The passenger side air duct needs to extend into the engine bay to supply cool air to the turbo intercooler. In this video we do just that, build a form and laminate fiberglass to create an air diverter to channel fresh air over the intercooler. While we have the tub turned upside down, for some bottom side lamination, we also finish laminating our rain diverter gutters/door seals.

You've been very innovative on your build, i plan on getting a white brand cab tractor and ripping it in half and widening it and make a sort of lowrider rat rod and so im a fabricator that doesn't have the kind of resources or equipment like you, noy even a garage or a tree on the property, so i won't have much engineering that you can do, but I've got some great advice on how to set up the steering system for this whip, thanks for the advice about that suspension book you mentioned earlier. Keep up the good conundrum that your turning into your superwhip!!

I have been an avid viewer/supporter of your wonderful and highly skilled work on this channel from the first day you started. I have some experience in composites, however, it has been mainly academic (i.e., a graduate course in laminated composites); as a result, I am missing the hands-on part. It would be extremely useful and instructive if you devote one episode to basic fiberglassing (i.e., introducing the different types of fabric you use (twill, ....), where and when a certain fabric should be used; the suggested overlap length, the proportion of resin to be used, etc.) I am sure most of your viewers would appreciate such an episode and would be indebted to you. Thanks for sharing your amazing skills with us and presenting such wonderful shows to us!

I only use mat for heavy build up and almost always with vinylester resin (Molds mostly). Epoxy and cloth gives the strength and weight advantage. Chopped strand mat is for sissy electric cars. ;)

Tip If you need threaded inserts that you can laminate in there are multiple choices depending on the required size and strength. You can make your own by choosing any of the following. Drill and tap a piece of plate , you can shape scuff and perforate it to suit, to get sufficient thread surface in a thin plate either weld on thicker pieces before drilling or drill a small hole then drive a punch through the plate to expand and fold out the hole for taping. Note don’t try this on sheet steel that is less than 1/16th of an inch. You may also try what might be called T nuts , these are press formed bits of metal that have a T profile usually with little spikes bent into the T bar that you use to stake them into wood. These are almost useless for their designed purpose as they pull out of the wood easily even when glued in. They do work well enough for laminating however especially if you add a bit of meshed or perforated steel to them by fitting the nut through the steel and folding over the spikes to lock them down. There are also fasteners that are similar to drywall anchors that screw into the wood, if you use these ones avoid any that are cast from weak metals like zinc or pot metal, the machined ones made from stainless steel or brass are best. The best way to use them may be to drill and tap a hole for them then use a high strength glue to lock them in instead or trying to laminate them in.
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 3 жыл бұрын
I'll have to try the T-nut and mesh, see how that works. For you to try- take the metal expanding drywall anchors and cut them in half and then flatten out the metal leaves (the part that normally flattens and expands). Some brands are better than others, the best are one piece with the threaded area being part of the sheet metal rather than a spot welded nut.

@@BuilderCreator . Another alternative is to use a rivnut inserted into a bit of perforated plate , but that’s too simple a solution so there’s probably a problem with it according to the law of Murphy.

Great build so far, really enjoying it. Wish I had the knowledge to do something like this but I am a machinist and designer of mechanical parts, all the flows you did for the body are more artistic and I just dont have that skill set. If you have an aluminum brackets you need machined just let me know, I own my own shop with 2 CNCs and would be happy to donate my time! Also the chair you are sitting in at the end is really cool!

Would a nut or stud be more likely to rust if it was encapsulated by fiberglass? Does fiberglass absorb moisture?

Sir won't the air coming through the air duct to the intercooler will be very turbulent due to the air diverter having really sharp angles and sudden drops in the surface, Secondly will the low-pressure region in the engine bay which we talked about earlier be enough to have a good flow and use the entire surface of the intercooler and make the full use of it and where are you thinking of mounting the air intake for the engine? by the way, do you use LinkedIn? i have actually sent you a request on it, if you want you can go through my profile as well. 😊 Thank you 👍
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 3 жыл бұрын
There will be a shroud and fan on the bottom side of the intercooler to make sure most of the flow goes through. Although we would hope the low pressure under the intercooler would be enough to draw the air down, why wait for it? Ha! The air intake is the rounded part you saw me laminate the bottom of in this video-drivers side air scoop. engine compartment ventilation- in under the doors , out through the holes in the back.

How do you keep track of all the half finished sections that dont have the full number of laminations?
@BuilderCreator

Well, these little appendages like the intercooler diverter have no "layup schedule" they just get laminated until they "feel" right. Sections of the tub/monocoque that are critical . . . well, I just keep track in my head. we will test it when it gets close to completion.

This is an absolutely fantastic project with an incredible amount of dedication, skill and research. But with all due respect, I can not for the life of me understand why you would make this front wheel drive. Launching, powering out of corners, over all handling is all compromised, especially in such a light weight vehicle. Launching will shift the cars weight to the back wheels, leaving the front wheels "light" an will consequently spin whenever trying to put the power down. What is the reasoning behind doing this MF layout?
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 3 жыл бұрын
It will be all wheel drive with a rear bias 66:33 provided by the viscous coupling in the center differential. And although all wheel drive still tends to create some under-steer, I am hoping my suspension setup will limit it more than less.
@benharris3801
@benharris3801 3 жыл бұрын
