thing all amps do is convert the AC to DC. Pretty much any amp could be run from battery, only variable would be duration. Some amps use 40 volts dc and for sure +15 and -15 for the opamps so you'd need a higher voltage battery than a car battery.

Hi @Dan, another great build you made! Sounds awesome. But there are some misconceptions (if I can tell you, ofc I don't want to teach you bdw): 1) passive/active inputs: I don't know if in this kit they are swapped but generally passive input is the normal one, whilst active one is attenuated by 3 or more db. This is because active pickups are hotter so if you plug in as is it would make the amp distort faster. 2) 6v6/6l6: they are output tubes. They comes from the same type of tubes, so very similar sounding, the main difference is the output power: 6v6 are able to drive more power, so ampeg model I guess it was rated maybe 60 to 120W? The same thing you would see in Fender guitar amps, or similar, in which output power is set using multiple tubes or swapping from 6l6 to 6v6. 3) I would have used a decoupler, like an op amp, to decouple your voltmeters, because this way I think you are introducing a load effect either in input or in output. In input it can distort a bit your signal because of the linear nature of the spring load meter, whilst in output it would change at least the impedence of DI out which is a bad thing because you want it fixed and perfect since you tipically use it to record. 4) maybe your first speaker is rated to a high power. It's important not only to match impedence but also use a power that would not exceed power limit ofc but that is on the same range, otherwise you would not have enough current to run correctly your speaker and I guess that's the case. You can make a similar trick of what you made, making less impedence making two in parallel but using the same output port. For example have the speaker parallel to 4 ohm and still using 8 ohm out. This way you are sorta doubling the current you gave to your speaker, just don't do further because you can ruin it. I drive a 4x12 rated 400w with a 8w amp using this trick. Anyway, great job Dan, I appreciate your videos!

The active and passive is for active and passive basses. That's why it's thinner sounding. My Stingray 5 runs on a 9v (active) and P bass is passive and the tone is totally different. Try getting an active bass through that input, I'm really interesting to hear what you think of the change in tone but I wouldn't put an active bass through the passive input as you'll overload the circuit and it will sound all gainy and crappy (plus you will probably damage your unit). Good luck brotha! Enjoying the content 👍

As a note on the passive/active inputs. They can actually be very useful. In my band the bassist has a passive and an active bass. On his amp head it's just a switch and not two separate inputs. But it's really handy when he switches because you can balance the levels between an active and passive bass super easy, without messing up the sound and annoying the sound guy haha
@GunsandGuitars3 жыл бұрын
I guess I didn’t explain this well. I understand what active and passive inputs are. These inputs are really just like rhythm/lead inputs. The active input should be lower to compensate for active pickups. But that’s not the case. The active input here boosts the signal, overdrives easier, and cuts bass. It really is just a lead channel.

Not sure what he plays on, but always loved that sound. The way it bumps it's almost like a horn, which is really cool. My main instrument is guitar, but I picked up a drum set in my late teens and added that skill to my repertoire. The only thing I need to complete a band and do full recordings at home is the bass. I have an old Squire P-bass I'm going to try to learn on. I also have an old silver face Bassman Ten I inherited from my father that I used to play my guitar through with an MXR Equalizer and Boss OS/2 overdrive distortion pedal. I loved that thing for power chords because it sounded like the they were bouncing. Not a great setup for playing solos though. Too flat and not enough gain. Not quite big enough for live settings. This inspired a bit of a hybrid build- I am making a bass amp with a Portaflex front end but with a 60 watt power section from a pair of 6550s. I already have the power amp section I'm pulling from an old Bogen PA amp, complete with a chunky output transformer. Theoretically it should sound about as close to a real Portaflex as your KLD here. (although interestingly the classic Ampeg SVT uses 6550s, so...)

"id love a 50 watt version of this" well two 6L6s usually make 40 to 50 watts of output the fact that your only getting 25 watts from them is sad cuz that means the circuit is designed to run them really cold or really inefficiently to get 25 watts out of tubes that can make 40 or 50. if it were me id just change the power amp circuit to get around 45 watts out of them and change the output transformer to handle the higher power if needed. but i know you dont know as much about amp modding. tho you prolly could try to learn to mod it by getting the schematic and post it to a amp forum site and ask some builders how you can get more watts out of it

How did you mount the amp in your enclosure? just by the front screws? I have one of these and am building an enclosure. The mounting holes on the chassis are threaded for a machine screw - but your video didn't show how its mounted in the box. can you explain what you did? My Thoughts/notes about the amp: it sounds great, but the tone stack sucks. After putting a MXR 10 band EQ pedal in front of it, it can really be dialed in to good sounding tone. I have had the best recordings from it with a 16ohm speaker. My next steps with it are to add in a master volume (to drive the preamp tube a bit more) and hopefully clean up the tone stack to something usable. For the price, this amp kicks ass, however, after new tubes and material for an enclosure, it was closer to 400$ total cost. I might have opted for the ampeg Micro-CL stack, at just 100$ more (than my total cost) - although solid state, it sounds really good for recording. I might get one anyway. This amp is awesome in its own right, and is completely repairable/ customizable by a knowledgeable technician. That's something you can't get from a solid state, IC based amp.

You know what kills a solid state amp? A direct short across the output. You know what saves your vacuum tube output transformer without a speaker plugged in? A direct short across the output. At present, I have an ultra-light Acoustic brand short stack with twin 1x12" neodymium magnet speakers and a 300 watt digital head with a tube preamp. Love it! The cabs weigh in at about 25 pounds each and the head is like 5 pounds! Great tone at any volume from bedroom to concert hall! Fits in any car, even a mini-Cooper or a Prius!... not that I'd be caught dead in a Prius... Hahaha ;D That's why I mentioned the big SVT. My little digital amp is just as powerful as that 80 pound SVT Classic! Gotta love technology :) Enjoy the new toy, brother. Considering that you are running this stack at 4 ohms, you should be getting 50 watts already. But, a 50 watt model in the same configuration would give you 100 watts. So, I do get your point. Personally, I have a Fender Jazz and a 5 string active Jackson. The fiver is to keep up with keyboard players and the 300 watt head is to keep up with the drummers! Hahaha ;D Never been a fan of keyboard players that step all over my bass lines or drummers who do not understand the concept of dynamic contrast. Drummers need three things... groove, meter and dynamics. And, I'm officially rambling again! Adventure ever on brother, Phat :)

@@GunsandGuitars Both are amazing gig worthy amps. TBH, the amp in the Ampeg Rocket Bass combo would work well for this rig at 200 watts. But, the only way to get one is from the 1X15 combo AFAIK. Gotta watch the ohmage when amp shopping. Some give the wattage at 8 ohms, some at 4 ohms and others at 2 ohms. Ampeg generally gives wattage ratings at 4 ohms for some of the smaller amps, like your portaflex... those are listed at 8 ohms... I think. That makes your amp 50 watts in your 4 ohm set up. Take my old solid state Rickenbacker head that I had all through school... rated at 120 watts and it drove the two Electro-Voice speakers rather well at 8 ohms. But, she was a stereo amp that was actually intended to run at 4 ohms in stereo! Now, I never ran any stereo effects. But, I did drop the big 2X15 EV cab for two old Acoustic brand 4X10 cabs and that Ric head really cranked! In fact, those 4X10 cabs were the beginning of the phatbassanchor tone as it still sounds today. Phat tone from my bass that anchors the band. That is the origin of the screen name I've had since myspace and email first appeared on this cool new thing called the internet! Hahaha ;D But, the actual tone was born the day I first tried running two 4X10 cabs at 4 ohms. I'm sure you noticed the rich bottom that you got when connecting the second 1X10 cab to your mini-stack. It's the same with my current rig with the two 1X12's. The tone immediately grows fatter with the second cab. Four ohms is where the magic happens, IMHO. So, I really dig your mini-stack

@georgerobartes59893 жыл бұрын
Hi , I'm not sure how I got here but to answer your question , the speakers are run in parallel which halves the resistance, but not the impedance seen by the output transformer. If yout amp has a pair of common connected output jacks at 8 Ohm , just go straight from your jack outs to the 2 speakers and they will be in parallel at 4 Ohm . Parallel halves the resistance. If your building cabinets I recommend a plate that uses pairs of jacks and pairs of speakon connectors. That way you can go from a single 8 ohm out to one cabinet and then piggyback the other . I would add an active sub to this set up and run it from a Direct Out from the preamp . Most home entertainment subs like the old Logitech or Celestions run a 10 " at 175 W . You won't hear it much but you will feel it and it does not matter where you place it . I use a Logitech sub that has a 10" TangBand which are great for the job . The problem with tube bass amps is they should run more metal and copper in the output transformer than a guitar and I use old 30W transformers to rewind for 5W combos . A guitar OT cannot generate the lows that hit the gut and you have to wind them yourself to get down to that 20Hz frequency. It's cheaper to run a sub as a satellite in the band ( like behind the drummer !) to shift the air and shake out those lows , otherwise its my 4 x 10 Celestion ported cabinet I built . The preamp in my bassamp design runs 2 x 2C51s or the cheaper Russian 6n3p-e tubes which are really hi fi tubes but less prone to distort so you can push the amp harder and still have plenty of headroom before break up . Historically none of the classic bass amps e.g. Fender Bassman were bass amps for these reasons and were always used with guitars , which is why most bassamps are solid state thanks to the tube like sound of FETs and no need for a huge output transformer. If you want to build a great sounding bass amp take a look at the late Albert Kreuzer s FET Bassamp . It's pretty easy to build easy on the pocket and has a great following on the Internet with mods . Mine runs a couple of VU meters from a simple circuit , has an inbuilt tuner and EQ, and it works with any slave power amp or direct into PA mixer . My standby 100W head is a 70s HH Bassamp which is stunning to look at and listen to and noise free , but becoming collectable now . I cant think of any 70s band that didn't include a piece of HH equipment.

3 comments: A speaker+enclosure that only goes down to 45 hz may have problems with the notes below G# on the bottom string--will almost certainly have trouble with the low B string of a 5 string bass. This can be fixed by choosing the right speaker and enclosure-paying attention to the Theile-Small stuff and tuning the cabinet. This won't be important if you don't have that 5th string. A 25 watt bass amp will not make it out beyond rehersal--unless you may have a temendously effecient speaker (I've got a JBL K-140 for heavy lifting, and still use a 150 watt amp). The new Ampeg Portaflex head uses 6L6s--as do all of the vintage heads from the B-12, B-15 etc. You can't get more than 22 clean watts out of 2 6V6s in push-pull.
@GunsandGuitars3 жыл бұрын
All the sound demos I did with this thing were in BEAD tuning, so it hits the low B just fine. But I agree with everything else you said. Don’t get too hung up on the translation of frequency to pitch. There’s so much timbre on an instrument like electric bass that you’ll hear all notes just fine. Similar to how bumping 60hz will also add more balls to an open D string, even though that’s a way lower frequency than the actual pitch.

I mean 6L6's work in a pinch, but 7027 and 7059s were what they used

Hey Dan do you think painting a head with that bed liner and then painting it would work, do you think it would keep the second color of paint on it? I want to retolex my jcm900 head but it seems kind of a hassle after seeing this video I was wondering if that bed liner with a coat of paint on top of it would work better
@GunsandGuitars3 жыл бұрын
I think it would work just fine as long as you give it it’s full cure time before painting over it

General rule of thumb for me on bass is go with at least double the wattage of your guitar players amp, shouldn’t be a problem being heard in a mix then, unless your drummer beats the drums like they owe them money.

Did you try 6550's for the output tubes yet? that would sound more like an SVT tone.

That is the same thinking as the original Fender Bassman tube amps. That model is more frequently used by guitarists than bassists! Hahaha ;D Pretty sure you are spot on with your comment. Adventure on friend, Phat

Going in I thought this would be an actual kit you wire up yourself, bit disappointed it's not that. I know how to build a box, I don't know how to wire an amp.
