A MiSTer is an incredible investment that keeps getting better and better. I went with the digital IO board since I don’t have a CRT setup going and because of nice features such as the integrated power switch. Many cores can also switch to using true analog-out using a cheap HDMI to VGA cable. (Lookup having alternate INI files for how to easily switch between the two as needed.) Since your case is so modular, I’d definitely consider switching to a digital IO board and selling the analog one. Some of the craziest things I’ve seen from it, other than the WIP Saturn core, are multiplayer side-by-side gameboy games and cores that support rewind and save-states, since the implementation is completely different from the same feature in traditional emulators. There’s also a variety of the NES core that can play prerecorded inputs in-game, like having your own TAS-Bot. Finally, you might be interested in Super Attract mode. It lets the system randomly cycle through games when idle.

You could install a classic looking stainless steel button right on the front of the wood block, and drill a hole back and up routing the wires right under one of the boards, and wire it up so that the + power goes through the button, to both of the power jacks. The input could simply be a panel mount barrel jack glued to the back of the system, or even drilled into the wood the same as the button if you want a really clean look

It definitely needs a metal toggle, possibly one that's fashioned after an antique light switch that has 'on' and 'off' in old, chipped paint. You could also have it use brown cables to look like those old-fashioned extension cords, which would look great with the wooden base.

Pro tip. Go to a fabric store and buy yourself a bit of silk to use as a dust cover for that mister. The open air case looks rad, but cleaning dust off electronics is a huge pain. I use the same method for my guitar pedalboard. Saves you a lot of cleaning, and protects your gear when you're not using it.

What a great build and combines my two favourite hobbies, wood working and retro gaming. I think I’m going to have to try this. Quick tip though use a Awl instead of a pencil for marking those locations for drilling you’ll have a much better time.

My favorite cases are the aluminum passively cooled cases sold my MiSTer Addons. I have two MiSTer setups in sliver anodized finish cases with all addon boards and parts. These will remain my favorites until (or if) someone makes a fully CNC machined aluminum case that I can actually buy. For now, having a CNC machined case is a dream and may never become a reality. If they do become something you can buy expect a long wait to get one.

Awesome work on the case! For the buttons, 3 small holes in the top acrylic and 3 lengths of clear acrylic to act as extended buttons could look nice, as for power - you could add a push toggle button on the front opposite to the mister logo. Cut a channel on the bottom going front to back, drill the opening for the button on the front, and drill vertically from the bottom side connecting the channel and the button hole. Similar to how "Ben's Worx" does his power button installs for his light up acrylic art. You could even salvage a button from some vintage knackered hifi for extra authenticity!

For an authentic feel, use a donor snes, take the switch part, cut out a piece of acryl, place the switch, connect to the right voltage, link them to the devices, get a nice remarkable click whenever you turn on this thing!

Great video! Though it's worth pointing out that you do *not* need the IO board to get quality, lag free output to a CRT. A simple HDMI to VGA converter does this via the "direct video" mode in MiSTer. I use this mode to send RGB to my PVM and it works great.

I know that what the big thing that MiSTer devs are working on is cores for PS1, N64, and Saturn, which I think are the theoretical limit of what consumer-level FPGAs are capable of.

N64 has been pretty much ruled out, its running at too high of frequencies. Saturn is coming along quite well though and Playstation still trucking along albeit at a slower pace.

This looks gorgeous, well done for giving me some cool ideas to 3d print and mock up! I would say the ooonly small thing I'd suggest was what you said in terms of the power switch, ideally a brushed steel power button on the front of the wood itself, with an LED light for when it's on. The other thing could be to round off the edges on the plexi so that it matches the curves of the wood beneath. Either way, a fantastic project and really nicely filmed.

Check the digital IO board if you want a power switch. The switch would end up on the outside of your build if I’m not mistaken. It doesn’t have analogue out, but you can also get that from the DE-10 hdmi port using a cheap dac. Check the vga to bnc cables for resistors if your PVM needs that. This has to do with the sync voltage, which can damage your TV/PVM crt in some cases!

Nice build! I've been building sandwich MiSTers using milled/anodized aluminum plates. I've also had things like PC Engine, Genesis, and Super NES logos UV printed on them depending on the friend that I've built them for. (Mine has the PC Engine Logo on blue Anodize, which while not an accurate PC Engine color looks pretty nice :D ) They go pretty well with HiFi stuff too. Mine usually sits next to the turntable and tube preamp in my living room when I use it there, and doesn't look out of place.

This may be a bit late but the Analog IO board has a header that provides the same functions as the 3 buttons at the top. Just beside the buttons you should see a 5 pin header, it is sandwiched between the buttons and a 7 pin header, this header is the one you want.

While it doesn't have as many USB ports, I used the BlisSTer board from Bliss-box instead of the USB board. It has a power button built-in and also includes two LLAPI ports that allows for more accurate controller input polling than USB's 1ms fast polling.

Nice video! Concerning hooking it up to the PVM: you don't need a special cable. You can just use a normal VGA to BNC cable. The sync levels would not be suitable for, say, a SCART TV, but it's fine for your PVM.

@@MachoNachoProductions no problem! Oh, and also be sure to activate Composite Sync. This can be done by manually editing the Mister.ini or using one of the default scripts from the menu. The VGA to BNC cables have five leads, RGBHV. the Composite sync signal will be on the HSYNC line of the cable. Connect this to the external sync input of your PVM and you should be good to go.

@@MachoNachoProductions Those should work for your PVM, but some other options that may work better in your setup include component cables, which you can get from misteraddons (it only has the 3 YPbPr cables, you need a separate headphone to 2x RCA cable for audio), you just need to set ypbpr to 1 in mister.ini. You can also get a SCART cable for it, but be careful because many cheap ones don't use an appropriate resistor to make sure sync levels are safe. Ultimate mister or retro access cables are very high quality and should have the proper resistor on the sync line.

Nice build idea. I might try something like this. I can definitely recommend swapping out the stock fan for a Noctua NF-A4x10 5V (3 pin). I comes with a dongle for connecting directly to the IO board so no soldering needed. It makes the whole thing much quieter.

This particular setup is still susceptible to external dust, pet hair, etc. due to the open sides. In the future, you might want to consider a box lid or other similar enclosure that covers the whole thing when not in use if you want to retain the hi-fi aesthetic, like how some record players used to do. Making one from Lexan or other clear acrylic should be a simple affair and probably has some decent tutorials on KZbin.

If you want to turn the console on and off, you might want to have a remote controlled switch. Either RF with a cute little remote, or a new IoT one that will do the same thing just with more Internet of Things. ;D And some of those RF units have more than one relay, so you could wire them up as the other three buttons on the console. Just be sure that the power relay is a "latching" one, and the other relays should be momentary.

like the build just Couple thoughts and recommendations. And alternative for the power splitter would be to make your own. With a double pole double throw switch. Or if those two boards use the same voltage. Connect them in parallel to each other and mount a single pole switch some where. I think the USB cable might require shielding. So if it's acting funny on you modify an existing type c cable could be a better option. Rounding the corners of the plexiglass to match the base would look nicer. With your skills you could probably make some real nice vga to component cables from a good quality component cable for a PS3, wii or Xbox360 cable. Guys in the og Xbox modding scene do this all the time cause hd cables are so rare for the og Xbox you could probably pull of the Same but with vga.
