I know you already had a lot of these holds, but getting some guidance on how to pick and purchase holds for a homewall would be really helpful! All the way from jugs to crimps to foot holds!

@@TomOHalloranAus Epic! I see a lot of people are already upvoting this comment, I think if people left comments on their specific interests about this topic, that would be really helpful! Some things that I would love some insight into are: 1. Which companies are easy to shop for climbing holds online? (I know some are more eccomerce and general consumer focused, while others are more commercial and gym focused) - it seems quite challenging to find holds that are in stock, don't come in a large pack, and are affordable. 2. Wood vs plastic holds 3. Foot chips - why is it so hard to find challenging yet super simple and relatively cheap foot holds?? (I'm thinking small and flat and small and incut simple, rectangle foot chips) 4. Slopers vs crimps vs pinches My 2 cents for U.S. based homewall climbers interested in this is Escape Climbing (and some others that I can't speak to) offers their factory second (defect) boxes they sell by the pound and you can add a note to your order describing everything from the grade you climb to your wall angle, to the types of holds your interested in - this saves so much time and effort in selecting holds - I've ordered these twice from them and have nothing but good things to say! I'd also say that I built my home wall with a very spaced out T-Nut grid and mostly converted all my holds to screw ons which saves a lot of time and effort and gives more flexibility with setting.

Home wall videos get me so psyched to use my own more. I built a 30-degree wall a few years ago when I was only a V2 climber. In hindsight, it's a little crazy to make a massive investment when you're just a beginner .. but I'm glad I did. The holds and setting on the wall evolved as my climbing developed. It's also nice to have around when your partner is a climber, as well as having climber friends over.

That’s awesome! Never to early to make your own playground 😀. Great you were able to evolve the wall and holds as you progressed. 30 degrees is a super nice angle too.

Man that is a sick wall. I really like your point about the grid - I have a moonboard with a spray wall within it, all on the grid and it definitely tends towards a lot of really similar movement. The offset nature of yours makes the hold position in general look so much more interesting and organic. Awesome work.

Nice wall with huge space to climb. But why didn't you build two walls with different angles? Because then you get more opportunities. I don't have much height in my cellar, so I build 30° and 60° wall.
@TomOHalloranAus
@TomOHalloranAus Жыл бұрын
Ahhh you'll see why a second bit of wall didn't go in there now. Let's just say the training garage is not yet complete :). I did try very very hard to find somewhere for a 20 degree wall to fit. But alas, couldn't. It was going to be too cramped. Love the idea of the two walls you've got. That's awesome
@schluppvomgrunenstern7394
@schluppvomgrunenstern7394 Жыл бұрын
@@TomOHalloranAus thanks. It was an idea of a friend, who has just 60°. But with 30 and 60, you've two straight parts facing in the opposite direction, which is nice for toe hooks. If you wanna see it, I can share some pictures.

Psyched to see more board froth on the horizon! All the best from Bishop where I’m getting my arse handed to me on a mini trip before some work (too hot, stuff grades etc etc.) Stunning here though. I painted my board a dark grey, shows the chalk a bit but that comes off well, and I like how it makes especially wood holds pop. Get after it!

@@TomOHalloranAus You should try to get out here. The amount of quality rock plus the variety of it in really quite short distance from Bishop itself is like no other place I’ve ever been. Nails though, really powerful on small holds. Tough grades for the uninitiated I reckon. Nothing that some hats board problems on small holds won’t prepare you for though. 😉

Quick question. Where did you get the mat? Most people I know of who make their own home walls usually just use crash pads. Is it better to have a big mat or just spend the mat-money on more crash pads for both home and outdoor bouldering?

Got the mat from a local climbing gym that closed down recently. I've used second hand mattresses in the past, as well as boulder pads. The good thing with using boulder pads is that you need to buy pads anyway (if you boulder outdoors) and you need to store them somewhere. Using them under the wall as padding is a good option. I love having the big mat, but boulder pads have been saving my but under the wall for the three years prior :)
